Hopefully all the boys can replicate the successes and achievements on the sports field thus far this year with their academic performances and continue the advancements in this regard. From a matric perspective, we had a wonderful Valediction two weeks ago and are looking forward with quiet confidence to a good set of final results and the elusive 100% matric pass rate. A full report with all the Valedictory prize winners will be featured in the next newsletter. In the other grades, I implore both parents and boys to ensure you are at school for the important final week of academic lessons and then put the required amount of effort and time into studying for the final exams. I also draw the attention of parents to our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, 7th November whereat the main order of business will be the approval of the 2019 budget – please could all parents make every effort to attend this important event. As all parents will know from previous newsletters and communication, the "Parent Portal" is now open on Ed-Admin and is proving to be a great success, and important source of information, for many parents. What is of concern is that, as of last week, parents associated with 923 email addresses had not yet logged into the system. I encourage all parents who have not yet utilised the Parent Portal to do so as we will be using the portal as a communication and information tool in an ever increasing capacity going forward. The safety and security of our boys remains a priority and it has thus been disturbing to learn of various incidents of petty theft and crime taking place in the suburb of Kensington and the vicinity of the Jeppe campus over the past few months. Whilst there have been no incidents on campus there have been various incidents in the vicinity of Jeppe and we encourage parents and pupils to report any suspicious vehicles or persons to security. From a school perspective, we will continue to remind boys to be vigilant and to emphasize to them the importance of waiting inside the school for parents to pick them up in the afternoons or on weekends following sporting or academic activities. I look forward to seeing as many boys and parents, particularly from the Grade 8 group, at the upcoming Armistice Day service on Sunday, 11th November, a significant event this year as we remember the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1. Good luck, to both parents and boys, for the final run in to the end of the year and the conclusion of a very busy, and successful, 2018. Dale Jackson HEADMASTER

REMINDER OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Parents are hereby reminded of the Annual General Meeting taking place on Wednesday 7 November 2018 at 18:00 in the Memorial Hall. All parents are encouraged to attend. A summary of the budget will be available for review two weeks before the meeting, from the front office of the school.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER REGARDING RECENT PRESS ARTICLES Dear parents and members of the Jeppe community, Many parents will no doubt be aware that Jeppe High School for Boys, and certain of our educators, have recently been referred to in the press, particularly the Saturday Star, as a result of the issues flowing from a court case involving a staff member of Parktown Boys' High School. It is our considered view that any association of our educators named in these articles - namely Messrs Hillock and Hansen - with, or implication in, the recently revealed wrongdoings at Parktown are, on the evidence currently before us, unfounded. As boarding masters responsible for approximately 170 pupils on an annual basis, there will be disagreements with learners, particularly when one has to implement disciplinary measures. However, from a Jeppe perspective, we believe both educators have done an extremely good job and continue to run successful, well-structured and caring boarding houses for the boys and staff therein. The wellbeing of our boys will always take precedence at Jeppe and their safety will always be our primary concern. However, we also have to recognise the tremendous care, professionalism and dedication of our staff and until presented with evidence showing wrongdoing at Jeppe, we will continue to stand alongside our educators and request that as parents and members of the Jeppe community, you do the same. As a school we have worked extremely hard over the past few months to address some of the challenges and perceived concerns raised by the incidents at Parktown Boys' High School regarding traditional, public boys’ schools. I have spoken at length, in assembly addresses, speeches and discussions with staff, parents and boys about the importance of speaking up when injustice is being done, dispensing with any remaining non-affirming traditions within the school, taking a zero tolerance approach to any form of initiation and emphasising the positive aspects of the "brotherhood" of which Jeppe boys feel so strongly. We will continue to adopt this approach in our effort to ensure that Jeppe is a forward looking, innovative and progressive school whose deep roots and traditions should be a positive and affirming characteristic of our school and a rock on which our foundations are built rather than a weight which ties us down. Should any parents require further clarification regarding the above matters and associated press reports, or have continuing concerns, or are aware of incidents which are contrary to our code of conduct and ethos, we invite and encourage them, as we did with the journalist in question, to contact either myself as headmaster at [email protected] or the SGB Chairperson, Mr Michael Berger at [email protected] , so that we can meet up, discuss and allay any concerns.

The Headboy, Liam Stott, will be ably assisted by his deputies, Sibusiso Shongwe and Matthew Du Preez. With six other potential candidates, these gentlemen went through a rigorous interview process before a panel of the school executive and educators, before being selected. We wish them great success for the year ahead and have no doubt they will lead the school with integrity, honour and pride. Well done, gentlemen – now is your time to shine!

