W hat a wonderful time of year it is at Solivita during the holidays! Illuminating the community, there was a grand

spectacle of lights during the House Lighting Contest. Our residents twinkled on all new levels showing their festive flair for the whole neighborhood’s viewing pleasure. A community with more than 150 resident-driven clubs, this month’s Solivita Club Expo is a fantastic meet and greet event that brings all of these wonderful groups together in one room. Great for established and new residents alike, this is the perfect opportunity to find your niche!

Solivita is at it again adding several new illustrious industry awards to the shelf! With a successful Spring Parade of Homes under our belt, the Fall Parade of Homes was equally rewarding as two more Solivita model home designs received first place recognition. I am also thrilled to say that Solivita model homes

Siena and Calabria were announced as finalist for the National Association of Home Builders 50+ Housing Awards. Adjacent to the new home sales center, the new model park features each of these wonderful designs on parade seven days a week! With so much excitement stirring about our community, make sure to stop by the new home sales center today for the latest Solivita news!

A fresh start, the new year sparks great ideas, innovation, and opportunities for progress! A stunning natural community complemented by one-of-a-kind residents, the Solivita future looks bright with good fortune and I look forward to being a part of this golden journey!

[ Department Articles ]Lifestyles would once again like to thank all the volunteers, visitors, and staff who

donated their time to helping us accomplish such an incredibly fun feat. On Sunday, November 9th, Solivita officially became the world record holder for the World’s Longest Ice Cream Dessert at 1,772 feet and 2 inches thanks to the dedication provided by many. We would not have been able to succeed in this endeavor without you all and the generous sponsors and vendors who participated throughout the Salute Our Veterans Weekend. Through sponsors, vendors, ice cream sales, show sales, golfers, runners/walkers, and generosity from many, Solivita was able to raise over $24,000 for veterans! Oh the things we can do when we work together!

ROOM RESERVATIONS - CHANGED INFORMATION

Solivita club facilities can be scheduled no more than one year in advance from the month the reservation is being requested. For example, you can book any day in January 2016 on any day in January 2015. You do not have to wait, for example, until January 15, 2015 to reserve a room for January 15, 2016.

The day the room calendars open is on the second business day of the month in the Lifestyles Office. For example, in January 2015 the room calendars open on January 6th (the second business day of the month) and you may book any day in January 2016.

On the day the room calendars are opened, a Lifestyles Team Member will begin to hand out numbers to people lined up outside the Lifestyles Office beginning at 8:30am (new time and location of giving tickets). When the Lifestyles Office opens at 9am, reservations are accepted in order of the numbers given. The Lifestyles Team will not accept reservations slipped under the door, emailed, or any other delivery method before the numbers are called at 9am and until all numbers have been served.

WALK/RUN FOR A CURE The 7th Annual Solivita Walk/Run for a Cure is different from many other walk/run events you may have attended. This is not a race! You can walk two miles (or any shorter distance you are comfortable with) or you can run/jog three miles at your own pace. Water will be provided for all participants along the course and there will also be snacks at the finish line.

The event, which is sponsored and organized by the Fitness & Wellness Department, the Cancer Support Group, and Tony (8-time cancer survivor) and Narda (3-time cancer survivor) Handler, is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. All contributions (minimum of a $15 donation) go directly to helping fund the research and programs needed to find a cure for cancer.

This community-supported event has been so successful in past years because of the gathering of friends, neighbors, and supporters who want to help in the fight against cancer. Last year, many clubs and social groups took part in the event (300 total participants), so we encourage you to round up your friends and neighbors to join the fun and help us beat last year’s record!

To participate in the event, please fill out a registration form (available on the following page, at the Concierge Desk in the Administration Building in The Village, at The Palms, and at the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center). T-shirts will be given to everyone who registers by Friday, January 30th. For more information or questions, call Tony or Narda at 863-427-4345.

