Processional Verses (Stand)

Evening prayer, or Vespers, from the Latin word Vespera meaning “evening” is a worship service at the close of

the day that has its roots in the Jewish daily hours of prayer. In its transfer to the early Christian church and to

Vespers services today, it has kept its contemplative character, offering thanks for the mercies of the day, and

prayers for divine protection and the gift of inner peace. Vespers traditionally included the singing of psalms,

hymns and the canticle of Mary’s song Magnificat, as well as readings from scripture and the offering of prayers.

Psalm Prayer Leader: Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O God, and let your loving

kindness descend upon us, that with purified hearts we may sing your praise with the church on earth and the whole heavenly host, and may glorify you forever and ever.

All: Amen Psalm 23 People sing verses in bold print.

1The Lord| is my shepherd; I shall not | be in want. 2The Lord makes me lie down | in green pastures and leads me be- | side still waters. 3You restore my | soul, O Lord, and guide me along right pathways | for your name’s sake. 4Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall | fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they | comfort me. 5You prepare a table before me in the presence | of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil, and my cup is | running over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days | of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the | Lord forever. Psalm Prayer

Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, our good shepherd, you give us new birth in the waters of baptism, you anoint us with oil, and you nourish us at your table with heavenly food. In your goodness and mercy, dispel the shadows of evil and death, and lead us along safe paths, that we may rest securely in you and dwell in the house of the Lord now and forever, for your name's sake.

All: Amen

WORD

Reading: John 10:11-18 (The Message Translation)

11-13 “I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd puts the sheep before himself, sacrifices himself if necessary. A hired man is not a real shepherd. The sheep mean nothing to him. He sees a wolf come and runs for it, leaving the sheep to be ravaged and scattered by the wolf. He’s only in it for the money. The sheep don’t matter to him.

14-18 “I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own sheep and my own sheep know me. In the same way, the Father knows me and I know the Father. I put the sheep before myself, sacrificing myself if necessary. You need to know that I have other sheep in addition to those in this pen. I need to gather and bring them, too. They’ll also recognize my voice. Then it will be one flock, one Shepherd. This is why the Father loves me: because I freely lay down my life. And so I am free to take it up again. No one takes it from me. I lay it down of my own free will. I have the right to lay it down; I also have the right to take it up again. I received this authority personally from my Father.”

Leader: Word of God. Word of life. All: Thanks be to God. Reflection (sit) Following the Reflection and some silence: Leader: Jesus said, I am the light of the world. All: Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness.