PIPE BAND – GEDDES CUP The 42nd edition of the Geddes Cup, the internal drumming and solo piping competition took place in the Payne Hall on Friday 12th October. The Geddes Cup competition was started in 1968 and has continued throughout the years to give opportunity to and improve the standard of playing among the individual members of the Band and, to allow them to get the feeling of playing alone in front of an audience and a judge. Old Boy and piper in the Jeppe Band, Bobby Geddes, donated the trophy, to be presented to the best piper on the night. This year's competition was made all the more exciting by the presence of an international adjudicator, Donald MacPhee, arguably the best solo adjudicator in the world, as well as an extremely accomplished piper himself. It was a tremendous privilege for the Jeppe Pipe Band to secure Donald’s services for the evening. Mr MacPhee also treated the audience to a solo piping exhibition. The evening was very well attended by the band's supporters as well as a number of guests from the South African piping and drumming fraternity. The competition is about more than just winning the prize, it aims to build character and band morale. The band members are incredibly supportive towards one another on the evening and they look forward to the Geddes Cup with much excitement every year. GRADE 6 SCIENCE OLYMPICS The 7th annual Jeppe High School for Boys Grade 6 Science Olympics was held on Wednesday 17 October. Grade 6 boys and girls from 15 Jeppe feeder primary schools took part in an afternoon of learning, fun and being exposed to Jeppe as a school of opportunity. Our sister school was also involved in the event in order to accommodate the girls from the participating primary schools. There was an extended programme this year which included a quiz, Biology experiment, Physical Science experiments and display as well as a Technology component where the learners were guided through a Google lesson using the school Chrome Books. It is very often that this is the first time many of these learners get to work in fully equipped and functioning laboratories as well as using technology in the classroom and the pure enjoyment and wonder of the experience for them, is extremely rewarding for the educators and assistants from the school who are involved in the programme. A prize is awarded to the winning school, the top boy learner and the top girl learner as well as certificates for high achievers. These awards are based on the results from the quiz component of the programme. The top 5 scores for each school are tallied and the school with the highest total is then the winning school. The highest marks achieved by an individual boy and girl are awarded the top learner prizes. The winning school this year was Dunvegan Primary School who were absolutely delighted, especially as the top boy learner was also from Dunvegan. The top girl learner was from Hardford College. Our Headmaster, Mr Jackson, was on hand to address the learners, educators and parents and to present the prizes. He then delighted the learners by having a photo taken with them. Thank you to Mr White and his team for organising this much enjoyed event in our calendar. GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION – SCIENCE FAIR QUIZZ Jeppe High School for Boys excels at the 2018 Gauteng Department of Education Science Fair Quiz With 15 districts in the province and a total of about 5 000 grade 9 students, Jeppe Boys won the competition after three gruelling rounds, proudly represented by our intelligent young scientists - James Kamerman, Thomas Kirby and Teka Nnete. The school was also privileged to host the Science Fair, which was officially opened by our Headmaster, Mr Dale Jackson. The Gauteng Provincial Head Office organised the event which was coordinated by Ms Boitumelo, (Johannesburg East Subject Specialist for Natural Sciences),

Mrs J. Wasonga, (Coordinator of Natural Science at Jeppe and Johannesburg East-Inner City Schools Lead teacher) and supported by Mr Shaun McGeer, (Head of the Science Department) and Mr Hamdan Kaggwa, (Educator Geography department). Two schools from each of the 15 districts participated in Round 1 which consisted of multiple choice questions. Only six schools proceeded to Round 2, which included the three learners from Jeppe Boys. In Round 2, a set of extremely challenging questions were put to the team which then had to be answered by the team leader. Thomas Kirby was the team leader, representing Teka Nnete and James Kamerman. Jeppe Boys again maintained their resilience and emerged the winners in this round and they then proceeded, with only two other schools, to the third and final round. In round 3, a practical had to be completed. The Jeppe team were outstanding in defeating the other two competing schools and emerged the winners of the 2018 Science Fair for Natural Sciences, the first of its kind to be held for Senior Phase learners in the Gauteng Province. SOCCER – KENSINGTON COMMUNITY CUP At the end of September, Jeppe High School for Boys hosted the 1st Kensington Community Cup Soccer Festival. Teams from the high schools in the area, including Kensington Secondary School, Jules High School, Malvern High School and Denver High School took part and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to compete against each other under the watchful eye of MEC, Mr Lesufi who took time out of his busy schedule to be with these youngsters doing what they love. This festival was a resounding success and it is envisaged that it will become an annual event. Thank you to the enterprising staff members at Jeppe who took the initiative to make this happen.

