The Witte Museum’s collection, exhibition, curatorial teams, as well as other museum professionals and amazing volunteers, packed and photographed every artifact in new housing for their move and storage as we prepare for the New Witte. By this spring, every artifact in the Witte’s
collection, about 300,000, will be newly housed in state-of-the-art, conservation safe storage, with the exception of the stellar artifacts on display in the Robert J. and Helen C. Kleberg South Texas Heritage Center and the B. Naylor Morton Research and Collections Center.

Letter from the President
MISSION STATEMENT The Witte Museum promotes lifelong learning through innovative exhibitions, programs and collections in natural history, science and South Texas heritage.
Dear Friends,
There is no more daunting experience than to walk into a beloved Witte Museum gallery
that has been emptied after three decades. The Texas Wild dioramas have been redone and
reframed several times over the past several decades, but never removed until now. Each
diorama was carefully, painstakingly deconstructed — first, the beautiful taxidermy specimens,
including animals now extinct, and second, the exquisite plants, some made of wax, with tiny
insects affixed to petals and stems.
The authenticity of the dioramas is what has made them so beloved: Adults today remember,
as children, encountering the black bear in the Piney Woods and then, across the gallery, a
male turkey along a Hill Country river, or a mule deer felled by a mountain lion in far West
Texas. The journey from one astonishing Texas landscape to another is the power of a diorama,
an up-close experience with wildlife only possible in a museum. We are fortunate that because
of the nature of these particular dioramas, the origins of which are on McLean family ranches
from all parts of Texas, the McLean Family wished to preserve and bring them back in a larger,
more modern Texas Wild gallery in the New Witte. In their honor, the gallery will be called the
McLean Family Texas Wild Gallery. The McLean family members shared our anxiety as the
dioramas were deconstructed, but to the joy of all, the great Witte exhibition, collections and
curatorial teams ensured the success of the move. (Among the most sensitive and complex
removal were the murals in the dioramas, but we are pleased to report that Conservator Ann
Zanikos and her assistant, Scott Jennings, carefully rolled the murals off their curved walls
onto large rollers so they could be cleaned and preserved until reinstallation.) The dioramas
and thousands of additional artifacts will move to a newly purchased, state-of-the-art storage
building where they will be conserved and prepared to return to the modern new galleries.
Although we miss the squeals of children as they entered the galleries in the Main Building,
we only have to stroll to the H-E-B Body Adventure or to the Robert J. and Helen C. Kleberg
South Texas Heritage Center to hear school children roaring with laughter or families and
busloads of tourists humming along as they listen to vaqueros, cowboys and Chili Queens
InterActors, or the cinerobotic Tejano Freighter as he prepares to rest after a long journey
across the rugged terrain.
We are pleased to note that beginning Spring Break, the Witte Main Building will again be
receiving visitors for blockbuster exhibitions in the Kathleen and Curtis Gunn Gallery, including
the Fiesta exhibit, Jewels of the Court: A Journey Through Fiesta’s Coronation, with more than
30 coronation gowns and elements of the Battle of Flowers Parade. Next, Discover the Ice
Age will open May 23 as the summer blockbuster, with 10 animatronic creatures, including the
Wooly Mammoth, Terror Bird and Sloth, among others – all breathing icy cool fun in the hot
summer months.
Change is hard, but growth is good. Come share the transformation of your Witte Museum.

Jewelsof theCourtA Journey
Through FiesTA’s CoronATion
Come celebrate Fiesta like never before at the Witte Museum. The 2015 Witte Museum Fiesta exhibition, Jewels of the Court: A Journey Through Fiesta’s Coronation, will showcase the two-year process for planning and executing the Order of the Alamo Coronation, Fiesta’s most glamorous event, and will feature more glittering crowns, dresses and trains than ever before. More than 30 coronation robes from the early 1900s to today will provide historical perspective to the Fiesta royalty fashion. Visitors will learn about the many events that led up to the actual coronation to the Battle of Flowers Parade, the last official appearance of
the royal court.
This exhibit is more wonderful than can be imagined and not to be missed!
