Sure it’s been a great year for powder. But that doesn’t mean you can’t break out the spandex and skinny skis for a few laps through the gates.

Thanks to sponsor Dundee Wealth Management Silver Star is hosting the 32nd annual Over the Hill Downhill this February 4 to 10.

The first three days of the week features its wildly popular training camps, starting each day at 9:15 a.m.

Led by Gord Brown and his expert and experienced coaches, participants can expect to learn the finer points of conquering the race course.

“It’s not only a fun way to spend the week, you really can learn some great tips to improve your time,” said Brown. “It’s not just about speed, it’s about anticipat-ing what’s next, taking the right line and staying focused.”

The OTHDH course measures 1.5 kilometers over green and blue runs and camp participants can expect to get as many as five train-ing runs in during each day of train-ing.

Once training is complete, it’s off to qualifying runs on Feb. 8 and 9. With that out of the way, it’s off to race day. The OTHDH pits individu-als and teams of four against each other for the glory of being the fast-est down the mountain. Teams are entered in a category based on the combined team age ranging from 65 to 225-plus years. There is no longer a requirement to have one

team member over 35 but they must include at least one female. Team registration is $420 and includes awards banquet, souvenir item, door prizes, the Don Weixl slide show, and a chance to win one of two day-trips for four with KingFisher HeliSkiing.

“There’s so much more to the

Over the Hill than the race,” said Brown. “It’s a chance for friends to come together. There’s so much camaraderie between all the partic-ipants. It’s a great event.”

In addition, after the completion of the OTHDH, there is a chance for the more serious racers to compete in the Canadian Masters DH Championships and gain some valuable Masters points.

Ask any skier. The only thing more enjoyable than a cold beverage after a powder day on the slopes might be that moment when you unbuckle your ski boots. Walk through Long John’s shortly after the lifts close and you’ll see for yourself. First you hear the clips snap back, then you see that look of relief that only another skier will under-stand.

But Ski Dazzle has a plan to make that look disappear from the post-ski ritual. As one of the premier boot fitting shops in the Okanagan, Ski Dazzle features Fischer’s VACUUM FIT technology. Fisher uses a concept that allows the boot to fit exactly to the individ-ual requirements, regardless of each person’s skiing disciplines. The ski shop is so confident in the technology, they guarantee customer satisfaction.

“The Fischer system creates the perfect boot for skiers who are looking for the ultimate in performance,” said Kyle de Hrussoczy-Wirth, manager of Ski Dazzle. “It’s incredible how comfortable your boots are with this system.”

The technology works when they heat up the shell to 80 degrees Celsius in the specially designed oven. Your foot is then inserted into a preheated shell with the boot liner. Then a cooling pad and compres-sion pad adjust the standing position while you are on the vacuum fit station. This allows Ski Dazzle to adjust the entire boot using the anat-omy of the foot while cool air molds the boot to a perfect fit.

It’s an important lesson in life: Bigger isn’t always better.That point is especially true as Silver Star has been voted the number

one ski resort and best family resort in the Okanagan Valley thanks to the readers of Okanagan Life Magazine.

“We can’t thank our community enough. Everyone knows that locals are the best source of information on where to go and these awards demonstrate the passion our visitors have for Silver Star,” says general manager Michael Sherwood. “Our team works really hard to ensure an exceptional guest experience – and this recognizes their continued efforts to provide the best service on snow.”

Sherwood acknowledges there is some competition among the Okanagan ski resorts. Silver Star has recently split its marketing depart-ment from Big White, making the competition a little more serious. But having the faith of the residents of the Okanagan is very satisfying, says Sherwood. He said the goal is to keep them that way.

“We introduced our all-inclusive pass this year and our customers love the options. Whether it’s skiing and Tube Town or hitting the cross country trails, the value is in the ticket, for sure,” he said.

Each year, B.C. residents from Salmon Arm to Osoyoos, weigh in on who will make the Best of the Okanagan awards. Local and independent-ly owned, Okanagan Life magazine has been telling the stories of the Valley’s people and businesses for 25 years. The November-December issue features Silver Star Mountain Resort on its cover.

Okanagan Life magazine publisher Paul Byrne says Silver Star says the results are testament to its loyal customer base.

“A strong customer referral is so important to the ongoing successes

of a business,” says Okanagan Life publisher Paul Byrne. “I’ve seen many businesses take pride in having customers vote them best-in-class and really it’s a mark of their excellence.”

The resort, a popular destination in the summer with its lift-accessed moun-tain bike trails, was also voted Best Place for an Adrenaline Rush. Silver Star summer business manager Ian Galbraith says the award reinforces the reputation of one of B.C.’s best mountain bike parks.

“That we have such amazing products, both summer and winter, is what resonates most with me. And to have them just 20 minutes from Vernon is even better,” says Galbraith.

The great thing about skiing and riding at Silver Star is that even during mediocre snow years, the conditions are still better here than they are at a lot of other resorts on the planet. It’s an impressive statement to be able to say that we don’t have any snow making guns at the resort…they’ve never been needed. It’s also impressive that between our summer grooming and the skills of our snow cat drivers that most of the mountain can open for the season with 60-80 cm of snow. Now this is where the real snow connoisseurs come in and talk about the qual-ity of the snow that falls from the sky here in the Okanagan. Light and fluffy powder that makes for incredible days on the board(s) but also stays soft enough to let you carve a sweet arc days after it’s been groomed multiple times. All of these little things matter, they would matter a lot if we were in the middle of a mediocre winter. The 2012 / 13 season at Silver Star has been anything but... Consistent dumps of snow since opening day have been putting smiles on faces and enlisting cheers of delight from skiers and board-ers all winter long. As of the day this article was writ-ten there had been 433 cm of snow fall from the sky at Silver Star and the settled alpine base was sitting at 203 cm. More important than the ‘total’ amount of snow is the timing of those snowfalls. An extra 20cms of fresh for ‘opening day in Putnam’… OK!! How about a bunch of fresh snow just before the Christmas holidays…thank you very much. Another 27 cm for everyone to wake up to on a Wednesday morning and locals invoke the ’20 cm rule’ and call in sick or close up shop…that’ll do! These instances and many more could be mentioned about this season. It’s not all just about watching the snow pile up, it’s about the experiences it creates for all those who come out to play. It’s mid-winter, the mountain is oozing with snow, there’s sure to be more fall from the sky, so make sure you are ready to get out here and enjoy the best that Silver Star has to offer the next time it snows.

Not that we want winter to come to an end early, but there are some people around here that just can’t wait to get their mountain bike out and on the trails. In fact, the Silver Star Bike Park and SE Racing & Promotions are excited to announce the creation of BC’s first Cycling BC sanctioned snow race – aptly named Silver Star FrostBIKE. March 2 and 3 will witness downhill mountain bikers from around the province descending on the ski resort to test their race skills on snow. The weekend snow race is also the official kickoff party for the BC Cup Mountain Bike series that will run from May to September and visit bike parks and DH tracks around the province.

“We are really looking forward to bringing a snow DH race to the resort to promote the coming BC Champs DH race (July 27/28) as well as focus the attention on the summer season product at the resort. We are extremely proud of what we have built here at Silver Star and just because the bike trails are buried in snow doesn’t

mean we are going to keep that enthusiasm hidden” commented Silver Star General Manager Michael Sherwood.
