Insurance Confusion may leave Jewellery theft victims underpaid (Stuff.co.nz 7/3/15) “Jewellery Valuers are at loggerheads over what Insurers are required to pay people whos antique watches and jewellery are lost or stolen. The Insurance Council’s Consumer Insurance Committee had tentatively agreed to tell Valuers they should be valuing antique items on the cost of a new time of similar materials and quality under popular “new for old” insurance policies. But the advice is being re-written after intervention by the Valuer responsible for valuing much of the country’s stolen and lost jewellery, who believes people get secondhand value even if their policy says new….” The JANZ Executive Committee noted that:

The Jewellery Valuers Society is awaiting a final decision from the Insurance Council Ombudsman regarding the agreed “definitions” for Valuers following last minute submissions from JVC.

When determining a valuation there are many factors that must be considered. If a Consumer or Jewellery Retailer has a complaint it should be directed to Jewellery

Valuers Society ( www.jvsnz.co.nz ) being the

body best qualified to handle these complaints.

NZQA approves Trade Certificates (Grant Harrison)

We are all delighted to have received notice from NZQA that the current Apprenticeship System will remain and be lodged as a separate individual qualification being Manufacturing Jewellery and Watch and ClockMaking on the NZ National Framework - Level 4. All Trades have traditionally sat at Level 4. Levels 1, 2 and perhaps 3 are gained at school before going on to do a Trade Certificate. Schools that have been receiving funding for teaching, Levels 5 and 6, will still do so but the new separate qualification distinguishes between the two giving a clear pathway for those who have gained their Trade Certificate

(Lvl 4) and wish to go on. “To be trade certified is still the benchmark for either ‘Manufacturing Jewellery’ or ‘Watch and Clockmaking’ and long may this continue!”

Experiential Marketing Tips continued…

sure about understanding your target market:

Who are your customers? What do they do? What age group are they? What are the peak shopping times? Where do your customers come from? What do they really want and, have you ever

asked them?

Now, take a look around your store and look through the eyes of your customers:

Is it fresh and clean? Is anything new and exciting or is it the same

old….? What do the walls, paintwork, cabinets look like? What makes your store physically different to

the jeweller store down the road? Window display - does it stop the consumer,

does it reflect whats in store, does it generate enough interest for the consumer to come in?

Does your store reflect your brand and market position? And, more importantly, do the people you have working in your store also reflect this?

Understanding these simple things and reflecting on them will pave the way for creating an outstanding experience in store. In our next TIPS column we will explore the power of music and the contribution it makes to a shopper’s experience and why it helps make the tills ring! In the meantime, happy and successful retailing.

Page 3: JANZ JEWELLERY POST - Retail...Myrtle’s mantra for this month: ‘Pump up the volume and, without exception, treat every day like a special occasion and every person like a VIP !

We may not have met, but I definitely know you!

I have been milling around the retail traps for years now, in and out of shops, industries and your local area.

Fair to say, I am familiar with your marketplace.

This week will be no different to last, and last week no

different to the week before. Why you might ask? Because this week you are going to do exactly what you

did last week, and last week you did exactly what you did the week before and on top of all of that times are so

tough! Yes, times are tough…

Are times that tough or is this what we believe, what we

tell our staff, even discuss with our customers and definitely our suppliers? Well honey, do something different this

week – go back to bed! Shut the shop! Fire your staff, tell your suppliers “no thanks” and put a notice up on your window telling your customers to go next door!

Sounds dramatic but, hey, you need to be careful what you wish for and what you believe. Quite possibly it is

translating into a very tough time for you.

We are climbing out of this recession - not into it!

It is time for a change, some fresh and innovative thinking, a bit of a spring in the old step and, for goodness sake,

some ‘positivity’!

So pick up your lemon lips, open the doors, turn up the

music and invite a new day into your store with retail passion and excitement and watch what happens.

I guarantee you will have the best day.

Sell well and enjoy!

Until next time… Myrtle

Myrtle’s mantra for this month:

‘Pump up the volume and, without exception,

treat every day like a special occasion and every person like a VIP !
