Part One Here is a conversation between two friends, Sue and Janet. Write each verb in brackets in the correct tense. The first one has been done for you.

I wish I had brought (bring) my camera. The view from here is

terrific!

Yes it is, isn’t it? Do you remember the view from the hotel balcony

when we were in Corfu last year? We 1 (see)

right over to the mainland, couldn’t we?

Yeh. The thing that I remember most is the swimming. We

2 (go swimming) every day and since we

came home I 3 (not go swimming) once.

Neither have I, but I 4 (go) to the gym every

week for the last six months and running on the treadmill for an hour at

least.

That’s good. After the holiday I 5 (intend) to join a

gym but I never got round to it. Which gym do you go to?

I 6 (go) to the old gym in Highbury Street

but it 7 (close down) by the council two

months ago because some of the equipment wasn’t safe. So then

11 I joined the new gym by the university in London Road.

Part One (continued) 12 What’s it like? Is it an improvement on the old gym? It’s great. 13 It has all the latest equipment and a fabulous sauna and steam

room.

I 8 (not try) a sauna before, but 14 I’ve

always wanted to.

15 You should try it. It’s really good for you. You 9

(treat) yourself!

Good idea. Does the new gym have a website?

Yes, it does. I think I have the address on a card in my wallet. Great. I 10 (contact) the gym tonight and find

out more about it.

which gym I went to. I told her 11

and she asked me 12 .

I told her 13 and

a great sauna and she said she had never tried a sauna before but

14 . So I said

Part Three Here are some extracts of a conversation between Leo and his friend Chris. Write a suitable response in each numbered space. Could you do me a favour? Of course. What is it? Could you give me a lift to Manchester tomorrow morning? 16 Thanks mate. There’s a problem with my car and I can’t get it fixed

until next week. It’s going to cost me a fortune. 17 Why do you have to go to Manchester? I’ve got an appointment at the dentist at ten o’clock. I’m really

nervous. I hate going to the dentist. 18 Last time I went he gave me two fillings – with no anaesthetic! 19

Part Three (continued) No, really. If you’re not too busy, do you fancy going to the pub

afterwards? I think I’ll need a drink! 20 , I’m a bit broke at the moment though. 21 The drinks are on me. It’s the least I can do as you’re giving me a lift. I like your new car, by the

way. 22 . Didn’t I tell you? I won it in a competition. 23 Yeah and it’s great to drive. You can drive it tomorrow if you like. 24 I think my insurance will cover you so there shouldn’t be any problem, 25

No, that should be fine. See you about nine tomorrow.
