Employer: Ever thought about getting a job first then to start looking for a girlfriend? Candidate: My career is my first priority. Currently I don’t want to consider this personal issue. Employer: Sorry, my company cannot employ you. Candidate: Why? Employer: You are lacking in public relation skills and confidence!! Employer: Any girlfriends? Candidate: Yes. Employer: Is she pretty? Candidate: yes Employer: Is she your first lover? Candidate: Yes. Employer: Sorry, we can't employ you because you lack fighting spirit.

Sounds funny………. doesn’t it?

Relax…..your interviewer is checking to see if you have a sense of humor.

A Job Interview is generally a set of questions asked by the interviewer to test the ability of a candidate, his/her knowledge and personality. It is the employer’s way of assessing prospective candidates, to find out if they are good enough for the job for which the company is recruiting. During the interview process the interviewer will ask different types of questions in order to learn more about the candidate. In most companies interview questions are divided into different types.

In the first set, the interviewer asks general questions about the candidate’s family background, education, and interests.

The second set of questions are the analytical questions meant to assess the technical knowledge and analytic skills of the candidate.

While the last lot of questions are designed so that the employer can judge the candidate’s personality – his/her nature, decision making capability, ideology, and ability to solve problems.

Non-verbal communication

Non-verbal communication is as important, or sometimes even more important than, verbal communication. The evaluation of your non-verbal communication will start as soon as you walk into the company's lobby and will continue until the interview is finished. If your non-verbal communication skills aren't up to the companies expectations, then it won't matter how well you answer the questions. Your posture, hand shake, outfit and accessories, space usage, attentiveness, eye contact, and facial expressions all matter at the time of the interview.

• Smile and nod (at appropriate times) when the interviewer is talking, but don't overdo it. Don't laugh unless the interviewer does first.

• Be polite and keep an even tone to your speech. Don't be too loud or too quiet.

• Don't slouch. • Make eye contact with the interviewer for a few seconds at a time. • Relax and lean forward a little towards the interviewer so you appear

interested and engaged. • Don't lean back, you will look too casual and relaxed. • Keep your feet on the floor and your back against the lower part of the

chair. • Pay attention, be attentive and interested. • Listen. • Don't interrupt. • Stay calm, even if you have had a bad experience at a previous position or

were fired, keep your emotions to yourself and do not show that you are angry or upset.

“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said.” --Peter F. Drucker

Do’s & Don’ts

Do

• Keep your mind focused on the interview. • Make sure you understand the question before attempting to answer it. • Speak slightly slower than the normal. • Speak clearly and fluently. • Vary the tone of your voice (high and low) to maintain interest. • Project professionalism. • Maintain eye contact.

Don’t

• Complain about the company parking or directions. • Bad-mouth your previous job, manager, or company. • Grovel - employers want to hire people who can do the jobs and who are

enthusiastic about the work. What's not appealing is having the candidates every word and gesture conveying the message, "hire me, I beg you”.

• Answering a question before you understand it. • Spacing out - any interviewer worth their salt will be able to tell when

you've zoned out. If you're wondering whether the 5:40 train will get you home in time to watch the playoff game, the interviewer will spot it in your eyes.

• Cursing - Interviewers love to put job candidates at ease. When you reach the state of ease that lets an "f-bomb" escape your lips, you've gone too far.

• It's tempting to share with a sympathetic interviewer the news that this job search has been really hard, that you're not getting callbacks, and that you've already sent out 150 resumes. Don't do it. Smart job candidates put out a vibe that says, "I'm glad to be here with you and this job might be fun, but I'm a capable person who's aware of my value in the job market”.

• Doing anything disgusting - the long list of personal gross factors includes picking one's teeth or nose, spitting, and other unmentionables that are best left to the imagination.

Leave a positive first and last impression

Questions & Answers

After all the above formalities, get set for some formal interview questions……

Here you should prepare your imagination a bit to get it flowing freely just in case you get some tricky job interview questions. The most important thing is try to keep an open mind.

“Tell me about yourself.”

You are given 2 minutes to answer this question. Remember that the interviewer has reviewed your resume so don’t waste time in repeating what is already in front of them. The interviewer is trying to gain some insight of you as a person by asking you to describe yourself personally and professionally. This also gives them an idea about how you view yourself.

You should talk briefly about your family background and how your family values have shaped you into becoming a hard working professional. You can also talk about hobbies and why you like them and what new qualities you have learned which can be directly applied to the job. i.e. patience, tidiness, organization ability, tactical etc.

“Tell us what you know about our company.”

Here the interviewer expects you to have researched thoroughly about the company, its competitors, market strategy etc. So don’t just surf their website but have some data handy in terms of revenue, size of the company, number of products, the company’s value system etc. It is important to be prepared.

“What would you do during your first 90 days on the job?”

