Hello, Air MadagascarSarah robertSon

EFFECTIVE June 18, Air Madagascar will resume flights

between Johannesburg and Antananarivo with a twice-weekly schedule using a B737-800.

Flights will depart from Johannesburg on Tuesdays and Sundays at 07h30, arriving in Antananarivo (TNR) at 11h25. Flights return on Mondays and Sundays departing from Antananarivo at 15h05 and arriving in Johannesburg at 17h25.

Flights are loaded in the GDSs and open for bookings, with fares starting at R9 307, inclusive of taxes. Fares are valid from June 18 until further notice (non-seasonal fare).

Border Air has been appointed Air Madagascar’s representative in South Africa with immediate effect.

Air Madagascar stopped flying to South Africa in 2015. Lu Dowell, ceo of Border Air, says the airline underwent a process of rationalisation at that time and reduced its network, withdrawing certain routes. However, late in 2017 Air Austral acquired 49% of Air Madagascar, putting the airline in a position to expand its network again. “SA is a key market. With new structures in place, Air Madagascar is now in a better position to support the route and market, concentrating on growth,” she says.

An SA island specialist says an additional carrier is

welcome, and he hopes the additional capacity will lead to more competitive airfares. He says Airlink has operated a monopoly on the direct route for the last few years.

The source says Madagascar is currently substantially more expensive than Mauritius and Zanzibar, from both an airfare and hotel costing perspective. He says in low season, flights to MRU and ZNZ generally range between R5 000 and R7 000 while the TNR airfares were closer to the R10 000 mark.

“Luckily Madagascar is perceived as a bucket-list destination, which continues to attract less price-sensitive clients to its shores, who are drawn to its unique wildlife and natural attractions.”

FlySafair opens bookings for 2020Deena robinSon

FLYSAFAIR has opened bookings up to May 2020. Kirby Gordon, head of sales and distribution for the airline, says: “Tour operators like to have the ability to book in advance. They want to have confirmed prices so they can market their packages accordingly.”

A recent TNW poll found that 84% of agents had been asked to book a flight more than a year in advance.

Why are flights not available more than a year ahead? “A lot has to do with planning slots from the airport, which is a difficult negotiation,” says Kirby. “There are times in the year when it’s difficult to get your planned slot but if you’ve previously had one, you get historical first rights and as you become a more established airline, you can start cashing in on these ‘historicals’ to get the slots you want.”

A spokesperson for Travelport said there was demand from agents to make flights bookable on the GDS more than 11 months in advance because tour operators, hotels and cruise operators were now releasing the availability for their programmes at least 12 months in advance. Operators and agents need the air content to match these programmes and therefore want access to fares and availability in advance. “This is particularly important in specialist segments, for example weddings and honeymoons,” the spokesperson says.

Specialist demandKirby agrees that specialist segments are important, saying demand for forward booking is high among those planning conferences and also for commuters, who will book ahead for the whole year once the airline

schedules are published.However, Jannine Adams,

senior marketing manager of Amadeus Southern Africa, says there is no major demand Amadeus is aware of. “For advance booking requirements, agents and travellers have to adhere to fare rules and ticket validity,” she says. “Certain fares allow for one free date change, which is especially useful for tickets requiring advance booking.”

When asked why this forward booking capability was not widely offered, the Travelport spokesperson said agents were able to book flights more than 11 months in advance with particular airlines. “This is dependent on the airline and its host system being able to support and provide inventory and availability that far in advance.” Kirby says the benefits of this scheme are simple: the earlier you book, the better the fares.

Europamundo Vacations is offering tailor-made European tours, where guests can start at any point of the trip, select the most convenient dates and begin at the most suitable airport. Private transfers to join the tour group are included. Travellers can also add nights at the beginning or end of the trip. Influencer strategies backfireSarah robertSon

INSTAGRAM tourism, and the use of influencers as a travel marketing strategy

can, at best, produce very limited results and, at worst, backfire.

George Argyropoulos, ceo of Cruises International, says the company experimented with a number of influencers last year but found that the vast majority did not produce much return on investment in the South African market.

“Their focus often seemed to be more about promoting themselves than the brand that was sponsoring them. While many posted while on board, we saw little post-cruise follow through. I am, as a result, of the opinion that the term ‘influencer’ is often abused by individuals looking for free experiences. We did identify

a couple of individuals that we are very happy to continue our relationship with though,” said George.

Even more seriously, Instagram tourism has led to clampdowns in Thailand and the US.

Mai Khao beach near Phuket International Airport, has grown in popularity after becoming an ‘Insta’ destination. Visitors have been flocking to the beach – where aircraft can be seen flying low overhead – in order to take selfies of themselves with the landing aircraft. Phuket International Airport is clamping down on the practice, saying that the photographers are distracting pilots.

