The year 2015 was outstanding for the John Knox Village Foundation. And, moving forward, 2016 will be an even more exciting time due to the incredible and tireless fundraising efforts put forth by residents

and friends of residents.

Because of your generous support, The Foundation was successful in raising $5 million for The Woodlands at John Knox Village and its grand opening is set for May 26, 2016.

The Foundation wishes to thank each resident and friend who contributed. We are also humbled by contributions from the many vendors who supported The Woodlands.

Similarly, we graciously applaud each resident and friend who selflessly provided almost another million dollars to our other funds. This means our ducks, swans and geese will have grain to eat, the Village will have the resources to purchase buses and carts for us to ride in and residents who need assistance in affording their monthly maintenance fees will receive it.

As you are aware, the mission of the John Knox Village Foundation is to operate exclusively for the benefit of, to perform the functions of and to carry out the purposes of John Knox Village. Your Foundation Board of Directors keeps that in mind in everything we do.

Many of our contributions come from people who have enjoyed the comforts of living at John Knox Village in the past and/or their families who want to share those benefits with others. This is the wonderful part of philanthropy - the generous spirit of time and money that, given now, will help others in the future.

Nanette Olson, the Foundation’s executive director, has helped many residents make contributions in the most economical way. She has enabled them to help John Knox Village and protect their assets, simultaneously, while taking advantage of the most beneficial income tax deductions available. This applies to an outright gift, a bequest or a charitable gift annuity. If you have any questions about contributions, Nanette is available to assist.

In closing, please join me in welcoming several new staff members. They are currently in the process of making life at John Knox Village a more interesting, safer and happier place to live.

Message from the President and CEO of John Knox Village

What a year 2015 was for our Foundation! Through Legacy Gifts, Charitable Gift Annuities and other thoughtful remembrances, the generosity of so many

has never made more of an impact for our campus and lives of our residents. In 2015, 727 gifts were given to the Foundation representing over $1.7 million to benefi t John Knox Village, today, and into the future.

The year saw real, concrete (literally and fi guratively) work taking place on the northwest corner of our amazing campus as our latest crown jewel, The Woodlands, rose majestically out of the soil to begin providing “Meaningful Life, in a Real Home, with an Empowered Staff!”

We are incredibly grateful for your support and ongoing generosity. Your kindness not only raises spirits, it raises roofs! You are a treasure to us. You make a difference and it shows.

Nanette Olson, Executive Director John Knox Village of Florida Foundation, Inc.

W hy does John Knox Village have a Foundation?

Occasionally, I am asked this question. Usually, it is from someone in the greater community who doesn’t know much about John Knox Village, but sometimes, it is from one of our own residents.

Simply stated, John Knox Village is a not-for-profit corporation with a generous culture that contributes to the quality of the lives of our residents. Your Foundation is also a supporting organization - a not-for-profit which was formed specifically to hold and raise funds for John Knox Village purposes. We cannot raise funds for any other reason.

Some funds take care of our environment; from the ducks, geese and swans to the tropical trees and Rose Garden. Another fund helps you get around; the Transportation Fund is used to purchase new cars and buses. And, there are funds to take care of each other when times get tough. We are fortunate to have many centenarians on

campus. Sometimes, we do outlive our resources. The Benevolent Endowment Fund and the Resident Assistance Fund support our residents who have diminished resources to pay their monthly maintenance fees.

On the last two pages of this annual report, you’ll find a list detailing all of the specific purpose funds that we have at the Foundation.

Need a resource to help you plan your charitable giving? I am an attorney, and although I do not represent individual residents since I work for the Foundation, I have been in Broward County over 35 years. I know some very accomplished professionals who can help you with your estate planning and with issues requiring the assistance of a certified public accountant or a financial advisor.

Whenever possible, the Foundation partners with financial professionals in the community to host seminars of interest to our residents. A well-informed Village is better able to make charitable planning decisions.

This is Your Foundation

Finally, your Foundation makes sure that you are thanked. We make it a priority to provide you with an acknowledgement in a timely manner that will allow you to claim a charitable deduction on your tax return. We also want to make sure your name is listed in the monthly Village Voice and in the Annual Report as one of our generous contributors. We want you to know that your gifts, of any size, truly make a difference!