The answer to this question shows your approach for joining a new organization and you should talk about how you will ramp up on the new job in the shortest possible time. Also, the interviewer is interested in knowing that you will be productive from day one and how you will achieve this.

“If you learned that you only had six months to live, what would you do with your remaining time?”

Hey, don’t freeze up. Think! The answer to this question shows your approach to life and what you think about yourself...

“If you won $50 million in the lottery, what would you do with the money?”

Don’t get excited. This question is designed to gauge your priorities. Whatever you do, don't say you would quit your job.

Now get ready for some Crazy & funny questions………………..

These questions are set to test a candidate’s ability to think on their feet. The funny interview questions are designed to test your patience and the level of irritation you can hold up to. If it is funny, then answer it in a funny way.

The interviewer is just checking if you have some life in you other than talking about technical things throughout the interview.

“If you had to be an animal what kind of animal would you choose to be?”

Choose an animal that is efficient at everything that it does and one that is often very busy. OR you can answer, "Oh, any crepuscular animal would do well for me -- a rabbit or a bat." Here Crepuscular means most active during dawn and dusk, so you'll get to show off your extensive vocabulary.

“What kind of fruit would you be?”

You should choose a fruit that tastes good in a fruit salad along with many other fruits.

This can be used to show that you are a team player who works well with others.

“How many hats do you own?”

The purpose of this one is to explore how flexible you would be working for the company. You could say you own many hats and can change them easily as you need to.

“If you could have any superpower, what would it be?”

Your potential employer seeks to find out what you aspire for yourself. Discuss some superpowers and then relate it back to the possible duties of your position with the company.

“Your co-worker comes by your desk and sticks their tongue out at you, what do you do?”

Some potential employers want to see how humorous you can be, especially in stressful situations. You could say, "stick my tongue out right back at her, put my thumbs on my temples, and wiggle my fingers."

This section explains all the basic concepts of electronics which are the pillars of the electronic world. The electronic world is very large, but the smallest and the most important constituent of this world is an 'electron' which is defined as a negatively charged particle that orbits around the nucleus in an atom. Protons and Neutrons are the two positively charged particles and negatively charged particles respectively, which are present inside the nucleus. Some important terms in atomic theory are: • Atomic Number: The number of protons in the nucleus • Electron shell: These are the energy bands along which electrons orbit around the

nucleus • Valence electrons: These are the electrons which are present in the outer level. • Valence number: Is the number of electrons in the outer level. The three types of materials: Conductors, Insulators and Semiconductors are explained in detail along with their atomic structures. An electronic circuit is said to be incomplete without the existence of current and voltage. Resistance and Power are also vital terms for an electronic circuit to occur. This section explains how the current flow takes place in the conductor, what the actual current flow is and discusses conventional current flow.

Direct and alternating currents are the two forms of electric currents. Both these forms are introduced within the manual and their definitions, sources, and uses are described.

“What is Eskimo ice?”

Don't understand the question? That's exactly the point, try being creative. Think of something witty to say such as, "Ice made especially by Eskimos, which is great for making igloos."

“If I came to your home and looked in your refrigerator, what would I find?”

Don't get flustered. Answer exactly what is in your fridge and act as if it's not a big deal he or she is asking you.

“Do you install toilet paper so that you pull from the top or the bottom of the roll?”

This helps employers know if you will take initiative in the position. Answer one or the other because if you say, "I don't know" it shows that you are not taking the question seriously and you may handle duties this way as well.

“If you were a tree, what type of tree would you be?”

Pick anything but a weeping willow and prepare to defend your answer.

Goofed up with crazy questions? Get ready for

Brain busters…

Technical interviews are mainly a package of brain teasing questions and riddles that are designed to test the analytical skills of a candidate. Technical interviews do not have a set of standard answers.

How many petrol bunks are there in Mumbai?

This can appear to be a very funny question but the interviewer is not expecting the right answer. Just make a logical reasoning as to how many petrol bunks would be required for a particular area and population. In that way you can give a range.

How many golf balls can fit in a school bus? The point of the question isn't to see how many golf balls you think are in the bus, but to see what your deduction skills are like. Do you just take a random guess or do you actually try to come up with a legitimate answer by going through a logical series of steps?

How to improve a pencil?

The interviewer is not interested to know what you actually would do with the pencil but is trying to find out if you can point out the problems associated with the pencil and what can be done to improve its efficiency.

You are shrunk to the height of a nickel and your mass is proportionally reduced so as to maintain your original density. You are then thrown into an empty glass blender. The blades will start moving in 60 seconds. What do you do? You simply jump out. As you are scaled down, the ratio of muscle mass to the total mass remains the same. Potential energy is given by E = mgh. So, if E/m is unchanged (where E is the energy expended in expanding your leg muscles, and m is your mass), then h is unchanged. This is the reason why grass-hoppers can jump about as high as people.