Phuket airport chief, Wichit Kaeothaithiam told media that a new safety zone near the runway was being developed and would soon take effect. He said violators would be subject to punishments under the Air Navigation Act. The maximum penalty would be the death sentence.

But Phuket locals feel that the move will impact tourism in the area: “If the beach is closed, we will have serious problems because many tourists simply will not come,” Winai Sae-io, head of a local

entrepreneurial stimulus programme told The Phuket News.

Concurrently in the US, the National Parks Service (NPS) is clamping down on unlawful environmental violations fuelled by irresponsible influencers and Insta tourism.

Kathy Kupers, a spokesperson for the NPS told The Guardian: “Illegal activities posted by individuals on social media platforms have led to investigations and prosecutions by law enforcement.”

Photographer Elisabeth Brentano founded a petition last year that has collected over 19 000 signatures. It calls for Instagram and

Facebook to implement a system allowing users to report violations that are both illegal and harmful to the environment. The petition states:

“When individuals use Instagram to publicly post photos and videos of themselves breaking the law and engaging in activities that are harmful to the environment, there is seldom any legal recourse. Worse yet, when shared by larger accounts, publishers or brands, this content has the potential to reach millions of people. Without any sort of regulation, it is impossible to stop the spread of media that might encourage other Instagram users to engage in similar

illegal and damaging behaviour.”

An anonymous Intagrammer has started an account called Public Lands Hate You in which the account holder shames influencers depicting irresponsible behaviour such as flower-picking, starting fires or photoshopping images of themselves into dangerous situations in iconic sites.

This was in response to events such as one in California when a super bloom of spring flowers resulted in an influencer-led explosion of selfie-taking tourists trampling the plants in an effort to photograph themselves frolicking in the fields of wildflowers.

In April, Cunard’s Queen Victoria spent two days docked at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town before departing for Walvis Bay en route to Southampton. The ship is in the final stages of a 112-day world voyage. Another Cunard vessel, the Queen Elizabeth, will visit South Africa in November. It will dock in Port Elizabeth before setting sail for Australia. The Queen Mary 2 is expected in Cape Town in April next year while en route to Southampton. Pictured here (from left) on board the Queen Victoria are Beverley Schäfer, Minister of Economic Opportunities in the Western Cape; and Deidre Adcock and Caylee Cornish of White Star Cruises and Travel, the official GSA of Cunard in South Africa. market.”

Hyatt welcomes new brand to loyalty schemeTHOMPSON Hotels, a former Two Roads Hospitality brand, has joined the World of Hyatt loyalty programme. Hyatt acquired Two Roads, a hotel management company, in November last year. The expansion allows World of Hyatt members more options to earn and redeem points and enjoy in-hotel benefits with the eight participating Thompson Hotels. They are Gild Hall and The Beekman in New York City; Thompson Chicago; Thompson Nashville; Thompson Seattle; Thompson Toronto; and the new Thompson, The Cape in Cabo San Lucas, and Zihuatanejo on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Several other brands that previously operated under Two Roads are expected to join the loyalty scheme over the coming months.

Thailand tackles overtourismJason Clarke

THE Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is focusing on sustainability,

following the decision to close popular Maya Beach on Ko Phi Phi Leh after concerns were raised about the environmental effect of overtourism.

“We are striving to reduce tourist congestion in the main hubs by promoting emerging provincial destinations, upgrading the standards of safety and security, and instilling a higher level of environmental consciousness across the entire industry,” Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of TAT, told TNW at a recent event.

TAT has embarked on a series of campaigns to further enhance sustainable tourism, including banning styrofoam containers and plastic bags in national parks, and banning smoking

on beaches. In 2018, TAT moved its

focus on to 55 secondary destinations through a number of new marketing initiatives: Local Experience provides

visitors with an in-depth, community-based tourism experience around the lifestyle, wisdom, local identity and distinction of each area. Future Challenge focuses

on ‘Secondary Cities’, expanding their economies and boosting the income of the local people. Connecting Destinations

looks at connectivity between large and smaller cities and to neighbouring countries, to facilitate easier movement for tourists.TAT has also added a new

communication campaign called Open to the New Shades, focusing on Thailand’s diversity.

Disney introduces after-hours packageDeena robinson

WALT Disney World has added extra Disney After Hours dates at the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

Disney After Hours specifically priced tickets are separate from daytime park admission, allowing guests to visit the park for three hours after regular park hours. The ticket also allows guests early entry into the park on event nights, beginning at 19h00. Included with admission are ice cream, popcorn and selected beverages.