The holiday season is winding down now and I sincerely hope you and your family had a great one! As for me, I loved decking the halls; I had

lots of fun fa la la la laing (might have done a little too much of that) and drove my husband totally NUTS! There is just one thing I feel I should share with you before we begin our adventures - I am really upset with Santa. Yet another year has gone by and he did not bring me my most requested present. I’m sure you know the one I am speaking of. Yep, I DID NOT get Pierce Brosnan for Christmas. I am beginning to get just a L-I-T-T-L-E put out with Santa, I must say. Of course, it couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that I might have been a teeny weeny bit naughty last year! Oh well, I’ll just have to try again next Christmas.

Just in case you’re like me and can’t get enough of the holidays, I have one more holiday adventure for you before you settle in for the New Year. The St. Augustine Nights of Lights would be a great weekend trip. This is a popular holiday season citywide event featuring more than three million lights. The event runs until February 1st. Nights of Lights is inspired by the tradition

of marking the holiday season with a single white candle burning in a window at each home during the years when St. Augustine served as the capital of Spanish La Florida.

Today, Nights of Lights continues that tradition in grand style. Many historic landmarks and locations

are beautifully illuminated during the Nights of Lights including St. Augustine’s historic district. You can also take the trolley to see the sights with stops along the way at all of the popular venues. When we were there they gave us 3D glasses and when you looked at the streetlights you saw SANTA! I really loved that and still have those glasses. If you see me wondering around the community with weird glasses on looking up at the streetlights, you’ll know I’m hoping to see Santa’s face there.

(Now, if I could just get a pair of those where I could look at the streetlights and see Pierce Brosnan’s face!) For more information, please call 904-829-1711 or visit www.nightsoflights.com.

Okay, no more holiday events - I promise! I just had to squeeze that one in. Now for a complete change of pace, we’re off to the Lakeland PigFest (oink, oink)! This is a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event. Admission is free but you will need cash for food. You’ll want to stop by one of the Pigs Bucks booths (try to say that three times fast) located near all entrances and exchange your cash for Pig Bucks, the official currency of the Lakeland PigFest.

There will be over 150 competition barbecue teams for a weekend of good eatin’, live music, and even a kid’s play area. The event will be open to the public from 3pm to 10pm on Friday, January 30th and from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, January 31st. For more information, please call 863-450-3322 or visit www.lakelandpigfest.net.

Habitat for Humanity of East Polk County is hosting their 2nd Annual Chili in the Park event at Lake Eva Park in Haines City. This internationally sanctioned chili competition is expected to bring close to 50 chili chefs from across the US to Polk County. International Chili Society contestants and amateur contestants compete for prizes with their smoking chili recipes. Other foods along with drinks will also be available for purchase. There will be live entertainment and activities for the entire family. Event Date: Saturday, January 10th. Event Location: 555 Ledwith Avenue. For more information, please call 863-292-2256 or visit www.chiliinthepark.com.

Happy New Year and may you keep all of your New Year’s resolutions. (I am so proud, last year mine lasted about 5 minutes into the New Year! I’m going for a new record this year….6 MINUTES!)

Committee Roundup

Wellness CommitteeThe Wellness Committee recently completed a tour of RSF. Several areas were noted that needed further attention. Some issues at The Palms were also discussed and will be addressed soon. A sign will be added at both facilities about the Fitness Assessment that is available free of charge to all residents. Check the SolivitaLive.com fitness webpage for fitness class descriptions, lists of equipment available for check out, and information on monthly events. The Wellness Committee has received, and will look into, several suggestions for future wellness lectures. Elizabeth Deckard, Fitness Director, gave follow up reports on the Solivita Health Fair and the Salute Our Veterans Weekend. Both were huge successes! Meeting dates were established for 2015. The next meeting will be held at The Palms.