How much should you charge to wash all the windows in Perth? As crazy as it might sound, questions like these demonstrate your ability to think through a complex problem with little or no information. They expect you to take an educated guess. You can be asked questions like - how many buildings are there in your city?

You have to get from point A to point B. You are unsure whether or not you can get there. What would you do? Utilizing a “learn as you go” approach and applying collected knowledge and data along the way is the best way to proceed. Let’s break this down further. Determine the amount of time you have to get from point A to point B. Spend the initial 20% of that time making a 360° search with the largest circumference possible within the time you have allowed. During that time, ask people, look for maps, clues, collect data and knowledge. At the end of the initial 360° search take an objective look at all the information you have obtained and then calculate the risk of failure you are willing to live with. Create a plan and a strategy based on your assessment of where you believe point B to be. Then you can proceed on implementing your plan with predetermined intervals of reassessment and strategy improvements. This is the best chance you have of reaching point B if you are unsure whether or not you can get there.

Imagine you have a closet full of shirts. It’s very hard to find a shirt. So what can you do to organize your shirts to make it easier for you to retrieve them? Let’s consider a set of attributes of each shirt you are interested in: e.g. sleeve length, color, buttons.

On the left you put all the short sleeve shirts, and on the right the long sleeve shirts.

Then you separate each group into no buttons, partially buttoned, and fully buttoned. Each sub group is then separated further into colored and monochrome sub-groups.

Then each colored group is sorted left to right according to the color spectrum: ROYGBIV: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue, indigo, violet.

Each monochrome group is sorted left to right: white on the left, black on the right, and shades of grey in the middle, the darker grey on the right, the lighter on the left and so on.

If the probability of observing a car in 30 minutes on a highway is 0.95, what is the probability of observing a car in 10 minutes (assuming a constant default probability)? If the chance to see the car is 10 percent per minute, the first minute you have a 10% chance, the second minute you have 10% of 90% = 9% (so total 19%), the third minute 10% of 81% (= 8.1%, total 27.1 %) ...... Since the chance for 30 minutes is 95 percent, the chance for 1 minute is 9.5% and for 10 minutes is 63.1 %.

If you look at a clock and the time is 3:15, what is the angle between the hour and the minute hands?

The hour hand will have moved one-fourth of an hour; therefore there will be 7.5 degrees between the two hands.

How many barbers are there in Melbourne?

Obviously no one expects you to tell them the precise number of barbers in Melbourne; they want to hear you go through a line of thinking. The variables you'll want to consider are the population of Melbourne and the percentage that's male; the number of haircuts the average male has per year divided by the number of days in the year, taking into account the number of days per year barbershops are open; and the number of haircuts an average barber can give per day. By the way, there are 550 barber shops in Melbourne; 6,273 active barbers in the state; taking into account 66% of the Victoria’s population, Melbourne has roughly 4,140 barbers.

You have eight balls all of the same size. 7 of them weigh the same, and one of them weighs slightly more. How can you find the ball that is heavier by using a balance and only weighing it twice? Choose 6 balls and weigh 3 against 3. Put three balls on each side of the scale. If the arms are equal, you know the heavy ball is one of the two remaining. If the arms are unequal, take the three balls on the heavier side, pick two and weigh them against each other.

You wake up one morning and there's been a power outage. You know you have 12 black socks and 8 blue ones. How many socks do you need to pull out before you've got a match?

To get matching socks, you need to pick three -- there are only two colors, after all.

You're trying to get to Truth town. You come to a fork in the road. One road leads to Truth town (where everyone tells the truth), the other to Liar town (where everyone lies). At the fork is a man from one of those towns -- but which one? You get to ask him one question to discover the way. What's the question?

To find the way to Truth town, simply ask the man, "Which way is your hometown?" Then go whichever way he points: if he's from Liar town, he'll point to Truth town and if he's from Truth town, well, you get it.

There are many job fields where interview candidates have to face some tricky questions.

Radio Jockey

Coach

You disagree with a listener about his reviews on a good movie? How will you persuade him that he isn’t right?

Every Radio Jockey has his own style of reaching out to the masses. He is expected to have a good voice, with a warm, friendly and spontaneous nature and excellent communication skills. Radio Jockey interview questions are usually not related to broadcasting. The interview is just a test of how you present yourself.

Hey, think about it!!

Coaching involves lot of commitment and passion. It is always important for a coach to believe in himself. It is only then that he can instill confidence in players and ingrain the belief that even they can win. But apart from passion and commitment a coach needs to have other tenets to his nature. He needs to have the proper attitude. He needs to come down to the age of the players, accept new ideas and suggestions, and compromise on everything else other than the game. Besides this, a coach needs to have a vision, tenacity to cling to his vision, and proper fundamentals backed by the right kind of experience.

Hotel Management and Tourism

• How would you cope with criticism from parents or other members?

This job requires a lot of patience and a calm composed attitude. Most questions directed towards newcomers in the industry aim at unearthing these qualities.