The new dates for each park at Walt Disney World Resort are as follows:

Magic Kingdom: May 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Disney’s Animal Kingdom:

May 7, 14 and 21; and June 4, 11 and 18. Disney’s Hollywood

Studios: May 1, 4, 10, 17, 24 and 31; and June 14, 21 and 28.Marelize Le Roux, gm of

Travel Vision, says Disney After Hours is a great way to spend more time at some of Disney’s parks, with reduced waiting times for attractions and not having to navigate big crowds.

This package differs from Disney’s Extra Magic Hours, a perk offered to guests of Disney hotels (and selected other hotels) at Walt Disney World. Extra Magic Hours

are scheduled throughout the week for different theme parks on different days and Disney resort guests can enter a selected park one hour earlier or stay in a selected theme park two hours later than the official park operating hours.

Disney After Hours tickets cost US$125 (R1 771) plus tax for advance purchase and US$129 (R1 828) plus tax for day-of purchases. Disney Vacation Club members and Annual Passholders receive a discounted price of US$95 (R1 341). The times, locations and designated attractions are subject to change without notice.

Agents benefit from repeat cruise bookingssarah robertson

IN AN age when airlines, hotels and other industry suppliers are strategising

for ways to grow direct sales, the cruise industry is instead implementing pro-agent strategies and pricing initiatives that lock agents into their distribution channels.

George Argyropoulos, ceo of Cruises International, told TNW that every cruise brand Cruises International represents employs a future cruising consultant on board the ship. Clients are offered discounts and other value-adds, should

they secure their next cruise bookings while on board. George explains that once the booking is made, the cruise lines automatically channel it back to the agent who made the original booking, then secure a new booking for the agent, which is fully commissionable to them.

Jane Davidson, director of Development Promotions, says most cruise lines pass repeat bookings and commission on to the agent who booked the initial cruise.

Janine Pretorius, owner of Encore Cruises, says in addition to referring

on-board bookings back to agents, Regent has introduced a Pre-Cruise Privilege Programme. This enables agents to extend the Onboard Savings Programme to clients as early as 30 days before they embark on their cruise.

“Clients can now book their future cruise through a travel agent before leaving home. The programme enables them to take advantage of extraordinary benefits including their best price guarantee, exclusive savings per suite and a bonus shipboard credit to enhance their upcoming voyage,” says Janine.

Rail link planned from Orlando Airport to Walt Disney WorldDeena robinson

Virgin Trains USA has expressed its intention to connect its planned Orlando Airport rail station with Walt Disney World. The company has received approval to fund the US$950m (R13bn) 274km second phase from West Palm Beach to Orlando, after completion of the first phase, which will connect Miami to West Palm

Beach via Fort Lauderdale. From there, Virgin hopes to extend it 32km from the airport to Walt Disney World.

The West Palm Beach-Orlando rail line could be up and running by 2022. The ride from Miami to Disney World should take about three hours with speeds topping 177-201 km/h in some places.

Celeste Muir, marketing manager of Thompsons

Holidays, says the rail link could benefit clients planning packaged tours of the region. “For SA clients landing in Tampa or wanting to combine Miami and Walt Disney World, the links could be a very popular choice.” However, as Thompsons’ Disney packages include an airport transfer, Celeste believes clients will continue to use this service.

Saudi Arabia opens borders with Red Sea Project Deena robinson

THE Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is planning to open its borders to non-Muslim leisure travellers as construction begins on phase one of its project to turn some of the islands along the Red Sea into an eco-friendly luxury haven.

Development of the Red Sea Project officially began last month. Plans call for a mix of luxury and premium beach and mountain resorts, wellness centres, homes and marinas capable of hosting up to a million visitors a year.

Saudi Arabia is currently

planning to offer e-visas, which will enable tourists from eligible countries to gain entry within 24 hours.

Visas have, until now, been reserved mostly for foreigners working or visiting family in the country and for Muslims making pilgrimages to Mecca and Medina, however exceptions have been made for special events such as Formula E motor racing.

The Red Sea Project will allow visas on arrival (VOAs) for visitors to the country.

An official source says that South Africans will be offered this service.

Conference Venues

TNW provides a round-up of some of the latest trends in conferencing and profiles the latest event technologies. Kim Cochrane reports.

Cvent sees 50% growth in Africa

INTEREST in event technology has certainly increased in Africa, confirms

Gokul Bajaj, Cvent senior manager of sales based in Dubai.

“In 2019, we expect to see almost a 50% growth in business volume!”

Cvent has nearly 100 customers in the region, he says. “To support this event tech growth, we are hosting more local events to be closer to our customers. We are big believers in the power

of face-to-face interaction and are looking forward to expanding our customer base with these events in the year ahead.”

