FROM THE PARTICIPANTS

Zalman is very fortunate to have a rich life with a lot of regular activities and opportunities.

As well as Maccabi’s weekly swimming and basketball, Zalman attends Friendship Circle on Sundays and drumming on Tuesdays.

Wednesday nights he stays over at Manders Villas respite facility and has the opportunity to practise independent living skills and socialise with friends both in respite and the independent living units.

Thursdays and Fridays he attends the life skills and art program at Access at Beth Weizmann. He also volunteers and has a part time job.

Michelle Feiglin (mother)

I enjoy spending a night every week at respite [at the Villas]. It's fun. I like being there. It gives me time away from mum and dad. I cook my dinner and make my bed.

I go to drumming [with Access] every Tuesday evening. We play the drums and dance. It's a lot of fun

I train with the Dolphins [Maccabi All Abilities team] every Monday. We practice teamwork and play basketball. I really love it.

FOREWORD From the Social Inclusion Leadership Committee

It is with great pride that I present the inaugural Jewish Disability Service Directory; a guide to the support services available in the Melbourne Jewish Community for people with disabilities and their families.

The directory compliments the admirable efforts of the recently established Social Inclusion Leadership Committee (SILC), where I proudly sit as the Chairperson. SILC brings together a new group of leaders from 13 Victorian organisations. The Committee is set up to lead a campaign of realisation and change that actively promotes the inclusion of all Jewish people with a disability in community life in Victoria.

This guide is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Jewish disability services in Victoria. These organisations recognise the importance of working in partnership to help create a richer and more diverse society by sharing knowledge and resources, cross-referring and enhancing unity in supporting people with a disability.

As Chairperson of SILC, I am passionate about developing and promoting actions that create a more inclusive community. We want to endorse projects such as this directory, which offers support to people with disabilities, their families and carers. It can be commended on being a ‘one-stop-shop’ for members of the community with a disability and their families, by offering a clear and simple overview of relevant local services, all in one booklet.

Through a collaborative and unified approach, the guide seeks to bring the entire community together. It aims to create more social awareness about the uniqueness of each of the presented organisations and the variety of services on offer for this special group of people.

I look forward to being part of the journey to creating a more inclusive, tolerant and diverse Melbourne Jewish community.

MELBOURNE JEWISH CHILDREN’S AID SOCIETY INC.

About Our aim is to support the inclusion of children with a disability into the Melbourne Jewish day schools. Our funds are raised from two main sources - the Posh Opp Shoppe (484 Glen Huntly Road, Elsternwick) under the management of our volunteer co-ordinator, Rosalie Silverstein OAM as well as generous benefactors. The shop is operated by the Melbourne Jewish Children’s’ Aid Society Inc. a long established charitable organisation.

Eligibility JSIP was started in 1989 with a handful of students. Today we are supporting over 240 annually. To qualify for funding the school is required to submit an annual application form on behalf of each student. The funding process is transparent and equitable and relies on strict government criteria. Every application must be supported with evidence, which may come from a doctor, psychologist, therapist and so on.

Types of programs

In addition to financial help to the schools. JSIP sponsors a network to support teachers and assistants and provides training opportunities in best practice for inclusion to make mainstreaming a success. The coordinator also provides emotional and practical support to families.
