South-west ; crossing the Dayou Carron in the rear of Washington, we ascend the

bluff, which was formerly the Western bar­rier of the Red River, and are upon the

common tab'e land, which extends to the

Bayou Cane. Passing amidst farms, and over a gently undulating country, we, at

tne distance of six miles reach Ouelousas,

the seat of justice. This town has a popu­

lation of some fifteen hundred inhabitants • is beautifully located, and is susceptible of

of being made one of the most charming

of our rural cities. It has a large and fer­tile country to supply, and from which,

with tue introduction of capital and energv,

it must inevitably reap a large benefit. There is a Female Seminary under the

direction of the Rev. B. F. White and his

accomplished Lady; a male school under ; the charge of the Rev. C. A. Frazee, both

j Protestant, and also a flourishing Convent and male school, under the'direction of our

Catholic neighbo s. Li addition to these old established schools, there is one which we do not desire to j a-s by without 'men­

tion, viz.: that under the direction of Mrs.

Dewees, who is conducting successfully an excellent priva e school for the education of young ladies.

In addition to these essential and well-conductcd institutions of learning, we have

a Methodist, Episcopal, and Catholic Churchy tue former under the Pastoral charge of the it.ev, John W ilkiuson, who is as nvich dis* tingushed for his talents as he is beloved

by his people. The Episcopal church has not at present a settled Pastor, but is for the time presided over by the Rev. Mr. Morrison, a gentleman of fine abilities, and

who seems to give much satisfaction to his flocit. Our town also possesses amongst other good things, skillful andaccomplished physicians-, who are perfectly acqtiain'cd. with Lise diseases incident to 0".r geographi­cal position ; and a bar, which for ability and learning, is second to none in the Sta'e j

^T" The Banner of last week takes ex­ception to that poi tion of our description of the Parish of St. Landry, which compares it to St. Mary, St. Martin and Yerinillion, in respect to the area of cach subject to inundation. We regret that our neighbor is offended with us, and we assure him that no paragraph in the article so severely con­demned by him, was prompted by a dispo­sition in us to " tear down." We respect *nd esteem him and his parishoners too highly, and are animated by too sincere a wish for the well-being of the whole coun­try to write or speak one word p-ith the intent charged against us.

This is the pressing need of the hour, and any scheme, or plan which promises practical results in this direction, should meet with the zealous support and co-ope­ration of every resident of.the parish.

£ho plan adopted by the gentlemen who have engaged in this matter, is a very sim-jpfe one, involving neither the expenditure .of «ûney, labor, or tune, and at the same t.me, we vertly believe, it is one, which, if earned out vigorously, will work wonders towards restoring otir parish to its former s<*m(?*na prosperous ooudition.
