There’s somethingincurably hopeful andhappy about Mount
Righteous.The indie-pop nine-piece
unabashedly borrows jingle-worthy hooks, stirs them intojutting rhythms and isn’t toocool for the marching band.(Mount Righteous comescomplete with marching bassdrum, and it also offersdefinitive proof that the tubacan be cool.)
The band — based inGrapevine but with ties toDenton — plays RubberGloves Rehearsal Studios onFriday night, headlining ashow put together byGutterth Live.
Mount Righteous’ debut,When the Music Starts, came
out in 2008, followed by anEP (Open Your Mouth).
For the band’s self-titled2010 full-length, MountRighteous worked with JohnCongleton, one of theregion’s sought-after produc-ers. Mount Righteous has awhen-carnivals-go-wild sortof sound — a lot of carefullyplotted dissonance, perkyvocals and loads of toyinstrument-sounding effects. There’s a punk ethos to theself-titled second album, anda riskier approach to theircore sound altogether.
The bottom line is thatMount Righteous seems tobe conceived and born torock the house show or whipfestival crowds into a full-onfrolic, complete with bubble-blowing and beach-ball
bouncing in the crowd. Theydon’t make the sort of musicthat you put on to cook —unless you’ve got a kid’sbirthday barbecue in theworks.
Sounds like: PolyphonicSpree let loose in a highschool band hall — minusthe stage-y indie precious-ness the Spree does so well.
They’re with the band:Allison Wenban, Alex Poulos,Austin Bird, Cory Graves,Lauren Wadsworth, KendallAnne Kendall, Matt Fjord-bak, Joey Kendall and ZMarxen.
Details: Mount Righteous,New Science Projects, SpookyFolk and Two Knights playFriday at Rubber Gloves, 411E. Sycamore St. Doors openat 9 p.m. Cover is $5 for ages21 and older; anyone youngerthan 21 pays $7.

You know how your heartrate spikes when thecontestants on Top Chef
hustle through the “quick fire”challenge? You know, that con-test where cooks have to createa tasty dish in 30 minutes witha surprise ingredient and a lim-ited pantry?
Take that concept and super-impose it onto a musical.(Imagine Ryan Murphy visit-ing the set of Glee with anassignment to cast, writemusic, rehearse and performan episode in 24 hours.)
That’s One Night Stand:Creating a Play in a Day in anutshell. Multiplied by four.
Denton theater fans canwatch the process — with per-formers Rachel Dratch (Satur-

NCM Fathom Events, Over-night Musicals and the Broad-way League will bring One
Night Stand to 450 moviehouses Wednesday. The broad-cast is one part sketch comedyby high-caliber vets and onepart behind-the-scenes docu-mentary.
Four teams of composers, writers, directors and actorsuse props to inspire the musi-
cals: a zoot suit worn by Kindon a children’s show in the1970s inspires the “Islands”musical; a phobia pop-up bookis the premise for “Multi-phobia,” and an ’80s promdress prop is used in “Dr.Williams,” featuring Jackson,Ferguson and Roger Bart
(Revenge). Dratch brings hercomedic timing to the fourthmusical, “Rachel Said Sorry.”

OPENING FRIDAYHansel and Gretel: Witch HuntersThe fairy-tale siblings (Jeremy
Renner and Gemma Arterton) are all
grown-up and bagging crones for a
living. Rated R, 88 minutes. — The
Associated Press
The Impossible Naomi Watts and
Ewan McGregor star in director J.A.
Bayona’s film about a family caught
in the 2004 tsunami that devastated
Southeast Asia. Rated PG-13, 107
minutes.
Movie 43 Director-producer Peter
Farrelly’s movie of interconnected
sketch-comedy shorts, starring a
crew of A-listers including Halle
Berry, Richard Gere, Johnny Knoxville,
Emma Stone, Uma Thurman and
loads more. Rated R, 97 minutes.
Parker Professional thief Parker
(Jason Statham) teams up with an
unlikely partner (Jennifer Lopez) in
pursuit of revenge. Based on the nov-
els by Donald E. Westlake. Rated R,
118 minutes.
NOW PLAYINGBroken City () The mayor of
New York City (Russell Crowe) hires
Billy (Mark Wahlberg), a former New
York police detective, to investigate
whether his wife (Catherine Zeta-
Jones) is having an affair. But Billy’s
digging leads to further revelations
involving the mayor’s rival (Barry
Pepper), the rival’s campaign manag-
er (Kyle Chandler), the police com-
missioner (Jeffrey Wright) and some
wealthy, well-connected land devel-
opers. Everything is simultaneously
too complicated and overly spelled
out. Director Allen Hughes' film is a
forgettable piece of pulp. Rated R,
108 minutes. — AP
Django Unchained (1/2) In
Quentin Tarantino’s new tale of
wickedly savage retribution, a black
man (Jamie Foxx) gets to rewrite
Deep South history by becoming a
bounty hunter on a killing spree of
white slave owners and overseers
just before the Civil War. It’s
Tarantino at his most puerile and
least inventive, with the premise
offering little more than cold, nasty
revenge and barrels of squishing,
squirting blood. Performances by
Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph
Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson make
the film intermittently entertaining.
Rated R, 165 minutes. — AP
Gangster Squad () This pulpy,
violent tale of cops and mobsters in
1949 Los Angeles rides an uncom-
fortable line between outlandishness
and outright parody, and it’s difficult
to tell which is director Ruben
Fleischer’s intention. While the film
wallows in period detail and has
some sporadic moments of amusing
banter, it’s mostly flashy, empty and
cacophonous, and it woefully wastes
a strong cast led by Josh Brolin, Ryan
Gosling and Emma Stone in barely
developed, one-note roles. With a
cartoony Sean Penn as mob king
Mickey Cohen and Brolin as a police
sergeant tasked with putting togeth-
er a secret team to take down
Cohen’s empire. Rated R, 113 min-
utes. — AP