Cvent technology can handle the entire event lifecycle, from finding venues, setting up a budget, marketing events, hosting online registration, facilitating check-in, engaging attendees onsite and offering post-event analytics.

Gokul says it’s incredibly exciting to be at the forefront of this move toward using

technology to help event organisers maximise the impact of their live events.

Cvent works with small organisations that put on one to two meetings a year all the way up to enterprise-level customers who may host hundreds of events each year. Pricing is customised with no set requirements, he says.

“Our comprehensive platform and mix of individual point solutions makes it easy for anyone to pick and choose the tools they need most.

Venue Secure evolves rapidly into digital event centreVENUE Secure, a brand-new, locally developed app that provides an easy-to-use, digital event centre, has completed its first client roll-out with Guvon Hotel’s Glenburn Lodge and Spa this month.

“What started off as a smattering of an idea over a glass of wine with a friend about poor security at venues has grown into a digital event centre that has far more strategic implications, says Venue Secure spokesperson, Carl Townsend.

“Once we realised we were helping firms with super-simple but effective security, with attendees confirming attendance by clicking a link on an SMS and giving their details to get a pin code, we realised we’d built a brilliant RSVP system.”

The system also sends

venue directions and tracks attendee accommodation, dietary needs as well as arrivals on the day.

“The organisers can see in real time who has responded and who is coming via an event dashboard, while keeping up to date with

upcoming events.”The next big realisation

about the system’s ability, says Carl, has been that communicating with a guest means that an event organiser can market accommodation offers as part of the RSVP process (i.e. attend this event and get 10% off accommodation).

“This gives them a great up-sell opportunity. It also provides event organisers with the data and contact details of every guest for future marketing campaigns and internal research.”

Venue Secure is also able to provide customised branding for corporate, venue or conference organiser clients. The company is currently in advanced discussions with various corporates, including multiple pharmaceutical companies, says Carl.

Switch on with Saaci THE Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (Saaci) is hosting this year’s annual congress from July 28-30 at the Southern Sun Elangeni in Durban, confirms Saaci ceo, Rudi van der Vyver.

“We’re very excited about our programme – themed ‘Switched On’ – and believe the speakers and content will be the major drawcard.”

One highlight will be a keynote address about creating world-class experiences for delegates. “The international speaker represents the leading company for experience creation across very different venues as well as customer/delegate interaction points.”

Rudi believes discussions around the education and development of industry youth will also be a hot topic.

“This is a crucial

element to ensure not only sustainability, but also to create a platform for our youth to express their creativity and fresh ideas to keep our industry on the edge of innovation and inclusiveness.”

Another talking point will be the Fourth Industrial Revolution, he says, looking at how machines are interacting in a functional way with humans at a delegate face point and also internally in organisations.

Rudi says by far the most concerning trend in the sector at present is the emergence of ‘fake’ training and conferences.

“As one of the fastest-growing industries, we are attracting the attention of scamsters.”

He encourages the industry collectively to drive professionalism and alert industry bodies when coming across practices such as these that harm the industry.

CONFERENCE VENUES

Top trends shaping 2019FROM kimchi and chatbots to delegate wellness and themed events, 2019 is set to be an exciting year for the conferencing industry, believes Mark Cooper, ceo of IACC, a global venue-based association that certifies meetings- and conference-focused venues.

“Creating memorable experiences and promoting attendee interaction is at the top of planners’ wish lists,” he says.

“Due to advancing event technology, real-time data and wearable technology will soon become the norm. Delegates have high expectations and it’s

up to meeting planners and venues to provide innovative experiences to wow guests and streamline events.”

The creation of immersive, world-class experiences for delegates will be a key topic at this year’s annual congress for the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (Saaci), says Rudi van der Vyver.

“It’s always a challenge for us in terms of how best to impress people who are experts in the field. We take the approach of content being the key ingredient. Then we aim for immersive experiences, whether in the learning

engagements, networking sessions or social functions. Experience creation is a must for our audience.”

The days of multi-day, multi-event international conferences are, however, on the decline for South African companies, believes Marc Wachsberger, md of The Capital Hotels and Apartments.

“Tighter budgets and an increased expectation of value for money and return on investment have seen more SA companies looking for conference venues that offer everything they need in one venue at a reasonable price.”

Latest technologyGuests now expect the latest technology at conferences, says Mark. He mentions, as an example, EventBots, a chatbot system programmed to provide answers to human questions in a conversational manner over SMS.

“The goal here is for chatbots to answer attendees’ key questions about event logistics.”

Venues are expected to provide superior WiFi as standard, even in remote or unusual locations, he adds. “Gone are the days when a patchy connection didn’t equal uproar.”

