LinkedIn’s annual report of the top job skills for the upcoming new year was released recently, and sheds some light on the industry changes facing job seekers. These skills were pulled from LinkedIn users and job description data internationally over the previous year, and based on predictions for the upcoming hiring season. In order to get a clearer picture of the job market, here at Jobscan we’ve isolated the top skills that each industry is prioritizing, and compared them to the skills possessed by job seekers. Our results provide an illuminating picture of how these skill trends are playing out when it comes to Applicant Tracking Systems. The job landscape is certainly changing, and we want to help people adapt.

Within the engineering field, 30% of job seekers are employed while they’re searching for a new position while the other 70% are unemployed. This group of engineers has, on average, been job seeking fora total of less than 3 months, which is the length of the average job search.

These job seekers are primarily using LinkedIn and Indeed to source their potential jobs and shockingly only 22% of the polled group correctly identified at least one of the top 2017 skills (above) as important to their job search. There are several paths to gaining a mastery in some of the top in-demand engineering skills, including Android, C++, MySQL, and JavaScript. A degree in computer engineering is the traditional method, and introduces students

to software, hardware, security, a n d I n t e r n e t t e c h n o l o g i e s . Companies often require advanced de g r e e s a n d s p e c i a l i z e d c e r t i f i c a t i o n s i n p a r t i c u l a r programming languages. For those seeking a light primer, various coding boot camps and online schools have sprung up of late ( Coding Dojo, for instance ), and are well suited for adding a technical knowledge to a business and marketing background.
