The deadly Coronavirus, like the Spanish Influenza, is currentlyspreading like a wild fire around the world and is taking tolls on lives ofpeople on its path. This deadly disease might sound strange and new tomany, including even health care providers and experts, but, actually,Jehovah’s Witnesses, a religious group, had sounded a warning of itsemergence 15 years ago, in one of its magazines, Awake!

Writing on the subject “The Next Global Epidemic, WHEN?”the December 22, 2005, edition of Awake! did not only raise the alarmthat a pandemic virus might emerge in China or a nearby country, italso warned that it might emanate from an animal and could surfacefrom antigens or virulence factors derived from animal influenzaviruses.

The magazine quoted the medical journal, Vaccine, of 2003, whichwarned: “It has been 35 years since the last influenza pandemic, andthe longest interval between pandemics recorded with certainty in 39years. The pandemic virus may emerge in China or a nearby countryand could surface from antigens or virulence factors derivedfrom animal influenza viruses.

“It will spread rapidly throughout the world. Several waves of infectionwill occur. Morbidity will be extensive in all age groups, and there will bewidespread disruption of social and economic activity in all countries.Excess mortality will be evident in most, if not all age groups. It isunlikely that health care systems in even the most economicallydeveloped countries will be able to adequately cope with the demandfor health care services.”

In both gospelaccounts, we see Jesus referring to the Jewishprinciple, pikuach nefesh, which in short states“that the preservation of human life overridesvirtually any other religious rule..” And breakingthe Sabbath was punishable by death, even ifones’ sandles were simply too heavy, and theywere considered to be working.

I once had a worldly friend plead with me that ifmy child were to need a transfusion to save theirlife, to make the choice that saves their life.That’s precisely what Jesus is stating, in bothgospel accounts. Saving a life comes beforefollowing a law, especially a man-made law thathad no medical context until nearly 2,000 yearsafter it was written.

One of the last verses in the entire bible states,““I am bearing witness to everyone who hearsthe words of the prophecy of this scroll: Ifanyone makes an addition to these things, Godwill add to him the plagues that are written inthis scroll; 19 and if anyone takes anything awayfrom the words of the scroll of this prophecy, Godwill take his portion away from the trees of lifeand out of the holy city, things that are writtenabout in this scroll.”

From the bible itself, I urge you to not make adecision that is not scriptural, and that could costyou, or someone you love, their lives. All thatsaid, I’m an atheist, but I can see plainly thatthere is nothing scriptural about sacrificing yourchildren, or your own life, to satisfy yourreligious beliefs.

It is a biblical mandate for allof us to test, judge, discern,defend, proclaim. We do thiswith Scripture and the wisdomof the Holy Spirit (who ispersonal, not active force).Only God judges perfectly andultimately. Jesus did not say tonot judge, but to not judgefalsely and hypocritically.

Of course I can admit myshortcomings. To objectivelyexpose the destructive beliefsand practices of Mormons,JWs, Scientologists, Muslims,etc. is speaking truth in loveand a moral obligation.
