With more than 500 delegates and a 3-day conference program, the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo in Amsterdam, June 23-25, 2015, was a perfect opportunity for Kohler Marine to meet the electric and hybrid community. Dedicated solely to showcasing the latest next-generation electric and hybrid marine-propulsion technologies, components and solutions, the show gathered an audience of propulsion system designers, shipowners and operators, boatbuilders, engine manufacturers, naval architects and military fl eet operators.

“The conferences we attended clearly showed that the future of hybrid and electric solutions depends on the dimensions and capacities of batteries and on effi cient ship management,” explained John Van Maaren, Area Sales Manager EMEA. “The fl eet owners’ expectations are related to cost savings: having a smaller, less educated crew and reducing fuel consumption. That’s where our cost-effi cient, easy-to-monitor DEC 3500 with PGEN system matches the trend.” ■

Suresh, you took over the 33-99 kW John Deere marine program in 2012 when you transitioned from Global Plumbing to the Power Group. What are your current responsibilities?

I am doing project management for the entire marine portfolio of products: 200/175-kW John Deere marine and 15- to 40-kW diesel KDI integration, in addition to several industrial and controller developments.

What makes marine programs unique? They are always unique and challenging compared to industrial and residential

programs due to the specifi c requirements to meet global market needs, the multiple agency certifi cations required (Lloyds, ABS, BV, DNV, CCS, etc.) and the optional kits offered. They demand a lot of coordination and alignment between sales and service teams across the globe, as well as the core development team at the Mosel, Wisconsin, factory. A clear understanding of agency requirements, staying up to date on regulations compliance changes and converting these into product specifi cations are keys to successful, market-leading products and timely launches.

What is your involvement in the John Deere marine program?I manage a cross-functional team that arrives at and aligns on realistic project scopes, budgets and schedules. I document and manage project risks, anticipate and report high-level problems before they occur and help remove roadblocks to keep the program on track. I facilitate and coordinate project activities to maximize the use of best practices and ensure timely completion of each project phase.

What elements are vital to product development?Effective teamwork among third-party and regulatory compliance engineers, product development engineers (for alternators, controllers and generators) and product managers is vital for aligning, monitoring and tweaking the design. It’s also necessary to coordinate visits for witness testing concurrently with agencies across the globe. To keep the project within budget, it’s vital to get the product right the fi rst time and pass all agency requirements.

Did you face specifi c challenges or issues while managing this project?Talking about project alignment, a tough one was to focus on launching 32 nodes (33-99 kW) with parallel development of the DEC 3500 controller including all agency approvals (Lloyds, ABS, BV and DNV). The learning curve on the 175/200-kW John Deere development was much shorter as we leveraged the lessons learned from the earlier 33-99 kW, thanks to the structured KPS product development practices. Using an existing agency-approved DEC 3500 controller reduced the development schedule on the 175/200 kW to a great extent. ■

Baltic Workboats has signed a contract with Stockholm University for design and building of a 24-meter ice-class research vessel. The university was looking for a quiet generator with the best footprint, which explains why Kohler Marine won this project with 1 x 55EFOZDJ. The vessel will be used for scientifi c and environmental research, educational purposes and monitoring tasks on the Baltic Sea. Distributor involved: BMG Diesel Center. Delivery of the vessel is due by the end of April 2016. ■

ALFATEH2000 d.o.o. was founded in 2000 in Opatija along the northern Adriatic coast. Working with a famous Italian manufacturer of A/C equipment, the company has gained valuable experience in the nautical sector while expanding

activities to new products such as marine A/C equipment, water makers, pumps, blowers and propulsion.

ALFATEH2000 recently moved from ACI Marina Opatija to Rijeka, still on the northern part of the eastern Adriatic. “Our new location in a passenger terminal building is attractive because the passenger port of Rijeka has plans to turn into a megayacht marina,” confi rmed Rajko Brncic, ALFATEH2000 Managing Director. “With several yachts over 50 m on permanent berth and many yachts in transit, the port already shows good opportunities for marine business.”

KOHLER Marine dealers and distribution include Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Serbia; the company has already established a Kohler service network with 16 service points along the eastern coast of the Adriatic. Last spring, ALFATEH2000 installed 2 x 40EFOZDJ running in parallel for Betina refi t shipyard. Although the Croatian market is primarily service- or retrofi t-oriented, ALFATEH2000 has close relationships with shipyards such as Betina refi t, Avangard and Punat in Croatia and Art of Kinetik in Serbia. The new direct dealer has conducted several projects in cooperation with Kohler Marine, providing 17 x 5-kW generators to Nautical Center Prgin (NCP) Shipyard to power newly built catamarans. ■

and members of the public to study marine-related science, technology, engineering and math in the real-world laboratory of the Gulf of Mexico.

With the launch of the BaySmart Express, most of those learning opportunities take place at sea. Rob Clift, BaySmart’s Director, credits the vision of a fl oating classroom to the program’s original founder, Huey Barnett.

The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament gathered hundreds of fi shing fans in Morehead City, North Carolina, for the 57th annual event in June, with 149 boats in fi shing competitions over six days. This famous event offered the perfect opportunity to promote Kohler in the area and in the sport-fi shing business market. Kohler and Nixon Power paired up to give away a 5.2-kW portable generator to the fi rst boat that brought in a 500-pound-plus blue marlin.

