Meet the new Chiropractors at the JCC!The JCC welcomes Dr. Kris Van Zeilen and Dr. Jason Bloom to provide our members with another excellent wellness service. Dr. Van Zeilen and Dr. Bloom are highly proficient in many different chiropractic techniques. With a wide range of benefits, both immediate and long-term, chiropractic care is natural, usually painless, and requires no drugs, surgery, or needles. One of the best benefits is that it corrects the underlying cause of many illnesses, improves posture, restores proper movement and mobility, improves spinal structure, and slows or stops spinal degeneration. Chiropractic care is located on the lower level of the JCC. For an appointment to receive a personalized screening, call 461-2000, ext. 282.

Dr. Kris Van Zeilen is a 2003 graduate of Life University College of Chiropractic and opened Van Zeilen Family Chiropractic and Wellness Center in 2006. He has a thorough knowledge and background in health, fitness and nutrition. Dr. Van Zeilen enjoys working with a wide range of patients, including infants to seniors.

Dr. Jason Bloom attended the College at Brockport, where he studied exercise physiology then continued on to Life University College of Chiropractic. Dr. Bloom excels in extremity adjusting and works primarily with teens, young adults and seniors.

The JCC of Greater Rochester will be relevant to every member

of our Jewish community.

The mission of the JCC is to strengthen Jewish identity and promote Jewish

continuity through all stages of life. This is accomplished in an environment that provides opportunities for meaningful

cultural enrichment, physical well being and social, educational and recreational experiences for individuals and families.

Dear JCC Members and Friends,

We are writing to share some important news with you. After careful deliberations of the findings of a diverse, multidenominational task force, the JCC Board of Directors has approved new guidelines regarding Shabbat and holiday closings.

Our review and these guidelines are in response to the overall question of how the center can best serve the community — as a welcoming gathering place for Jewish families with many different levels of observance and for members who are not Jewish. The current practices of JCCs across the country were also analyzed and benchmarked.

Beginning July 5, 2014, the JCC will open its doors at 8am on Saturday morning. Please check our website for specific holiday hours.

The JCC will explore, create, and implement programming on Saturdays consistent with the mission and vision of the JCC, while respecting the essential role of other Jewish institutions.

As always, we value your ongoing participation in JCC life and welcome your ideas as to how we can make our community even more vital and vibrant.

Sincerely,

Leslie Berkowitz Jeremy WolkExecutive Director President, JCC Board of Directors

Remembering the RiotsThis July marks 50 years since the 1964 Rochester race riots. At the time, Rochester was one of the most racially divided cities in the nation. White flight had led to the development of many beautiful suburbs throughout the Greater Rochester area, while the inner city faced growing poverty, racial conflict, and diminishing hope for a brighter future. At the height of this tension, what began as an altercation regarding the arrest of a young black male for alleged intoxication became a three-day city-wide riot. Four died, several hundred were injured, and almost a thousand people were arrested. Over 200 stores were looted and destroyed, and New York State Governor Nelson Rockefeller called out the New York National Guard to restore order.

The Rochester race riots were the end of the “old Jewish neighborhood.” The Jewish businesses that had remained in the Joseph Avenue area were ransacked and destroyed beyond repair. They never reopened, and the Jewish community continued its movement from the City of Rochester to the surrounding suburbs. Soon, the only synagogue that remained in the city was Congregation B’nai Israel Ahavas Achim, later led by Rabbi Henry Hyman.

In 1968, the national Kerner Commission published its famous report on the origins of recent northern race riots. The report famously warned that the nation was “moving toward two societies:

one black and one white—separate and unequal.” Almost 50 years later, in many ways, Kerner’s warning still rings true. Rochester remains one of the most racially divided cities in the nation, with a poor, struggling, black urban core amidst a sea of prospering white suburbs.

As we look toward a beautiful summer in Rochester, there will undoubtedly be many opportunities to learn about and remember the Rochester race riots. As Jews, we also remember these riots as a major turning point in the history of Jewish life in the Rochester area. But we can’t only look to the bleak past. We must also look to the future. The summer is a great time to rest and rejuvenate, but it’s also a great time to give back. We can provide immediate relief to those in need by contributing to food cupboards, which often run low during the long summer months. We can help improve opportunities for the city’s youngest, carving out time in our fall schedules to become a literacy volunteer, or become involved in urban improvement initiatives. As we look toward the continuation of Rochester Jewish life in the suburbs, may we never forget our origins in the city and the ways in which our own complex history is inextricably linked to this dark moment in Rochester’s past.