Northey, MIC Debating 2018 has seen Jeppe High School for Boys reach new heights within the Gauteng debating community, having entered several new competitions and progressing through several rounds of various debating leagues and formats. On the Model UN front – our boys competed in two mini-Model UN debates, in which they tackled issues surrounding human rights abuses, the world refugee crises and the State of International security. Model UN requires a keen knowledge of current affairs, and a tremendous amount of research into the domestic and foreign policies of several countries – all skills which our boys have mastered, as is evident from their trophies as best delegation and best speakers in both events. At the National Model UN conference, hosted at Wits on the 15th of September our boys walked away with two first place trophies for the Best position paper (Norway) in the UN Energy Committee and Best Delegation (Brazil) in the United Nations Development Committee. Term 1 and 2 saw the senior first and second team, as well as the junior team take part in two extremely competitive events – The SACCEE and Atheneum Debating Leagues. The first team in particular broke Jeppe History, by making it to the final knock out stages of the SACCEE provincial

championships, winning 9 out of 14 debates and placing Jeppe High School for Boys in the top 12 debating schools in Gauteng. Term 3 saw both the junior and senior teams being invited to the highly selective Gauteng Provincial Schools ‘Debating Championship, where they both won 3 out of 6 debates. Although they did not qualifying for the finals, the achievements of these teams, at this level, far surpassed any previous results. We are extremely proud of the debating teams who have shown enormous growth and have learnt a tremendous amount of content knowledge and skills in adapting to different styles of debating.

EMERGENCY CARE REPORT The Jeppe Emergency Medical Care Club continued their dominance of the Provincial Interschool’s First Aid competition in September, by winning the senior division and coming 1st and 2nd in the juniors. The school entered three teams in the novice division two in the junior and one in the senior. The Jeppe High School for Girls First Aid club is closely associated with the boys – they train together – and they came second in the seniors and third in the juniors, making it pretty much a black and white clean sweep. Grade eight boy, Aqeel Ismail also came first in the theoretical exam that the leaners who don’t make it into the final write. The inter-school competition consists of a classroom exercise elimination round followed by a simulation round in which the top three teams have to respond to a pretty realistic scenario that has been set up outside. The teams have to respond and are marked on their assessment, systems, procedures and actions, which our senior team did much better than the other finalists. The secret to Jeppe’s success is that the club does not only operate on a theoretical level. They are on duty all day, every day and in a school like Jeppe with its high number of boarders, non-stop activities and complex campus, there are often incidents that have to be dealt with. The boys, therefore, go into the competition having seen and attended to many of the scenarios in real life. Jeppe has now won the competition’s Chris Hart Trophy, (named after a former teacher at the school), every year since 2014, except for last year when they didn’t enter and Jeppe Girls won it. The school also often receives letters from members of the public (many included in previous newsletters) commending the Emergency Care Team on their efforts and assistance. They are truly a group of boys with the best interests of the school learners as well as the community at heart- they are our unsung heroes.

PUBLIC SPEAKING 2018 by S. Northey, MIC Public Speaking The progress of Public Speaking at the school has been most pleasing this year with a significant increase in both the number of boys participating as well as the number of Public Speaking events that they competed in. The year started off with the Speech and Drama College High School Public Speaking Festival, where two teams from each grade participated in top quality speech evenings, with many receiving A+ symbols.

Travis Kroggel and Thando Mjiyako – two of our very talented Public Speakers

In the second term, the learners participated in several categories of the Speech and Drama Schools festival, including for the first time ever competing in the categories of “Great Speeches of our Past” and “Dramatic Monologue” sections, for which the quality of Jeppe High School for Boys was highly praised. Our learners made significant improvements to their speaking styles, and Jeppe High School for Boys received many accolades including prestige and gold certificates, as well as the Trophy for best senior individual prepared speech by Jonathan Bosch, entitled Why I am An Atheist. The boys have been keeping up to date with their speaking techniques by taking part in internal termly Speech Evenings, where they were judged and given feedback by several esteemed judges of the Johannesburg Public Speaking Guild. In these events, boys are encouraged to express their thoughts and opinions on any topic and some incredibly personal, funny and informative speeches were presented. We look forward to the continued growth in numbers and strength of ability in the Jeppe High School for Boys Public Speaking fraternity.

Tsessebe were the winners of the Inter-house competition and were awarded the Prefect’s Shield for 2018. Well done to all the boys who participated so spiritedly in this completion – especially in the events that were far removed from their normal activities. Thank you to Mr Hillock, who really drove this programme this year, as well as all the educators, coaches and staff members who assisted with the different events. Due to the hard work of all concerned, this was a highly successful competition. COMMENDATIONS We are always proud and delighted when our learners uphold the name of the school and display what being a “Jeppe Boy” is really all about. Below are two emails received from members of the public - one after spending time at the school and the other after being in contact with some of our learners at Burger King.