“dead headers” in the Rose Garden, and Denny enjoyed staying fit by running on the treadmill in our Fitness Center. They were able to renew their vows at John Knox Village for their 50th wedding anniversary in August 2004 and, again, 10 years later when they celebrated their 60th anniversary.

Unfortunately, Toshiko suffered a series of strokes that necessitated her moving into Village Glen in February 2014. The strokes left her with memory issues that included “sundowning,” the phenomenon when a person becomes less oriented and suffers confusion later in the day.

For Toshiko, this included becoming fearful and afraid and anxious about being left alone. Denny visited every day from his apartment in Cassels Tower, but at night, it was very distressing for Toshiko.

The Inouye Family agreed that it was important to have someone stay with her at all times – as they were concerned about her safety and well-being. Through the John Knox Home Health Agency, Denny was able to provide a sitter to be with his wife 24/7 and calm her fears and anxiety.

After Toshiko went home to her Lord in December 2014, Denny came to The Foundation to inquire about setting-up a fund in his wife’s memory to provide sitters for residents who could not otherwise afford to pay to have someone stay with them or their loved one who suffers from the anxiety and

Famous author George Eliot (nee Mary Ann Evans) once wrote, “What do we live for,

if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?”

At the John Knox Village Foundation, we want to recognize those whose generosity and philanthropic nature improves and creates a lasting positive impact on our residents and their families.

One such benefactor is Dr. Kazuo (Denny) Inouye and his family. The Foundation would like to graciously thank The Inoye family for allowing us to share their story in order to inform residents about funds available to them in need that will help ease future financial stress should they be faced with a similar situation.

In 2003, Dr. Kazuo and Toshiko Inouye moved to John Knox Village after living in Lauderdale Lakes since 1964. Denny, as he prefers to be called, remembers being the first professional to open an office in Lauderdale Lakes. His dental practice was very successful and they made a good life there.

The late Ruth Horvath, a John Knox Village resident, and Toshiko met while waiting for their husbands in surgery. To pass the time, Ruth talked about how wonderful their life was at John Knox Village.

In addition, the Inouyes had many friends from their church who lived here. Because of these contacts, the Inouyes decided to move to John Knox Village after retiring from the dental practice.

The Inouyes enjoyed being involved in their new community. They were

fearfulness associated with “sundowning.” The entire Inouye family was very supportive of this idea.

Last September, the Inouye Family made a gift to The Foundation to set-up this fund which can only be used to benefit John Knox Village residents. The purpose of the fund states:

This fund will be used to pay for one-on-one care for John Knox Village residents in the health center or Village Glen who suffer from anxiety and are afraid to be alone. These residents have “sundowning” or other anxiety producing symptoms including physical agitation that make it better for them to have someone with them at all times.

Denny recognized that not everyone who needs this service is able to afford it. He knew how important it was for Toshiko, and he is making sure that all of his friends and neighbors at John Knox Village can get the same enhanced care if required. The Foundation is most grateful to the Inouye Family for supporting this idea.

The Foundation funds support many enhancements, here, at John Knox Village. As John Dalsimer explained in his article, this month, these funds serve to make your life and the lives of this community better.

John Knox Village celebrates memorable Tree Topping Ceremony.

W ith whistles blowing, more than 200 residents and guests helped signal

the raising of a Christmas palm to the top of our new skilled nursing center, The Woodlands at John Knox Village.

This was the highlight of the official Tree Topping Ceremony held on the morning of April 28 in the Heritage Tower parking lot.

In the construction industry, a Tree Topping (also known as a topping off ceremony), is one of the sector’s oldest customs. It is celebrated once the last beam is in place or concrete is poured to complete the structure of the building.

The tree – donated by Nanak’s Landscaping, Inc. of Deerfield Beach – and a U.S. Flag was placed on top of the finished seven-story building.

There were also several guest speakers, including City of Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher, John Knox Village Chief Executive Officer Gerry Stryker, President Robert Scharmann, Board Member Dirk DeJong and a special closing blessing by resident Reverend Dr. David Jenkins.

“We are also here to recognize the outstanding efforts of The Weitz Company and construction crews – the individuals who have remained dedicated to this project and maintained a safe environment,” said Stryker.