Check-in with Facial Recognition (FR) may also be the next big thing, he suggests. Wearable technology such as Smart watches, wristbands and badges will continue to evolve and aid interaction.

Another 2019 trend will be advances in data integration and analytics from event technology providers to create personal profiles of attendees, Mark adds.

On the local front, the new Venue Secure system is doing just that, making inroads with regard to venue security, event RSVPs and data while rapidly evolving into a digital event centre, according to spokesperson,

Carl Townsend.“Venue Secure is easy

to use, with no annoying apps to install. In fact no installation is needed, as it works from a site on any smart phone and primary communication is by SMS. It’s essentially about data – knowing what happened at events and who came – and providing a seamless RSVP experience through it.”

Michelle Bullmore, Travel Counsellors marketing manager and recruitment – SA, is currently involved in arrangements for the annual conference in Durban from May 3 to 5.

As a registration tool, she recommends Cvent. “Everything is so much easier. I’ve also heard that Slido makes events more interactive.”

She recently saw a new application for the headsets used mostly for silent discos, a format enabling multiple speakers to speak simultaneously while delegates choose who they listen to.

“The headsets can also be used for workshops where each person in the room tunes in to a different channel.”

Mark says more venues will increasingly use integrated AV systems that are affordable, efficient and superior to portable versions.

The space caters for a maximum capacity of 500 delegates. Conference packages range from R530pp for a half-day package (excluding lunch) to R650pp for a full-day package (non residential). Capital conferences

Memorable experiencesThe importance of creating memories through experiences and inspiring delegates is gaining more traction, says Mark. In 2019, themed events won’t just rely on eye-catching physical design elements, he says.

“Themes are being implemented from initial registration right through to the feedback stage, incorporating all the senses. Lighting, music and food all play a part in creating a memorable experience.”

According to Marc, most conferences still have a fun or team-building element. “Venues offering a blank canvas that welcomes any kind of creative activity are the ones that will enjoy more bookings.”

Popular events, he says, include chocolate making, MasterChef-type culinary competitions or even painting, but there should be no venue-imposed limit on what organisers can do to inspire creativity among attendees.

Beach & Bush Teambuilding, for example, includes an Indiana Jones series, Amazing Race or Pirates of The East Coast adventures that see teams racing to complete tasks.

A Movie Making challenge involves writing a script, producing, directing and acting in a ‘movie’ using limited resources.

Michelle says it’s also good to give back through charity and community service team-building initiatives.

No more ‘same old’In the current environment there is not enough out-of-the-box thinking in the conferencing sector, says Rudi.

“We remain constrained by clients’ pictures of what they think they want. This is where professionalism plays a large role. We must guide clients to create memorable, immersive and engaging event experiences, which all translate into a higher return on investment against their initial objectives.”

Industry professionals, he says, must push more of the traditional boundaries. “Clever and creative ideas don’t always mean more money, but the same old events are just

not cutting it any more.”Choosing a cruise as your

next conference venue offers attendees a far more exciting and novel experience than they would have on land, while giving organisers convenience and value for money, believes Ross Volk, md of MSC Cruises SA.

According to Mark, IACC’s Meeting Room of the Future 2018 report found that 77% of venues now offer creative meetings spaces to assist with experience creation.

He says the bar will be raised higher this year when it comes to meeting room layouts. Classroom-style seating is now medieval.

Attention is now paid to the style and décor of spaces, with multi-functional furniture and lush greenery examples of this. Flexible seating suitable for indoor and outdoor use will become standard, while demand for informal lounge-style seating will increase.

Venues offering spaces that can be dressed up or down and easily reformatted to accommodate the agenda will be the most popular, says Marc. “Being willing to transform a daytime pool area into a night-time ballroom under a Bedouin tent, for example, will win an event organiser’s heart and business.”

The bleisure concept continues on its meteoric rise, says Mark.

“This year will see planners arranging more events in exciting and unusual locations (even in far-flung destinations) to entice their most valuable attendees and loyal customers.”

Ross says cruise conferencing offers a wide variety of activities that can be ideal team-building exercises or great options for down time. Activities include sports, video games, theatre shows, spa treatments and on-shore excursions.

Wellness and natureMark says 2019 will see increased demand for organic, seasonal or locally sourced menus. Special dietary requests are the new norm. He adds that it is not uncommon to see yoga, tai-chi or mindfulness sessions as optional activities on agendas.

The Capital Hotels and Apartments conferencing team agrees that companies are seeking maximum output

from delegates. A small bowl of chewy mints and a bottle of water to last between breakfast and lunch aren’t going to keep energy levels high, says Marc.

Michelle says it’s important to consider all types of guests’ requirements, whether they are diet-related, special needs or religious. “Don’t risk things. Keep it safe and make everyone feel special.”

