Getting The Upper Advantage No Matter The OddsBy: Anthony Hines

A Reminder Of Who Am I & Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me?

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

The next group of slides will discuss things that I believe are some of my best ideas from previous chapters that I want to re-focus on in order to help you stay on track to get your next job. This is my PowerPoint to help you to “Eliminate The Noise” to make sure that you have taken advantage of my best ideas and not lose them in the noise of unemployment.

I will tell you the tip or idea and let you know why I like it to help you in dealing with the process.

Remember, I am by no means a professional and never claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your career.

I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end unemployment one person at a time.

Take every benefit you can get from your unemployment office. Whether it is training or networking or money to allow you to attain a certification, it is on you to use it. If your counselor is not helping you, get another counselor. Don’t sit around and wait for stuff. You are responsible for you. Get on it and take control of this aspect of the process because you can.

Whatever your field is, join your local professional organization in your area and start volunteering to help that group to organize the upcoming events. It is great experience that you can discuss in your interviews and you will meet a ton of people who are working in your field and are looking for someone with a “take charge” attitude that you will show by proactively getting involved. This will really help your visibility and it will keep you focused.

Did you have a mentor or were you part of a mentoring program at your previous job? Well just because your situation has changed, does not mean that you have no experience to share. Be proud of those experiences and stay involved. Keep your mentor close to you as that person can advise you in this situation as well. This will help you to keep your mind clear.

Don’t get lost in Government unemployment statistics. Those stats are not you and really are not relevant to you because they are old news and not about the future. You are focused on the now and future and you control that. Don’t some government report that is always using different criteria affect your mindset or outlook. You are in charge of you and not the government.

Get out and meet people any way you can and let them know that you are looking. There is nothing to be ashamed of or worried about. You are looking because of a business course change in most cases and not because of anything that you did. If you are looking but still employed, do not quit your job until you have another one if at all possible because having a job while you are looking can be an advantage if you use it that way. That said, always be aware that if you quit a job, a perspective employer may say “hey if that person quit on that company, they may quit on me”. I am not trying to scare you butt I want you to know how companies think sometimes and not let you live in fantasyland. Sorry, but I am not trying to make friends, I am only trying to be brutally honest.

Take an inventory of your skills and be honest. If your skills are antiquated and out of touch then that is the way it is and look into ways to get them updated. The more new skills that you have then that makes you more marketable to any employer. Now, it may be great that you know about those legacy systems or processes at your old companies and it could help you, but knowing new stuff really opens doors. Yes, it is work but if you don’t go and learn new stuff, you options will remain limited.

Confidence is on you. If you get off your game, go read your LinkedIn profile and take a look at all you have done. I bet it is full with lots of great experience that you have probably forgot about because it is has been a while. Just because you haven’t done this recently or used this skill recently doesn’t mean you don’t have it. Remember those accomplishments to help you keep your confidence and go read my “Confidence” presentation in a preceding chapter that I created.

Negativity destroys all of what I am trying to do to help you. Think of the negative aspects of your life and eliminate them or at least minimize them because your attitude is the whole key to your success. It is not on anyone else to fix and help you and don’t let anyone fake you into thinking that they can fix you. Only you can fix you so you have stay positive. Take action on this and make your life positive as you need all the energy you can find to be successful.

Meeting people for coffee or lunch or linking to them on LinkedIn or recommending co-workers in their LinkedIn profiles is limitless. You never know where your next job offer will come from but it probably won’t come from just blindly applying to some job online. Those are like lottery scratch tickets. Yes they can come in but the chance is small.

Take advantage of the LinkedIn Job Seeker option. Yes it is a few bucks a month but it tells recruiters that you are serious about your job search. I used it to help me get my job and I recommend it highly. LinkedIn is becoming a huge job seeker help tool for professionals. Why can’t they help you? Plus, they have a free trial period. Worst case, use that and see where it takes you.