Freeman as young Bilbo Baggins.
Bilbo joins an army of dwarfs and
Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) for
a long march and multiple battles
to prove his bravery. As usual,
Jackson delivers a technically
remarkable film, filled with memo-
rable costumes and sets. Rated PG-
13, 166 minutes. — Boo Allen
Jack Reacher () Clever,
well-crafted and darkly humorous,
Jack Reacher features one of those
effortless performances from Tom
Cruise that remind us that he is
indeed a movie star. OK, so maybe
Cruise doesn’t exactly resemble
the Reacher of British novelist Lee
Child’s books, but Christopher
McQuarrie’s film moves so fluidly
and with such confidence, it’ll suck
you in from the start. Besides being
a mind teaser, Jack Reacher offers
the muscular thrills of a ‘70s action
flick, including fight scenes and a
thrilling, prolonged car chase
through the streets of downtown
Pittsburgh. Rated PG-13, 130 min-
utes. — AP
The Last Stand (1/2) It’s the
Arnold Schwarzenegger movie you
didn’t even realize you wanted to
see. His return to the screen — and
Korean director Kim Jee-woon’s
American filmmaking debut — is
essentially an amped-up version of
Rio Bravo, with some Jackass-style
high jinks courtesy of Johnny
Knoxville himself. A Mexican drug
kingpin (Eduardo Noriega) daringly
escapes federal custody and heads
for a quiet Arizona border town
where Schwarzenegger, as the
sheriff, rounds up a posse of mis-
fits to stop him. Rated R, 107 min-
utes. — AP
Les Miserables () Tom
Hooper (The King’s Speech) direct-
ed this big, brassy version of the
stage musical with Hugh Jackman
playing Jean Valjean, the wanted
man followed and persecuted by
the obsessive Inspector Javert
(Russell Crowe). The film’s produc-
tion values make the film visually
engaging while the music never
stops. With Anne Hathaway,
Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham
Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Rated PG-13, 157 minutes. — B.A.
Life of Pi (1/2) Ang Lee directs
from Yann Martel’s allegorical
novel about a boy, Pi Patel (Suraj
Sharma), who travels with his fami-
ly from India to Canada. A ship-
wreck lands him in a small boat
with a group of zoo animals, all
quickly reduced to a tiger. Man and
beast coexist, supposedly giving
Zen-like life lessons to the boy,
who grows into a man (Irrfan Khan)
who tells the story in flashback.
Moderately entertaining pseudo-
spiritual diversion with elaborate
but not particularly awe-inspiring
special effects. Rated PG, 127 min-
utes. — B.A.
Lincoln () This is more a
wonky, nuts-and-bolts lesson about
the way political machinery oper-
ates than a sweeping historical
epic that tries to encapsulate the
entirety of the revered 16th presi-
dent’s life. That was a smart move
on the part of Steven Spielberg and
Pulitzer-winning screenwriter Tony
Kushner. Talky and intimate but
also surprisingly funny, Lincoln
focuses on the final four months of
Abraham Lincoln’s life, and Daniel
Day-Lewis inhabits the role fully.
With Tommy Lee Jones, James
Spader, John Hawkes and David
Strathairn. Rated PG-13, 150 min-
utes. — AP
Mama Jessica Chastain plays a
woman caring for two traumatized
sisters who may be haunted by an
evil force. Rated PG-13, 100 min-
utes. — AP
Parental Guidance There’s some-
thing touching about how hard Billy
Crystal and Bette Midler hustle to
peddle the threadbare material that
makes Parental Guidance a perfect-
ly tolerable, if uninspired, moviego-
ing experience. Artie (Crystal) and
his wife, Diane (Midler), have been
recruited to baby-sit their daughter
Alice’s (Marisa Tomei) three kids.
Rated PG, 104 minutes. — The
Hollywood Reporter
Silver Linings Playbook ()
Writer-director David O. Russell
takes Matthew Quick’s novel about
a man (Bradley Cooper) with bipo-
lar disorder who returns from a
mental facility to live with his dot-
ing mother (Jacki Weaver) and his
Philadelphia Eagles-obsessed
father (Robert DeNiro). Add anoth-
er unstable, seemingly unsuited
love interest (Jennifer Lawrence)
and the results are abrasive histri-
onics, much yelling and consistent
inconsistency. Rated R, 122 min-
utes. — B.A.
Skyfall (1/2) Daniel Craig
returns as James Bond in the 23rd
film based on 007’s exploits.
Britain’s MI6 comes under attack,
with M (Judi Dench) as the chief
target. Bond finds and brings back
the villain (Javier Bardem), but that
just sets the stage for further
action and adventure. Between the
action sequences, director Sam
Mendes takes time to build a per-
sonal drama that distinguishes this
Bond film from its predecessors.
Rated PG-13, 143 minutes. — B.A.
This Is 40 (1/2) Theoretically,
this moderately funny domestic
comedy follows two characters,
Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie
Mann), a few years after their
appearance in writer-director Judd
Apatow’s Knocked Up. Here,
Apatow seems to be revealing all,
milking his own life for its crotch
gags and bathroom humor as the
couple approach their 40th birth-
days. Apatow’s and Mann’s two
daughters even appear as Pete and
Debbie’s offspring. Rated R, 134
minutes. — B.A.
Zero Dark Thirty () Kathryn
Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) directed
this movie concerned with the
years-long process behind finding
and then executing Osama bin
Laden. Jessica Chastain stars as
the dedicated CIA agent who
doggedly continued on a long and
tedious journey to piece together
the clues that will lead to the film’s
final, well-executed assassination
sequence. With an excellent sup-
porting cast. Rated R, 157 minutes.

