LSU HistoryLouisiana State University was founded by the Louisiana General Assembly in 1853 under the name Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy. It was located near Pineville, LA, with the first session beginning January 2, 1860. The superintendent Colonel William Tecumseh. The school closed June 30, 1861, because of the Civil War. It reopened on April 23, 1863, due to the invasion of the Red River Valley by the federal army. The seminary reopened October 2, 1865, only to be burned October 15, 1869. On November 1, 1869, the institution resumed its exercises in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where it has since remained. In 1870, the name of the institution was changed to Louisiana State University. Louisiana State Agriculture and Mechanical College was established by an act of the legislature, approved April 7, 1874, to carry out the U.S. Morril Act of 1862, granting lands for this purpose. It temporarily opened in New Orleans, June 1, 1874,where it remained until it merged with Louisiana State University in 1877. Some of their other campuses are LSU at Shreveport, LSU at Eunice, LSU at Alexandria, and many more. 4. Other Information Shaquille ONeal graduated from LSU with a Bachelor of General Studies degree. Also, in 2000, he was the NBA MVP. He was also the 1992-1993 NBA rookie of the year. He has also earned NBA finals MVP three times and was the NBA scoring champion twice. A 15- time all-star, he was a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team in 1996.Another great basketball player that shared a lot of accomplishments as Shaquille andmany more was Peter Press, Pete Maravich. He was one of the greatest basketball playersof all time. He is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the NBA Hall of Fame. He is amember of the 50-year Top 50 team. After almost 40 years, Maravich is still the all-time NCAA career-scoring leader, holds the single season NCAA scoring record and the scoringrecords for a Sophomore, Junior, and Senior. One of LSUs famous sites is the Indian Mound which is estimated to be over 5,000 years old. 8. Why? I would like to attend LSU because my family went there and had nothing but good things to say about it. Also, the college is close to home so I will not have to spend extra money to stay on campus. LSU has good traditions that are related to my home state and culture. They also have great academics and athletic programs. 9.
