Palm Sunday
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna! “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Big Questions
1. Imagine a king arriving in your town. What would the celebrations be like?
2. Jesus arrived on a donkey without a fancy procession. What do you think about this?
Jesus wasn’t a normal king who was surrounded by luxury, he lived among the people he loved. He came to show God’s love and to serve people, not to have people serve him!
News started to spread that Jesus was arriving and lots of people were excited to welcome him because they had heard stories of all the amazing things he had been doing. They covered the dirt roads with palm leaves and their clothes to show their respect for Jesus. Imagine the celebrations! People cheered for Jesus and waved palm leaves as he entered Jerusalem.
3. What does the word hosanna mean? 4. How would you feel if Jesus came to your town? What would you do
to welcome him?

Craft
Have a go at making one of these palm leaves crafts. You could write things you want to praise God for on the leaves. When you have finished,
you could put your creation somewhere where you can look at it and remember all the people cheering for Jesus as he entered Jerusalem.

Prayer
We heard about the people shouting “Hosanna” to Jesus when he entered Jerusalem. This means “save us”. What do you need God’s help with
today? How do you need him to save you? Say a prayer thanking Jesus for being our King, just like he was in today’s Bible story and ask him for any
help you need. He loves you and wants to hear your praises!