Dear Sir/Madam On Friday the 21st of September our under 12 Gauteng West cricket team had the privilege to play their first games at your school, and what an experience it was!!! I just need to compliment and congratulate you on the well-mannered and disciplined boys you have in your school. I haven’t walked past one of the boys that hasn’t greeted me in a proper manner, and in their break times there was a whole lot of the boys who stood next to field and the support they gave to the cricket boys was something I haven’t experienced ever, it actually gave me the chills. Well done on the discipline that you maintain in your school, you can be proud of your boys at Jeppe High school for Boys.

Hi Mr Jackson, I have been asked to please send this to you by an old school friend of mine. She sent me the attached WhatsApp message yesterday, commending a group of Jeppe boys she spotted over the weekend at Burger King. She was with her son, who is a learner at St. John’s. It is my pleasure to send this on to you, as it is such a great reflection of Jeppe pride.

And then a wonderful letter from a parent from which an excerpt has been taken: -

Dear Mr Jackson Sir. I trust this e-mail finds you well and in good health. I honestly don't know where and how to start this e-mail. I guess I should let my heart guide me on this one. Please allow me take this opportunity to convey my utmost humble gratitude to you and the rest of your team. When my son was 8 years old he had a conversation with a learner who had been at Jeppe Boys for 2 years at that time. This was regarding the school and what he liked about Jeppe Boys. This particular boy had transformed from the boy we knew at primary school to this young man who walked tall and wore that black & white blazer with pride. What this boy said stayed with my son from that day. He suddenly became a huge Jeppe Boys supporter which meant he no longer went to visit his friend because of PlayStation, but because his friend's brother was now a Jeppe Boy and he and his friends could go support the big brother at this cool school. PlayStation became a thing of the past. The new kid on the block was now Jeppe Boys. At first I honestly thought this was a faze and it would pass. Little did I know that the Jeppe Boys bug is real. Once you catch it, it will never leave you. When my son was in grade 7 we received an e-mail from you indicating that applications for grade 8 were open and we should apply if interested. He knew he needed to work harder and achieve more if he wanted to be a Jeppe Boy. He put all the effort needed and indeed did manage to achieve a lot in that year of grade 7, which lead to him being accepted at Jeppe Boys. The day he received that blazer he made a promise to the whole school to wear that blazer with pride. I had my doubts, but I must say he has tried to the best of his ability to uphold that promise. I'm sure there were some difficulties along the way, but I must say as his mother I heard little of those. This is not because he was a saint, but he was at home and had a team of dedicated educators and supporting staff looking out for him. Today I am happy and sad at the same time that my son is now leaving the nest. As a single mother not once did I feel or experience the pain of raising this young men alone. He had many father figures, role models that I didn't even know. Some I hadn't even met, but I would hear my son say Mr so and so helped and sorted things out for me. You see Mr Jackson, every day we walk around the streets heavily burdened by life's challenges and difficulties. We are rushing to get somewhere and get it done. We don't stop for a second to greet or even

smile at the person walking pass or next to us however, Jeppe Boys has taught me and my whole family the real meaning of UBUNTU. I have been touched by what you and your team have done for me and my son. Yes in a few weeks he leaves Jeppe Boys to go search for greener pastures and experience life and adulthood. What I know for sure is that a great seed has been planted and it will grow to feed others just as it was fed. You all have been a pillar of strength to my son and me. I have seen him grow from strength to strength with a zest to be an even better person. So for that I am eternally grateful. I would like to end this by thanking the person who put his neck on the line and sponsored my son to be a boarder. All the educators and support staff who have given my son lunch when he didn't have. Textbooks when I couldn't afford to. The staff at the boarding houses who made sure that our boys’ meals were ready and their dorms were clean at all times. The team that kept all the fields clean and well maintained. The facility team that made sure that there was coffee when we came to watch all the sporting activities. The tuck shop staff and everyone who is involved in the daily activities of running the school. The valedictory will be one sad occasion for us as we move away from Jeppe Boys. It feels like it was just yesterday when my son put on that black and white blazer. What we didn't know was how quick it takes to turn black and white into Gold.

MYSCHOOL CARD We encourage all our parents to become involved in the MySchool Card initiative which currently raises in the region of +- R5 500 per month for the school in additional funds. These funds are a valuable source of income for the school which supplement our school fees and are used in many ways to enhance the learning, sporting and cultural experience of the boys in the school. To sign up for a MySchool Card, simply go to their website (www.myschool.co.za) and following the directions. Select Jeppe High School for Boys as your beneficiary school. Your card will then be sent to you. Forms and cards are also available from the school, from Mrs Jarvis. Please enquire at the Front Office. For those parents who are already on the system, we would like to encourage you to include Jeppe High School for Boys as a beneficiary. This may be done on the MySchool website.
