Complete Live at the Sutherland Lounge 1961

This release presents a complete never before released concert by the Thelonious Monk Quartet taped in December of 1969, during what would be Monk’s last European tour with his own quartet, and his last tour ever with Charlie Rouse on tenor sax.

Among the highlights of this performance (which boasts excellent sound quality), is an 11-minute version of the standard tune My Ideal, a song long favored by Monk’s long time friend and mentor Coleman Hawkins, who had died shortly be-fore during that same year. Monk never recorded My Ideal in the studio, and this is one out of just two existing readings of the song by the pianist.

This amazing 3-CD set presents a complete never before released live performance by the great John Coltrane recorded at Chicago’s Sutherland Hotel the peak of his creativity, in between his last sessions for Atlantic and his first for Impulse. Among the many highlights included here are: a spectacular 10-minute version of Bye Bye Blackbird on which Trane is the only soloist; readings of tunes rarely recorded by Trane, like Gershwin’s Summertime, Miles Davis’ Vierd Blues (this is the only live version of this tune by Coltrane), and his own Liberia, plus a 20-minute long Blue Train. This set also includes the earliest existing versions by the saxophonist of Greensleeves and Impressions, both of which precede the studio recordings.

Laurie Pepper founded Widow’s Taste Records in 2006 to “introduce truly unreleased and unheard Art to people who love him as well as to people who didn’t yet know him, so they can fill their lives with soulful beauty.” Since then, the label has been releasing prime Pepper recordings on an annual basis. Widow’s Taste’s latest offering, Unreleased Art Pepper Vol. VII, is a two-CD set recorded in November 1980 in Osaka, Japan.The Osaka session is a happy one, swinging and melodic. It reunites Art with pianist George Cables, and “Art’s mood was sunny throughout this trip,” recalls Laurie, “because he loved being on the road with George and loved working with him every night.”Other reasons for Art’s cheer (he mentions them onstage): The acclaim accorded his just-published book Straight Life, co-authored with Laurie, and the satisfaction he felt after completing his ballad album with strings, Winter Moon (Galaxy). Art’s inspired live performance of Winter Moon at this Osaka concert is, as far as Laurie knows, the only one extant and one good reason for releasing this material.

This release presents Grant Green’s complete LP Green Street (Blue Note BST84071), a wonderful trio set which constituted the guitarist’s third studio date as a leader. He is showcased here backed by Ben Tucker on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums. benny wateRswhen you’re smilingI decided of the date after hearing Benny and Roy playing together at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival. Ronnie Scott was in town, so I was able to grab Ron and Martin. Local piano hero Alex Shaw made upm the rhythm. The night before the event I got hold of Joe Temperley. A studio was available and without the least semblance of rehearsal the band launched into a freewheeling joyous set. This edition presents two complete original albums by the great Quincy Jones big band, both of which received a five-star rating in Down Beat shortly after they were recorded. This Is How I Feel About Jazz (ABC-Paramount ABC149, recorded in 1956) was Jones’ first LP as a leader. His previous recordings had been mostly as a trumpeter, arranger and/or conductor for other musicians’ orchestras, such as Lionel Hampton, George Wallington and Dizzy Gillespie. The Great Wide World of Quincy Jones (Mercury SR60221) presents the outstanding 1959 Quincy Jones orchestra. As a bonus, a live version of one of the tunes from the latter LP taped in 1961.
