Jefferson County 4-H Family Newsletter

Volume XVIII, Issue 1 January 2018

New Beginnings As we flip the calendar into a new year, we look forward to our project

activity and experiential learning opportunities. The hands-on 4-H projects

provide a way to teach the essential elements of 4-H Youth Development. We

use our project learning to promote the essential elements of Belonging,

Mastery, Independence, and Generosity.

4-H Clubs expand access

so that all members can

develop a sense of

belonging. We want to

include everyone in the

club and help them find

friendships and success.

Through 4-H projects

members develop

skills that hopefully

the increase their

level of confidence as

master a task. When

we develop the

element of mastery,

we can apply skills

learned in one area to another and may begin to share what we’ve learned

with others.

Simultaneously, through our projects develop some independence. A task

once, mastered can be done independently. We hope that through your 4-

H experience, you develop skills of independence you can use in other

aspects of your life.

In giving back to our community through 4-H Community Service Projects

we share our generosity. We seek to be productive citizens of our

community. Ultimately, through our experiential learning we develop life

skills that will impact our community, our country, and our world, as we

help to make the best, better.

YOUTH TRACTOR & MACHINERY SAFETY

CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

The UW-Extension and Agriculture Instructors from

local schools are holding the 2018 Youth Tractor &

Machinery Safety Certification Program. This program

is for youth, 12 to 16 years of age, who plan on

operating a farm tractor on public roadways or work

near dangerous farm equipment. After successful

completion, students aged 14-16 will receive a

certificate. Without certification, Wisconsin law

prohibits any youth under age 16 from operating a

tractor (or self propelled implement of husbandry) on

public roads and Federal law prohibits youth from

working near dangerous equipment on farms other than

their parents. This course is essential in contributing

to the safety of our youth in agriculture.

The tractor safety course will kick-off on Saturday,

January 6th from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for youth to come

with a parent and learn about the tractor safety

program. Parents may leave or are more than welcome to

stay after the 45 minute class orientation. The youth

will then meet for the rest of the morning in addition to

the Saturday mornings of January 20, January 27,

February 3, 10 and 17 from 8 a.m.-noon for instruction.

Students will complete a written exam on February 17 as

part of that morning’s class. In addition, the youth must

pass a driving test which will be held on May 8th from

3:30-6 p.m. Classroom instruction and the written exam

will be held at the Jefferson County UW-Extension

office and the driving exam will be held at the

Jefferson County Fair Park. This certification program

is offered for all Wisconsin youth age 12-16, including

those from neighboring Counties.

Pre-registration for the course must be completed by

January 3, 2018. The fee is $35 for those registered no

later than January 3. After that date the fee will be

$45. For more information

please contact Kim or

Katelyn at the UW-

Extension, Jefferson County

Office at 920-674-7295 or

email [email protected].

Scholarships Available For Dues Did you know that the Jefferson County 4-H Program

provides scholarships to assist families who are unable to

afford the $25 dues required for membership? If your

family or a family you know is in need of a financial

assistance, please send an e-mail to

[email protected]. Please include the name(s)

of the youth needing assistance and their

4-H club. This information is kept confidential.

If you or someone you know would like to help youth in the

future please consider making a donation to the

Scholarship Dues fund. This can be done through the

UWEX Office; just indicate “Dues Scholarships” in the

check memo line or somewhere with your donation. We

are working hard to make 4-H accessible to everyone!

Dairy Promotion Funding Jefferson County Farm Bureau gets money from the

Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board to promote the dairy

industry and dairy products. This is a great opportunity

for clubs to promote dairy, and have some or all of the

expenses paid for. Interested clubs should contact

Melissa Gross by phone at 920-988-7583 or email

[email protected].

Newsletter Submissions If you are hosting a

project meeting, activity

or event that the entire

county should know about,

please be sure to submit

your article to the

Extension Office by the

15th of the month so it can

get in the newsletter. This includes any project meeting

dates, community service or fundraisers that might be

relevant to members outside of your club. Please note: we

may edit submissions based on newsletter space and

appropriateness.

If the weather looks bad in your area, stay home you will

be excused from training that night. As a general rule if

there is a snow storm (three or more inches/icy roads or

blowing snow) that evening we will not have

training/meeting. If in question stay home and call and

let us know it was weather related. Once we have emails

from the project members we will email to cancel

meetings, when the weather looks threatening.

Kate, Michele and the other trainers are looking forward

to meeting you and your dog.

GOATS

The next educational meeting is scheduled for January

25th at 7 p.m. at the Extension Office. Dr. Brad Luebbe

from the Jefferson Veterinary Clinic is our guest

speaker for the night. He will be educating us on the

topic of parasites in goats, which has been a requested

topic from many of the project members and parents.

This educational meeting does count as a point towards

the total that each project member needs to earn in

order to show at the county fair.

If you have not been receiving email updates for

meetings and other events, please email me your contact

info so that I can get you added to the mass email list.

CALLING ALL 4-H ALUMNI Did you or someone you know participate in 4-H when they

were younger. Whether they participated in 4-H in

Jefferson County or another state, we’d still like to

connect with our 4-H Alumni. There is a national effort to

connect current 4-H’ers with 4-H Alumni in their area.

Please share this link to the Google Form.

Farmington All-Stars In November, the Farmington All Stars did lots of cool

things. One of the things is the Tractor Farm and supply

fundraiser. Last month we went to Tractor Farm and

Supply and brought some animals to show people our

awesome animals that we show. We raised $50 for our

club! Our club is planning on helping out at a human

society, everyone is excited we are expecting too do it in

January. Also for Christmas this year the Farmington All

Stars are planning on adopting a family! This is where we

buy presents for a family that can't afford to get

presents. Our club does it every year and we love it. At

the end of last month some of our club members won

awards for their record books and other things,

congrats to them!

In December, we had a roller skating Christmas party

which was very fun, all of our members had a great time!

We are also doing adopt a family, as some families are

not as fortunate as us, so we would love to help them

have a Merry Christmas as well. This is where our club

bought presents for a family in need of help over the

holiday season. Our club also did bell ringing at Piggly

Wiggly in Jefferson for the Salvation Army. The kids in

our club were welcome to bring instruments and play.

The members that went sang Christmas carols and had a

great time! We are also hoping to make baby blankets

for the Fort Atkinson Hospital and go to more Loaves

and Fishes, which is where members from our club serve

people that come for a free meal. We are having great

holiday season so far, but we don’t stop there as we want

others too have a great holiday too!

Ava Oleniczak, Reporter

Rock Rivers The Rock Rivers held its December meeting on

December 6th at Rockwell Elementary School in Fort

Atkinson. We had project talks from Seeger Bos, Analisa

Boshart, and Kaitlyn Burke. Seeger Boss talked about a

woodworking project he did for the fair. He made a

bowl that was very nice and he was able to go to the

State Fair. Analisa Boshart talked about her many

chickens, and brought 2 of her chickens that she took to

the fair. Kaitlyn Burke talked about an art project she

took to the fair this year the was very nicely made. She

made flowers in a vase that are a decoration in her room.

In Old Business our club participated in 2 holiday

parades, in Fort Atkinson and Jefferson. This year we

made a Polar Express float for both parades. We also

participated in bell ringing for the Salvation Army at

Festival Foods. There was also a officer training for the

new officers that came on this new year.

In New Business our club will be putting on a Christmas

talent show at the Blackhawk Senior Residence for some

of the residents.
