The 2014 Assistants in Nursing Conference focused on strategic nursing workforce planning and development of a suitable model of care for the AIN role, looking at a variety of implementation approaches from pilot sites and services who have established the role; addressing challenges around appropriate training, mentorship, scope of practice and role evaluation. Fiona Stanley Hospital • More than 780 beds, including 140-bed state rehabilitation service • 16 operating theatres • Two maternity wards, plus paediatrics • Large specialist units for intensive care, mental health and coronary care • A new state burns service • The biggest emergency department in WA • Will be opened progressively in a four-phased sequence

Some changes in health care in WA • Royal Perth Hospital – currently 855 beds. Will have focus on emergency medicine and trauma, and elective surgery • QEII Medical Centre – includes Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (over 600 beds), new children’s hospital to be opened late 2015 • Fremantle Hospital – currently 450 beds, will be 300 bed specialist facility and elective surgery • RPH Shenton Park campus and Kaleeya Hospital closing 2014 • Swan Districts Hospital – currently 193 beds, will be replaced by Midland Health Campus, over 300 beds • Opening of Fiona Stanley Hospital

Collaboration between industry and RTO to facilitate an education program for existing staff • December 2013 – second priority group, 43 participants - Armadale, Swan Districts, Rockingham, Northam • January 2014 – First aid training commenced • February – July 2014 – 132 participants completed - Acknowledgement Ceremony at FSH • April 2014 – EOI re-advertised, 75 responses • September 2014 – program anticipated to conclude