Viking 62 captain Brian Komer of Rivera Beach, Florida, showed a fl are when he motored into the Big Rock weigh station with a 680-pound blue marlin to snag the early lead. While the 62-ft. Sportfi sher, a demo boat for Viking Yachts, enjoyed an enormous lead throughout the tournament, the second-place boat was an outboard with a new KOHLER 6EOKD on-board.

The Big Rock wrapped up June 12 when trophies and prize money were awarded. Kohler and Nixon Power handed over the portable generator to the Viking 62 team as hundreds of spectators looked on. ■

What better place to learn about the sea than on the sea? That’s the logic of the dedicated educators who lead the BaySmart program in Galveston, Texas. Since the program began a decade ago, the goal has been to purchase a vessel and refi t it as a fl oating classroom. The result, launched earlier this year, is the BaySmart Express, a 111-foot former crew and supply vessel that serves as a state-of-the-art center for marine and maritime education.

The BaySmart program began as an after-school program for children in the Houston area. Today, it makes its home at Sea Scout Base Galveston, a marine facility affi liated with the Boy Scouts of America. BaySmart provides a variety of opportunities for Scouts

In times of fi erce competition and tight budgets, how do we keep Kohler Marine in the minds of marine prospects? Part of the solution is the development of digital marketing communications.

“The goal of our e-newsletter strategy is to keep Kohler in the minds of our subscribers, get them to click through to the Kohler website and provide useful information once they get there,” explained Karol Hoerth, Kohler E-Communications Leader and Database Analyst. “The Kohler email platform accepts registrations to 22 different e-newsletter programs, including the marine business,” confi rmed Karol.

More than 800 shipyard and design contacts were short-listed and incorporated into the database. The fi rst communication was an e-blast touting the features and benefi ts of the new 200EOZDJ/175EFOZDJ.

Kohler Marine Sponsors Inland Marine Expo (IMX)

Kohler Marine co-opted with distributor MNI Diesel to strengthen their presence at the IMX show held in June in St. Louis, Missouri. IMX gathers attendees from barge, towing, fl eeting, harbor service and dredging companies, along with marine contractors, inland shipyards, repair facilities and government agencies. Signage on the show site coupled with local media coverage (The Waterways Journal issued an article on a new Higman boat with a KOHLER 65EOZCJ onboard) ensured KOHLER brand recognition during the event. ■

“Huey always wanted to build a ship for the program, so that’s exactly what we did,” Rob explained. “We picked out a vessel and designed it to be perfect for this program, all the way down to the state-of-the-art KOHLER® generators that are really amazing.”

The BaySmart Express can carry up to 84 students at a time, but it isn’t just a passive host for STEM classes on meteorology or underwater robotics. The ship itself was designed and refi tted to serve as an ongoing teaching aid. For example, the KOHLER Marine generators that Rob mentioned provide all of the electricity to the BaySmart Express.

The 65-watt 65EOZCJ gen sets with Decision-Maker® 3500 paralleling controllers were integrated into the overall educational experience. Jim Crider of Land & Sea Services, the company responsible for the refi t, elaborated. “This vessel is a training vessel,” said Jim. “Everything was installed in open areas where students can come on-board and actually see how things operate – the generators and engines – and get a better understanding of what it takes to run a vessel.” Added Rob, “It’s really cool how it’s not just a generator – it’s actually part of our educational program, as well.”

A smaller generator was originally chosen, according to Rob, who was closely involved in all aspects of the design and refi t. It would have been adequate for the ship’s current electrical needs, but he expects the program to grow considerably over the next few years – which means the ship’s energy demands will grow along with it. So Land & Sea and Kohler recommended the innovative new paralleling system, which intrigued Rob. “We wanted to have the latest and the greatest technology,” he said, thinking again of the learning experience. “We didn’t want to be behind the curve when it came to technology.”

According to Jim, the parallel confi guration also provides ample benefi ts to the ship and its passengers, beyond the educational ones. It saves on wear and tear, since the second generator only kicks in when the demand for power requires it. Safety is another benefi t. “Everything on the boat runs off A/C voltage,” Jim explained, “so if there’s a problem with one generator, the other generator comes on and takes over.”

2 x 65EOZCJ onboard the BaySmart Express

“Environmental responsibility is a third benefi t,” said Rob. The BaySmart Express incorporates ecologically friendly materials and methods throughout the vessel. The fact that the KOHLER gen set produces a minimum of carbon emissions made it a natural choice. What’s more, it earned BaySmart a grant from the Texas Emissions Reduction Plan.

But what really impressed Jim was Kohler’s innovative and user-friendly Decision-Maker 3500 paralleling controller. “I’m still learning how to use everything on it,” he mused. “It’s unbelievable what it can do.”

It’s safe to say the same holds true for the BaySmart Express. Only time will tell what it can do. Rob remembers its maiden voyage, a four-hour fi eld trip fi lled to capacity with students from the Galveston Independent School District. “Here are kids who live in Galveston, and a lot of them have never even been out on a boat,” Rob refl ected. “And that’s just the great thing about the BaySmart Express. Our goal is to introduce the maritime world to all of our students.” ■

Atlantis/KOHLER booth

Kohler Marine shared exhibit space with U.K. partner Atlantis Marine at the Seawork Boat Show last June. “I have to say Seawork was exceptional this year,” commented Atlantis Marine Sales Area Manager Mark Zimmerman. “We all put a lot of effort into inviting people – over the last weekend, several hundred email invites were sent. As a direct result, we were busy on all three days!” Builders, operators and owners showed interest in new and repower projects for generators from 5 kW and above, including potential paralleling systems. Conversations started with Genuine Marine and Bellcraft, among other yards. ■
