Presents: Jay McTighe: Designing an Understanding-Based Curriculum based on Common Core Standards April 24, 2013 8:30 a.m. — 3:30 p.m. Bobak's Signature Events and Conference Center at Seven Bridges 6440 Double Eagle Drive Woodridge, Illinois 60517 IL ASCD bookstore on site. The new Common Core Standards provide a clear set of worthy educational outcomes. However, as noted in the documents, “standards are not curriculum.” Educators must use the standards as a basis for designing high-quality curricula and assessments to support impactful teaching for effective learning. In this session, we will examine a practical framework for transforming the Common Core Standards into a curriculum that emphasizes understanding and long-term transfer. Participants will learn specific strategies for “unpacking” the Standards into transfer goals, understandings, and essential questions. Ideas and examples of curriculum mapping and cornerstone assessments will be presented along with a collection of excellent, supportive websites. Note: Participants should bring copies of the Common Core standards as well as standards from their state, province or school district. This event is 15% interactive. Who should attend? Teachers, Administrators, & Teams Jay McTighe has co-authored 12 books, including the best-selling Understanding by Design® series with Grant Wiggins. He has written more than 30 articles and book chapters, and has published in leading journals, including Educational Leadership (ASCD) and The Developer (National Staff Development Council).