This year will also see an increased demand for outdoor meeting spaces and breakout

areas, says Mark. “Meeting spaces

incorporating greenery and natural light to mimic nature will become commonplace.”

Michelle recommends making the most of the environment or surroundings. “We held a conference at Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge. In the afternoon, delegates went on a game drive. When it was time for dinner, we shone a big spotlight directly in the sky so guests could find their way to a surprise boma dinner.”

Set onsite at the David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa in Zambia, the Victoria Falls Conference Centre offers 250 sqm of air-conditioned event space overlooking a waterhole. It offers a boardroom (up to 12 delegates,) a 140 sqm outdoor patio area under a Bedouin tent and a reception area. WiFi is available. MSC Orchestra heads for Southern African waters FOR organisers who want to opt for a local cruise, MSC Orchestra will make her maiden voyage to Africa and will cruise in Southern African waters from November 2019 to April 2020, says Ross Volk, of MSC Cruises SA.

“It is one of the largest and most luxurious cruise ships to do a seasonal tour in this corner of the globe,” he says. “MSC Cruises has taken note of the growing popularity of cruising in SA and continues to bring even more superior cruising experiences to our market.”

Ross adds that MSC Cruises offers special group rates for conferences as well as one free cruise fare for every 23 delegates

booked. This is limited to a maximum of ten free cruise fares per booking.

Cruising offers value for money, he adds, as group packages include accommodation, all meals, entertainment and conference facilities.

Tedious travel time is limited once attendees are on board, he says. “They can wake up every morning with a different view without having to leave the ship. With a destination cruise, they experience a taste of what another country has to offer without travelling for ages on a tour bus or getting on an aircraft. This also limits transportation hassles for conference organisers.”

Sarah Robertson reports back on her recent trip to Egypt. She also turns the spotlight on up-and-coming Jordan and pilgrimages to Israel.

Israel – the ultimate pilgrimage

DEMAND for Israel among church groups in SA has increased so

much that tour operators are recommending agents book a year in advance to secure the group’s first choice in accommodation.

According to David Bradshaw of tour operator Travel Vision, while conflict in Israel is ongoing, it is mostly confined to the Gaza Strip and rarely affects tourist venues or tourism numbers.

One of the misconceptions about travelling to Israel is that an Israeli stamp in your passport will complicate future travel arrangements to Muslim countries. To avoid this problem many passengers apply for second passports in order to separate the stamps. David debunks this myth, saying that on arrival in Israel customs officials will give you the option of placing the entry stamp directly in your passport or on a separate piece of paper.

Allow check-in timeDavid recommends spending at least a week in Israel and says most of his church groups choose to fly out on a Monday and return on a Wednesday. This way their minister does not miss too many church services.

David prefers to book direct flights on El Al as their group payment options are generous but he says that Egypt Air, Ethiopian Airlines and Turkish Airlines offer great fares into Israel too. For passengers travelling on El Al, David recommends checking in at Ortia three to four hours before departure as the airline’s policy of interviewing every passenger before wrapping their suitcases takes longer than the usual check-in.

“The must-sees in Israel include Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth of course but clients always mention enjoying the boat trip on the Sea of Galilee and the Jerusalem Sound and Light Show. The private communion service in the Garden of Gethsemane and at the Garden Tomb are very special

experiences for Christian travellers.”

While most itineraries include a baptism in the River Jordan it is important to note that some sites are more commercial than others. “Ask your operator to arrange the baptism in a quiet location away from the crowds and gift shops,” recommends David.

He also suggests spending more than one night in Tel Aviv which he describes as a wonderful, world-class, cosmopolitan city.

“There are great hotels, excellent shopping options, a vibrant night life and great beaches. Also, the city is easy to travel around by bus or bicycle. The nearby arty quarter of Jaffa with its narrow streets and pleasant restaurants is also worth visiting,” he adds.

El Al Israel Airlines has introduced two interesting new product tweaks. Priority Seating. The new priority boarding service which may be purchased from US$6 (R84) per passenger

per flight direction. This service allows passengers to board early and reach their seats quickly and assures passengers of a place to store hand luggage close to their seats. Gold, Platinum and Top Platinum Matmid members, as well as passengers holding FLEX tickets, are entitled to the service at no cost. Executive Seating. El Al passengers holding economy-class tickets can now purchase seating in the

business class cabin with economy class service. The above mentioned charge of US$300 (R4 188) per person per flight for the executive seat can be purchased at the airport only. Note that the baggage allowance for passengers seated in the ‘executive seats’ is in accordance with the ticket. This service is subject to availability.

Did you know?