In 2008, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggarturned their huge brood into a spectacleof sorts on the reality television series 19Kids and Counting.
It wasn’t so long ago that another real-lifefamily had almost more children than theycould count on two hands. Denton Commu-nity Theatre brings that popular and well-
loved big family to the stage in Cheaper by theDozen, opening on Friday.
The comedy is based on the real-lifeGilbreth brood of New Jersey in the 1920s.

director of the American Asso-ciation of Community Theatre, returns to direct what shedescribes as “a memory piece.”
“It really is written that way,”Crawford said. “At the top ofevery scene, there are two of thegrown Gilbreth children re-membering what we’re aboutto see.”
Much of the comedy in theplay is found in parents Frankand Lillian Gilbreth applyingphilosophies of their livelihood— time study and efficiency —onto their family life.
And when Frank Sr. isn’tcoaching his children to do themost mundane things (taking abath or unpacking parcels) asefficiently as possible, the momand dad are grappling withrearing a family in rapidlychanging times. Frank wantshis oldest daughter, 16-year-oldAnne, to get through her teenyears without getting her hairbobbed, wearing lipstick orperfume.
Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr.and his sister, Ernestine Gil-breth Carey, wrote the bookCheaper by the Dozen, whichinspired a number of stage andfilm adaptations. Clifton Webband Myrna Loy played thepatriarch and matriarch (FrankSr. and Lillian) of the sprawlingGilbreth clan in the 1950 filmversion. Steve Martin and
Bonnie Hunt took on theparental roles in an updatedversion from 2003 and itssequel.
Crawford said auditionsbrought about 50 people intothe Campus Theatre for audi-tions, “particularly teenagegirls,” she said.
In the play, the audience seesnine of the Gilbreth children. There’s a baby “upstairs,” Craw-ford said, who isn’t seen by theaudience. The youngest actoronstage is 6.
Crawford said she guided theperformers through the ensem-ble piece, with Pat Watson inthe role of Frank Sr. andSusanne Coffey as Lillian. Atthe heart of the play, the direc-tor said, is the simple value offamily.
“They have a happy family,”Crawford said. “The children areall growing up, going throughthe things all children gothrough as they grow up. Theythink they have the strictestfather in town, but there is a lotof love. It’s a happy family.”
Because she approached theplay as a memory piece,Crawford said the set designsuggests a two-story home —but the audience isn’t meant tosee “every single wall.”
She credits costume designerNelda Evarts for doing rafts ofresearch on the play, the era thefamily lived in and the clothesthey would have worn.
The 1920s were more for-mal. Men wore three-piece
suits, women wore fitted skirts, long sleeves and chaste neck-lines. At the same time, hem-lines were creeping upward, women were smoking andcropping their hair, and familysize was clipped thanks togrowing cities and industry.
“I enjoy working at DentonCommunity Theatre,” Crawfordsaid. “I’ve been real pleasedwith the talent that we have.Even the younger ones pickedup on the meaning of the linesearly on. It’s been a good expe-rience.”
