Brain Balance plus our daughter equals AWESOME!! Our daughter Malia was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of eight and has struggled with school

from day one. We placed her on several types of ADHD medicine, only to see her personality change. She went from a happy girl to being quiet and even passive aggressive at times. We didn’t know how to help her. Then

one day, we saw a commercial on TV about Brain Balance and thought we would give it a try. After being assessed, Malia was recommended for a

six month program. Before half way through her program, we could already see changes in her. It was amazing! She was happy, laughing, more confident and

showing interest in activities again. The true testimony came when school started. We received the most incredible email from one of her teachers, boasting on how well Malia was doing in school this year. Now as Malia approaches the end of her program, it comes with mixed emotions. We are happy that she has completed her segment and look forward to her future, but sad that she will no longer be visiting the center on a regular basis. She has greatly enjoyed her time with the staff and she can see, herself how much she has changed and grown over these past few months. Our experience with Brain Balance has been remarkable and I would highly recommend Brain Balance to any parent struggling with their child, socially or academically.

There is no use of crying over spilled milk! Here at Peanut Butter & Jelly Childcare & Preschool everything we do is a learning experience. From learning how to wave hi, to spelling names, with two teachers in each class daily we are able to meet the needs of each child in the class. We do a lot of activities to encourage the involvement of everyone parent, child, and teacher. Examples are we have a haunted house for Halloween, Christmas Programs, Parent Appreciation, field trips and fundraisers every year. Our staff takes time out every week to plan our lessons according to the ages and needs of the children in care based on a weekly theme. The staff follows all state regulations for licensing. This includes background checks, drug test, CPR/First Aid, and have or working on a Childcare Credential. The center itself is always working to meet and exceed health and safety guidelines. Since communication

is a very important part of raising a child we have an online program that’s used to communicate with parents about the child’s day, needs and any events going on in the center. Our building is filled with art work and crafts the children have done so that the children and parents can be proud of what they have done. Being on the CACFP (food program) we provide healthy meals daily. We are open from 5:30am till 10pm 5 days a week. Proving care for ages 6 weeks old to 6 years of age. You can rest assured your child will be cared for with the utmost kindness, love, and respect. A cup of spilled milk is the least of our concerns.

How do you as a parent help your children to set goals?

I ask this because you're certainly active in structuring their life to accomplish goals that include sports, spelling bees, chores, and work activities like babysitting or part-time work. But have you ever spent time with your children asking them what they would like to accomplish in their life and then brainstorming how to get the job done?

There are several fun exercises that you can do at dinner time, or on the way to sports activities that will help you to get your children thinking about goals.

Pick A Word

The first exercise is called “Pick A Word” and it involves having your child pick a word that they would like to implement into their life for 2016. If your child wants to be a better soccer player the word might be “practice.” If your child wants to be a better student the word might be “studious,” or if your child wants to have more friends to the word might be “kindness.”

Spend some time writing the words on big pieces of paper or drawing symbols and images that represent his word. Ask your children where can they put the word so that they'll see it regularly to remind them to work on their goal.

Do regular check-in's with your child to find out how they are doing with the word “practice” or “studious” or “kindness” and help to brainstorm new ways that they can play out this word.

Brainstorm Goals

Another fun exercise is to sit down at the kitchen table with a piece of paper and a pencil and everybody in the family writes as

many goals as they can think of that they would like to accomplish in their lifetime. Tell them they have 8 minutes to come up with ideas.

You will need to do this exercise ahead of time and read it to your children to role model what this exercise looks like. This list might look like: I want to travel all over the world, I want to find a church, I want to donate time to the neighborhood nursing home, I want to go camping, I want to learn how to hip-hop, I want a new car, I want to learn how to play guitar, I want to meet the president, I want to raise more money for our church.

You get the jest, the important thing is to dream big and have lots of goals to help your family see that there are many possibilities in life but first you have to write down your goals to make them happen!

After you have read your goals to your family, you give them 8 minutes to come up with their goals and you inspire them by asking them to write down at least 25 of them. If you have small children it may be necessary to be their secretary and write down their goals for them.

Then everybody is asked to read their goals or to have a representative read their list for them. The next task is to have them circle the goal they would most like to accomplish in 2016. The family is encouraged to talk about how they can help each other accomplish the goal. This really helps a family to feel solidarity and work together to create a positive experience for each other. Goals can lead to amazing things….teach your children to have fun with them!

At j&R Tutoring Academy we have had one student test at grade level in reading comprehension! Since we pull from five different school districts with different reading programs, there is no way to determine what the underlying problems may be. Children often score high on our diagnostic in sight words and phonics, but well below grade level in comprehension. Current reading programs emphasize the ability to read passages without making mistakes. As a result, the children focus on being able to sound out/read the correct words.The energy taken for this may not leave time to absorb the written words themselves. The student is reading words, but not comprehending. Comprehension is a higher level skill. It must be developed. That development takes time.

This past January we were literally deluged with parents who suddenly realized that their third grader may not be equipped to pass iRead. As a result, we developed a special iRead preparation program. Our program focuses on the same reading and comprehension skills and applications the test covers. Unfortunately parents tend not to worry about iRead until after the first of the year. At that point there is about three months until iRead. Although that may seem like a long time, in tutoring time it is about 24 hours. Is that enough time to fill in the gaps?By enrolling your third grader in our special iRead Prep program, you will provide him or her with the tools necessary to fly through iRead! Reading is the foundation of all learning, and that foundation is built in the early elementary years. Make it a strong one!
