Duke Ellington My People The Complete ShowDuke Ellington’s ‘My People’ opened in Chicago August 16, 1963. Duke Ellington did everything. He wrote the music, the words, directed it and did the orchestrations. There were not enough money involved to hire Duke Ellington’s orchestra. Instead they hired a 16 piece orches-tra with Jimmy Jones as the pianist. A recording of the show was made on August 20, 21 and 28 supervised by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington. This CD contains for the first time the complete show.

This new volume, taped on Ben Webster’s second night at Ronnie’s “Old Place” in Gerrard Street in December 1964, again benefits from the rare marriage of workable audio quality and musical excellence. The music here has lain unheard on the original tape reel for 48 years and has never been released in any format, making it a remarkable rediscovery.

Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate began playing together as far back as 1939. They met in the Count Basie orches-tra, a band they’d both remain with for nearly a decade. Although they would continue playing and recording together extensively well into the mid-seventies, the two albums contained here, Buck & Buddy (Swingville SVLP2017) and its sequel, Buck & Buddy Blow the Blues (Swingville SVLP2030) are unique for being their only quintet studio LPs. On both works they are backed by the outstanding pianist Sir Charles Thompson and bassist Gene Ramey, while the drum chair is alternately filled by Mousey Alexander and Gus Johnson. A different version of “Thou Swell”, recor-ded in 1957 by both Clayton and Tate, has been added as a bonus.

[16-27] O Amor, O Sorriso E A Flor (Odeon 3151, Brazil; aka Brazil’s Brilliant João Gilberto,Capitol T-10280, USA). Gilberto with orchestra arranged and conducted by Antonio Carlos Jobim, except track 21 (guitar solo arranged by João Gilberto). Brazil, March-April 1960.

[28-39] João Gilberto (Odeon 3202, Brazil; aka The Boss Of The Bossa Nova, Atlantic 8070, USA). Tracks 28-32: Gilberto with Walter Wanderley’s Group. Arranged and conducted by Walter Wanderley. Tracks 33-36: orchestra arranged and conducted by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Tracks 37-38: J. A. Jobim (p) plus rhythm section. Track 39: Gilberto accompanies himself on guitar. Brazil, March-September 1961.

This CD presents all of Gilberto’s master recordings as a leader from his early years, including his three initial LPs in their entirety, as well as rare tracks like his original versions of “Manhã de Carnaval”, “O Nosso Amor” and “A Felicidade”, originally issued on 7-inch discs. The latter two, which were first comprised into an edited-medley to fit the 7-inch format, appear here as originally recorded, in their complete form.

Born in 1931 and 80 years old at this writing, singer/song writer João Gilberto is a living legend of bossa nova. While Antonio Carlos Jobim set the standard for the creation of bossa nova in the mid-’50s (with songs like “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Desafinado”), it was Gilberto who brilliantly reimagined (and, arguably, defined) the genre.

SMALLS JAZZ CLUB was created in 1994 by the enigmatic Mitchell Borden. Borden, a former Navy Submariner, registered nurse, philosopher and jazz violinist, founded the club with an initiative to create an environment that was conducive to Jazz Music and its culture. Under his generous care, a culture of vibrant and newly energized young musicians claimed Smalls as their home base and began to develop their individuality in the music. This included such musicians as: Howard Allen, Peter Bernstein, Roy Hargrove, Brad Mehldau, Jeremy Pelt, among many others

CHet BakeRall Music guide

In the early 1970s Dutch jazz drummer and café owner Nick Vollebregt persuaded a producer for the radio network TROS to begin weekly broadcasts of performances from Vollebregt’s club. Though Vollebregt would pass away several years later, the broadcasts would continue, from his café and other venues in the Netherlands. The program featured many notable veteran jazz musicians who were touring Europe, and lasted until 2004. Now some of the performances, selected by original program co-producer Cees Schrama, are becoming available on CD, and they give us a chance to hear those jazz veterans in a 1970s and 80s context, playing in a relaxed but vital manner. Bill Evans, Art Blakey, and Chet Baker are featured on the program.
