【MT Supply & Demand Trends】Increased imports and exports of MT with China According to “Trade Statistics of Japan” compiled by Ministry of Finance, Japanese machine tool exports increased by 25.3% from the previous year to ¥960.64 billion in 2014, with the total volume of 123,406 units, resulting in the average unit

pr ice o f ¥7.78 m i l l ion , wh ich decreased by 520,000 yen from the previous year. Ch ina has been the biggest purchaser of Japanese machine tools at ¥224.33 billion, up 26.8 % from the previous year. Next came U.S.A, which was the previous champion, at ¥192.09 billion, up 8.3%. While the demand in U.S.A. was still strong, it

was surpassed by the recovering d e m a n d f r o m e l e c t r o n i c manu factur ing serv ice (EMS) companies in China. As in the previous year, Thailand was ranked third at ¥72.35 billion, up 15.6%, with the demand increased by the growth in equipment investment in automobile sector. Hong Kong and South Korea were ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, both of which showed steady demand. The sixth rank was occupied by Vietnam, which moved up from its previous rank of 10th, with the demand tripled from the previous year due to the increased spot orders from EMS companies. Japan’s overall machine tool imports in 2014 increased by 23.9 % from the previous year to ¥78.09 billion, indicating five consecutive year-to-year rise, with the total import volume of 141,398 units. The biggest import partner was Germany, which has held the top spot for four consecutive years, at ¥18.1 billion (up 8.0% from the previous year), with the volume of 1,004 units in 2014. Second place was taken by China at ¥17.7 billion, up 35.1%, with the volume of 106,280 units.

Domestic orders up 23.8% Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association (JMTBA) announced that overall orders for Japanese machine tools in 2014 stood at ¥1.50 trillion, up 35.1% from the previous year. The annual machine tool orders exceeded the one trillion yen mark for four consecutive years. Domestic machine tool demand increased by 23.8% to ¥496.3 billion, indicating a significant growth. Such a double-digit increase was found in

orders from all of the following sectors: general machinery sector at ¥199.9 billion, up 22.7% (from the previous year); automobile at ¥167.6 billion, up 35.7%; and electric & precision equipment at ¥44.5 billion, up 30.8%. Thus, the domestic demand was maintained at a favorable growth level because equipment investment ga ined momentum due to the government’s subsidy and tax system reform, stimulating not only the investment act iv it ies of la rge companies, but also the willingness of small and medium manufacturers to renew their existing equipment.

Production tops ¥1 trillion Accord ing t o “Yea rbook o f Machinery Statistics” compiled by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japanese metalworking machine tool production in 2014 stood at ¥1.176 trillion, up 32.8% from a year earlier, passing the one trillion yen mark again. On a monthly basis, the largest production value of mach ine tools was marked in September at ¥122.2 billion yen, while the smallest value was ¥76.1 billion in January. Every monthly production showed an increase on the year-to-year basis, indicating an excellent condition throughout the year. Production volume increased by 74.8 % from the previous year to 99,352 units. But the average unit price decreased by 3,690,000 yen from the year before to ¥11.84 million, partly because of growing needs for low price machines coupled with the recovery in demand from Chinese EMS companies.

I would like to extend my hearty congratulations on the grand opening of EMO 2015. Needless to say, Europe is the cradle of machine tools, where vast numbers of unique and excellent machines have been developed based on long-established technologies. While stimulated by the Italian, German, Swiss and other European technologies, Japanese machine tool industry has stepped up efforts for research and development of new technologies so far. In other words, our industry has grown , being inspired by European countries. At the same time, Europe is one of the biggest machine tool markets in the world, putting much emphasis on functions, performance and quality, so t he EMO Show i s a va lu able opportunity for Japanese machine tool builders to demonstrate their latest manufactur ing technolog ies to European users.

Th i s ye a r ’ s EMO Show i s anticipated to have great success partly because it is held concurrently with EXPO MILANO 2015. On this great occasion, Japanese exhibitors are happy to unveil optimum solutions for productivity improvement and cost reduction. They include not only multitasking and five-axis controlled machines , which indicate h igh d ema nd i n Eu r o p e , bu t a l s o unattended systems , intell igent technologies and many other higher value-added products and technologies than ever before. As seen in Industrie 4.0, which is now promoted in Germany, highly e f f i c i ent pr oduc t i on sy s t ems effectively utilizing IT are extensively studied in various parts of the world. At this show, I am looking forward to s e e i n g t h e l a t e s t E u r o p e a n

technologies and proposals for highly efficient production, such as IoT (Internet of Things).

In Japan, we will have our JIMTOF Tokyo 2016 at the Tokyo Big Sight in autumn of next year. Although our show will be slightly smaller than the 100,000 m2 of EMO Milano, we will have a new hall built by 2016. In addition, more construction is planned here for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. With the exhibit ion space of J IMTOF further expanded , the Japanese machine tool industry will work as one to introduce from Tokyo̶leading-edge manufacturing technologies with the most advanced machine tools̶to the world. We often use the word, “monozukuri” in Japan. It means the art of making things better than ever, through cont inuous ef for ts for “ka izen” (improvement). A l l EMO exhibitors a re our colleagues in support of spreading “monozukuri” throughout the world. By continuously competing with them or work ing ha rd together for improving various technologies , Japanese machine tool builders strongly wish to contribute to the further development of a global “monozukuri” with our European colleagues.

Therefore, I will be very happy to see EMO exhibitors and visitors at JIMTOF Tokyo 2016 experiencing Japan’ s vitality toward the new trend of “monozukuri.” I pray with all my heart for the great success of EMO 2015 and sincerely hope that this six-day show will be an enjoyable, interesting and fruitful experience for all visitors.