Landscape CommitteeThe Landscape Committee meeting was held on November 24th. Mainscape reported that mulching in The Village and common areas was to be completed by the end of November. Palms in the common areas have been trimmed in accordance with the wishes of the committee to represent a 10-2 look. Trimming of the hardwood trees and the residents' palms will continue on schedule. Mulching of the home sites will begin in January. The 2-week schedule of mowing will continue and crews that aren't doing lawn work are doing other jobs such as removing excess moss from ornamentals. Customer Service Requests are in a manageable state and Mainscape hopes to continue that improvement through 2015.

Happy New Year! I would like to extend a warm welcome to the new and returning Stonegate Golf Club members. This year’s benefit package was a huge success for all members; please contact the pro-shop for scheduling

your complimentary round of golf at one of the facilities listed in your packet. Stonegate Golf Club will be hosting the following events:

• Member/Member Championship: January 16th-17th• Men’s Member/Guest: February 26th-28th• Ladies’ Member/Guest: April 9th-11th• Couples Club Championship: November 20th-21st• Club Championship: December 4th-5th

Stonegate Golf Club will be hosting numerous club demo days to see the newest technology from different manufacturers. The courses are in great shape at this time. Please remember that all players need to be aware of golf etiquette, which includes policing trash, repairing divots, removing broken tees, raking bunkers, as well as avoiding driving the cars too close to the greens. The course maintenance staff will always maintain the courses at the highest level, but sometimes they need help from the players as well. I welcome all members, residents, and their guests to come out and enjoy Stonegate Golf Club in 2015.

Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe that the last six months that I've been on property have gone by so quickly. I hope everyone had a great holiday season and is ready for 2015.

The maintenance staff and myself are looking forward to a great year. At this point and time we don’t have any major projects on the horizon for 2015. We will stick with the agronomic plan put in place and we’ll work hard to continue to get these two great courses in the best possible condition for our members, residents, and guests.

Forming new habits and breaking old ones is a hard thing to do, but that is what this time of year is about. We want to invent the newer,

better version of ourselves, and a lot of us make the resolution to be more fit, lose weight, eat better, and give up sweets! (I won’t lie; I do like something sweet from time to time.) Our goals are quite high at first and we show amazing will power for the first week, then we slip a little, and pretty soon we are off the bandwagon in its entirety. This is where the idea of short-term goals comes in to play.

You may have heard it said that it takes 21 days to form a habit, which sounds much more achievable than a whole year when it comes to some things. Some examples would be going to the gym or eating habits. If you make it your goal to get up and head to the gym every morning at 6am, well by the end of the 21 days, it’s become part of your routine, and will be much easier to stick with. Instead of cutting out every not so good food you love, try focusing on eating more fruits and vegetables first at a meal, prior to eating the not as good for you item that you are craving. A simple change like the order you eat food can make a huge change in your waistline without leaving you feeling deprived. We have to

be sensible in our goal setting; otherwise we end up surviving, but not thriving.

This time of year means an increase in attendance in classes too. To all group fitness attendees, please keep in mind the following items to make everyone’s class experience a positive one. 1. Do not enter the studio until the prior class has finished. We know you are excited to get in and get your special spot, but we need to be courteous to the instructor and the other participants and let them finish. 2. If another member has arrived before you and set up in your usual place, just welcome them to the class and set up in your second favorite spot. After all, no one owns any spot in that room. 3. Arrive on time! Arriving on time so you can get a complete warm-up is crucial to prevent injury and keep your body strong and healthy. 4. Respect your instructors! They have worked hard to prepare the classes, so keep the side conversations out of it so they can teach without distractions. We want to make this a positive place for all, so help us by doing your part. Happy New Year!

Healthy Goals for the New Year By Elizabeth Deckard Fitness Director

Elizabeth Deckard [email protected]

I'm excited to bring 12 years of passion, hard work, and dedication in the service industry to Solivita. At a young age I developed a passion for leadership and service within the Food & Beverage industry. Through an outstanding mentoring program, I excelled rapidly through

the ranks within the company gaining operational experience in 60+ food outlets in Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and CityWalk. My service repertoire is vast, having had experience in counter service, sports bars, nightclubs, and fine dining.

