JANUARY 3, 2020
From the Principal’s Desk Happy 2020 to all Wayne Trail families! To start the new year, we are keeping the word “serving” in mind as students learn why it is important to help others. In brief, students will be engaging in one of the most impactful service events in their educational careers. As you can see in the flyer above, the meal pack benefits starving children all over the world. Our teachers have created lessons that tie the serve event into economics, geography, measurements, nutrition, cultures, and more over the next couple of weeks so that students receive background knowledge. Then, they will actively be able to make a difference when they pack meals on January 17 during the school day to ship to thousands of needy children! You will see on page 6 how your student can donate to help this cause. For more information about Feed My Starving Children, you can visit

Yearbook Contest Winners
Pictured above are the two yearbook contest winners. These are “preview” pictures as the full covers will be added to the yearbooks, which are typically available in March/April. The top picture will be the front cover and the one below that will be the back of the yearbook. We definitely have some talented artists in the building and we had close to 40 entries this year!

Collections to Support Education
We are always collecting pop and can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Last year we collected 41 pounds of tabs!
We are collecting used eyeglasses for recycling to third world countries. Last year, we donated 30 pairs of glasses to New Eyes for the Needy!
We collect the Box Tops for Education for our school to earn money for the extras including helping to pay for our author and/or camp fees for those that cannot afford it. Please send in any Box Tops asap. These are being phased out. General Mills is going to an app system that parents need to sign up for on their phone. We earn $0.10 for every cardboard or app submitted label. For more information check this website.

Wayne Trail Elementary Serve Day January 20, 2020
The Maumee City Schools vision statement is to Engage, Inspire, and Empower. Instilling these
attributes in students at a young age is vital in impacting students to grow and become valuable contributing members in the community and beyond. Since students do not have school on Monday, January 20, 2020 due to the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we thought to carry on his legacy, we would offer a voluntary time of service.
First Pres of Maumee has graciously offered to partner with us again this year for our 4th Annual Serve Day. They are once again willing to assist us in this event and they will have school approved adult volunteers at each location. Students will be dropped off by their parents at one of the two locations below by 9am (parents are welcome to stay and volunteer as well). Then students will stay at the site to serve until approximately 11am. At 11am, students will be picked up by Maumee School transportation (bus) and taken to First Pres of Maumee to eat a FREE lunch (pizza, chips and drink) and stay to play board games/watch a movie led by their staff until 3:30pm. At 3:30pm, students must be picked up at First Pres of Maumee by a designated adult (indicated on next page). If you needed to pick up your child before 3:30, you can come directly to the church (indicated on next page). If you would like to pack a lunch for your child, you can do that as an alternative to the pizza and chips (indicated on next page). Due to the number of adult volunteers for supervision, we are taking the first 30 students who return the attached permission slip to the office by Friday, January 10 . Options to serve include: Under-One-Roof Food Pantry (St. Paul’s Episcopal Church) https://stpaulsmaumee.org/789-2/
● 310 Elizabeth St, Maumee, OH 43537 ○ Students will be sorting, organizing and counting goods (some of which WT students will be donating
during our food drive). ○ Students will also be learning about the function and need of a local food pantry.
Sunshine Creating Community https://www.sunshine.org/
● Individuals with Disabilities facility ● 7223 Maumee Western Road Maumee, OH 43537
○ Students will be helping Sunshine prepare for Valentine’s Day for about an hour. ○ Students will be playing games, creating crafts or reading with residents for about one hour.