DeJong assisted with the presentation of a golden broom to representatives from The Weitz Company.

“This broom represents a clean sweep for safety and announces that the construction has reached its top height without serious injury or serious loss of life,” he said.

DeJong and numerous other individuals are working to make this dream become a reality. Also recognized at the ceremony were William Gallo (Owner’s Representative), of Gallo Herbert Architects; representatives from CECO Concrete Construction; and members of our Board of Directors and Foundation Board of Directors for their outstanding commitment to the project.

According to Scharmann, the whistle idea (with the new logo and tagline for The Woodlands at John Knox Village “Meaningful Life in a Loving Home”) came when he happened to walk onto the construction site and heard the distinctive sound of whistles.

Whistles, a Golden Broom and Raising a Tree

The attendees all blew whistles and watched as the Christmas palm, donated by Nanak’s Landscaping, Inc. of Deerfield Beach, was raised to the top of The Woodlands at John Knox Village.

Another significant moment was when a golden broom was presented to The Weitz Company representatives, Construction Superintendent Doug Just (holding broom) and Senior Project Manager Chuck Congdon Jr.

More than 200 residents and guests, including some of our Board of Directors, Foundation Board of Directors and elected officials (City of Pompano Beach Commissioner Barry Moss pictured center), attended the official Tree Topping Ceremony for The Woodlands at John Knox Village.

JKV Foundation | 7

He had asked Doug Just, Construction Superintendent with The Weitz Company, about them.

“It became obvious that the whistles were blown to inform everyone on the site that the crane was lifting materials. It is definitely clear that safety is the number one priority,” he said.

This innovative, nationally recognized initiative was founded by THE GREEN HOUSE® Project. It acknowledges the individuality of seniors and honors their autonomy, choice, privacy and dignity. It’s a new level of personalized care that provides

meaningful life in a loving home and empowers staff dedicated to protecting, sustaining and nurturing the lives of our seniors.

The building will feature of total of seven floors and 144 private rooms and bathrooms. Each of the top six floors will have two Green House homes that will accommodate 12 seniors per home for short-term rehabilitative services and long-term nursing care. The first floor features a multi-purpose room, a bistro, rehabilitation services, a spa and an area for training purposes.

There are many individuals who have contributed to the planning and construction of The Woodlands at John Knox Village. Some of them are (l to r): Board Member, Dirk DeJong; Gallo Herbert Architects (Owner’s Authorization Representative), William Gallo; Director of Health Facilities, Mark Rayner; Chief Executive Officer, Gerry Stryker; Vice President of Gallo Herbert Architects, John Tice, and John Knox Village President, Robert Scharmann, .

Thanks Given During Annual Board DinnerJohn Knox Village leadership looks forward to an exciting 2016!

I t was the consummate celebration when John Knox Village’s leaders from inside and

outside our hedges came together for the recent Annual Board of Directors Dinner.

They had much for which to be thankful in 2015, while additionally directing their enthusiasm toward lofty goals planned for the now-upon-us New Year.

Held in the Lakeside Dining Room on Friday, November 13, the dinner was a reflection of that mindset. Tables adorned in silver and white magnificent ice sculptures, beautiful flower arrangements and a menu rivaling any of the finest eateries lining Las Olas or Atlantic Boulevards, greeted more than 70 guests that included residents, senior

management directors, board members and their guests.

Retiring board members Betsy Bousfield and Thomas Dieters were honored for their time and commitment to John Knox Village. One of our numerous active residents, Beverly Cardinal has been announced as John Knox Village’s newest board member.

Beverly takes over for Betsy, who successfully completed her three-year stint as one of three residents serving on our board of directors. The other two are Boots Maurer and Carol Kamman. As past president of the Resident Senate, Beverly has always remained a dedicated volunteer at John Knox Village.

The dinner also included appreciation for the hard work of John Knox Village’s Foundation Board of Directors. The Foundation introduced its new board member, Village Towers resident Franklin Schmidt. Nancy Lee Matthews also was honored for her many contributions.

Nancy Lee Matthews, pictured on the right, is thanked by Beverly Cardinal for her service to the Foundation Board of Directors.