Spotlight on JordanDAVID Bradshaw of Travel Vision describes Jordan as a really underestimated destination.

He says the archaeological site, Petra, is incredible to see but very hot to visit in summer and he recommends that elderly or unfit clients take a horse-drawn carriage when exploring the site. He also describes the quiet experience of watching the sun set over silhouettes of beautiful rock formations in the Wadi Rum Desert as something really special. Here clients can opt to spend a night in a local Bedouin camp, enjoying dinner and dancing in the evenings.

According to David, other sites worth a visit are Jerash, one of the best

preserved Roman sites in the world, just 45km outside Amman, and Mount Nebo, where Moses first looked down at the Promised Land.

David was also impressed by the lush and luxurious

hotels on the Jordanian side of the Dead Sea. He says while the Israeli side is characterised by hundreds of coach clients being bused in for a couple of hours, the Jordanian side has a less frenetic feel, as clients tend to visit the resorts for a few nights. The port city of Aqaba does not have great beaches, but is known more for the scuba diving sites south of the city and sailing options. David says the submarine tour on offer there is very enjoyable.

Thompsons Holidays is promoting a nine-night Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix and Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens Package from R38 814. MIDDLE EAST

Egyptmania returnsSouth African operators report a resurgence in popularity for this fascinating and well-priced destination, which fell from grace in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. TNW’s Sarah Robertson visited recently and reports on the highlights of her cruise along the Nile.MOST classic Nile cruise itineraries run from Luxor to Aswan over four nights. Catching a short, early-morning flight from Cairo to Luxor leaves enough time to explore the Luxor and Karnak temples on day one before setting off on the cruise. The 80-hectare Karnak complex –

the largest religious building ever constructed – dwarfs visitors with its enormous courtyards and 15-metre-wide pillars that tower 23 metres overhead.

The cruise accommodation is four- or five-star and fairly upmarket, although somewhat gaudy. Travelling

along the river is extremely smooth and you can watch the palm-fringed shores float past from a rooftop deckchair or plunge pool.

All meals on board are included and the buffet generally featured a large number of interesting Egyptian dishes, bowls of

plum-sized olives, pasta, a river-fish dish and a large selection of brightly coloured but inedible puddings. This

was a relief, as I would have put on even more weight had I also been devouring the dessert buffet!

Tourism growth in EgyptEgypt became the second-fastest growing country for tourism in Africa, growing by 16,5% in 2018, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council.

The growth has been linked to the improved security infrastructure, which has helped to attract international visitors back to Egypt’s shores. Although

the sector has not yet fully recovered to pre-crisis levels, the size of the Egyptian travel economy in 2018 is the healthiest is has been since 2010.

On day two we boarded a small bus that took us through the rural plots with flat-roofed homes and the scattered livestock that criss-cross the lush Nile Valley. Quite suddenly the landscape changed from bright green to stark, rocky desert as we left the flood plains and drove into the mountains where hundreds of Pharaohs are suspected to have been laid to rest

in the famous Valley of the Kings.

So far, the hidden entrances to over 60 tombs have been discovered, including those of Tutankhamun and Ramses III and IV. I found the Indiana-Jones-like experience of scrambling into small openings in the rocks, to discover intricately carved and painted corridors, tunnelling

deep into the mountainside toward the impressive tomb chambers, absolutely thrilling. Our ticket allowed us entrance to three tombs but I would like to have visited dozens if we had had the time. My tip would be to skip Tutankhamun‘s tomb as it has been completely emptied, with most of the contents on display in Cairo’s Museum of Egyptian Antiquities.

The city of Aswan, built on a cataract of the Nile, was of great strategic importance as the southern frontier of Ancient Egypt and the empire’s gateway into Nubia (Africa). Today the city has a warm, welcoming and laid-back air, with water taxis and traditional felucca yachts nipping back and forth, ferrying tourists from one bank to the other. The markets are more relaxed than those in frenetic Cairo and it is recommended to leave souvenir shopping until you reach this final port. A number of interesting day trips

can be organised from Aswan such as a trip to the island of Aglika where the Temple of Philae is located, a camel trip to the Christian Monastery of St Simeon or a visit to a nearby Nubian village. Although pricey, a sundowner at The Old Cataract Hotel on the banks of the Nile, is a memorable experience. This is where Agatha Christie famously wrote Death on the Nile. The views from the hotel’s terrace extend across the Egyptian ruins, along the shimmering Nile and out to the golden dunes of the desert.

Valley of the Kings

Temple of HepshetsuLater that day we visited the Temple of Hepshetsu. This imposing three-storey terraced temple, built on a ridge, can be seen from miles away. The approach is along an avenue previously lined with sphinxes leading from the Nile to the entrance of temple. The ruins of a few of these sphinxes may still be seen. Disregarding

protocol, which did not permit females to rule, Hepshetsu seized power through the rights of her children and by imprisoning challengers to the throne. Egypt thrived under her leadership. She was one of the most prolific builders in ancient Egypt and also oversaw the preparations for an expedition to Punt (now

Somalia), which famously returned with 31 myrrh trees, the first recorded attempt to transplant foreign trees. It is also speculated that the plucky lady intended to dig through the hillside from her temple to reach the Valley of the Kings, where, as a woman, she was forbidden from being interred.

Abu SimbelA visit to Abu Simbel is an optional activity that should not be missed, despite the 04h00 wake-up call and three- to four-hour drive to reach the site. The two spectacular temples serve

as a lasting monument to Ramses II and his Queen Nefertari. The main temple entrance is flanked by four great, seated statues of Ramses II which stare east toward the rising sun.

Abu Simbel was originally located on the banks of the Nile but the entire structure was relocated in the 1960s to avoid flooding when the Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser were constructed.

Aswan

A sundowner at The Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan is not to be missed.

Is Level 2 BBBEE enough to secure Govt and large corporate travel accounts?

To BBBEE or not to BBBEE, that is the question

Iata to allow cards but airlines still the gatekeepersSarah robertSon

IATA has confirmed that roll-out of its NewGen ISS and Transparency in Payments

(TIP) programmes will take place in South Africa in August.

The association says new functionalities are being incorporated in parallel with TIP’s roll-out, including the possibility for agents to enrol their own agency cards. This, says Marco Cristofoli, ceo of BCD Travel, would be great news for the industry. He says the functionality would be particularly useful for SME agents as a cash-flow management tool.

Airlines blocking the use of travel agent cards has been an ongoing bugbear in the industry. Iata amended its resolutions to allow the use of agent cards, but only if an airline had given the agent approval. Airlines then released individual statements advising that they would not accept agent card payments.

According to the latest Passenger Agency Programme Global Joint Council (PAPGJC) meeting agenda notes, TIP was updated in November 2018 to specifically allow Iata-accredited agents to enrol their own cards and be notified about individual airline consents. However, Iata was unable to confirm whether any airlines had given their consent for the use of any agency cards.

Functionality of TIPIata’s TIP project focuses on providing airlines with increased transparency and control. It is also intended to enable travel agents to take advantage of new forms of payment.

According to an Iata spokesperson, if an airline consents to agent card payments, the airline will bear the merchant fee. He also told TNW, however, that as part of airlines’ consent policies, they may choose to apply a cost-recovery fee to the agent for the use of a

particular agent own card or product.

According to the PAPGJC agenda notes, the below functionalities will be available for all countries that go live with TIP: Providers of Alternative

Transfer Method (ATM) products are able to enlist with Iata and enrol their products. ATMs are payment products specifically designed for travel agents and can be physical or virtual cards or account numbers. Participating airlines are

able to define in BSPlink their consent policy to the ATMs enrolled with Iata. Iata-accredited agents are

able to consult the list of enrolled ATM airline-approved products. Iata-accredited agents can

set up an email alert to be informed of any changes to consent set-up from an airline on ATM products.TNW understands that

more than 100 agent cards have been registered across 18 BSP regions.

Air Mauritius ups flights to DurbsSarah robertSon

EFFECTIVE July 1, Air Mauritius will increase its frequencies to Durban from three to four flights a week.

Currently MK flies between Durban and Mauritius on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays operated by an A319-100.

The fourth frequency will be added on Sundays. Flights will depart Durban at 12h20 and arrive in Mauritius at 18h10. Return flights depart from Mauritius on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, departing Mauritius at 09h00 and arriving in Durban at 11h20.

“The Durban market to Mauritius has grown significantly, but in particular to our beyond international destinations,” says regional manager Southern Africa and Latin America, Carla da Silva.

Melissa Phillips, owner of Sure Map Travel, says there has been a recent increase in international carriers flying out of Durban.

Melissa says, as Air Mauritius offers the only direct flights out of Durban it is the airline of choice for Durban clients.

“While the flying time for the direct Durban-Mauritius flight is similar to the Johannesburg Mauritius flying time (both about four

hours), connecting via Johannesburg will almost double a Durban client’s journey as it will include the Durban-Johannesburg flight plus the connecting time in Johannesburg,” Melissa says.

She says the return Air Mauritius flight (departure 09h00) does depart a little early for some clients, as it requires them to check out of their hotel, transfer to the airport and check in before 09h00.

She says, as a result, she sometimes books clients on the SAA-operated MK codeshare flight which flies back from Mauritius to Johannesburg in the afternoon.