In 2006, I led a team as a General Manager of a small neighborhood concept called Hollywood Bistro. The Bistro, as it was commonly called, was set in the quaint city of Winter Springs. I had an opportunity to hold a position on the Winter Springs Events Committee, which was responsible for various community and regional events. My next opportunity took me to work in the

Downtown Orlando area at Wildside Bar and Grille - another neighborhood setting. I was brought on to systematically make improvements to the service experience as well as redevelop the brand for franchising. I was successful in many projects there, but the one I am most proud of was improving the service experience for the guests by developing a well-trained, attentive service staff. Recently, I have freelanced as a restaurant consultant, focusing on small business development, cost control, as well as food service initiatives. I have learned much from my experiences in operating restaurants as well as from many wonderful people I’ve met along the way. I am looking forward to this opportunity at Stonegate Golf Club and to meeting all of you personally.

[ Department Articles ]

I would be remiss in neglecting to recognize the contributions that Executive Chef, Dee Hatsady has made to the development of all the kitchen staff, operations, and improved food quality and value. Recognition also goes to our Director of Golf Operations, Claude Eastwood for providing solid, steady leadership in delivering a quality member and guest service experience along with the capable Pro Shop Team and Superintendent Bill Beasley for his attention to and passion for achieving the best possible results in working with the ever-changing living organism of turf grass. He and his team have made great strides in improving the playing experience on both courses. There is also our Banquet Manager, Marienelle Santiago for her tireless work in planning and organizing events and overseeing a team of servers who deliver personal service for small venues and for the Ballroom of over 200 guests.

Acknowledgements also go out to our Food & Beverage Team Leaders: Pierre Rahmani, Jonathan Kim, Sandra Rosario, and Eric Joseph along with all the team members who provide a number of important services such as servers, bartenders, hostesses, runners, and dish washers who support all our F&B outlets. And last but not least, thank you to our Housekeeping Team for continued maintenance to our facilities. I look forward to leading a motivated team with the single purpose of creating positive changes for 2015. Time may pass quickly, but taking the time to listen will always be important as I continue to get to know the residents of Solivita. I wish you and yours a blessed New Year of peace and joy.

Every January I stop to think about how quickly time goes by. Being here for a little more than three months, it seems time has certainly passed by quickly. As I have come to meet

many residents, listening to your experiences is as important to me now as it was when I first started. It is through listening that we are better able to understand the challenges, solutions, and changes that inevitably need to take place.

Sometimes change comes quickly and other times, painstakingly slow. One significant change that has taken place is the creation of the position of Food & Beverage Operations Manager. This person will work directly with me to put policies, procedures, and training in place to overcome the issues that have been identified as compromising to the F&B experience. These plans were to be implemented with our current Food & Beverage Director, Carmen Cherico. He has evaluated the commitment necessary for such an undertaking and has decided to seek another opportunity to be closer to his family. I appreciate and respect his decision to put family first and wish him and his family all the best.

Looking over prospective candidates to fill this position has taken much time. This appointment requires a very unique skill set and the ability to commit wholeheartedly to the mission. Therefore, I would like to introduce Jeffrey Hatsady as our new F&B Operations Manager. Jeff possesses the experience, commitment, determination, and personality that will work well as we join together in moving the F&B operation forward with a new style of leadership and vision.

Happy New Year from the CGM General ManagerBy Nick Pezzente General Manager, CGM

Nick Pezzente 863-427-7150 ext. [email protected]

Please accept my sincerest thank you for my brief tenure as your Food & Beverage Director. Although my time was relatively short, I met many wonderful residents and members. As I see the direction that is necessary for the success and benefit of the Food & Beverage Operation, I was torn between the hours and commitment required at work and my obligations to my family. The energy and dedication from our General Manager and Executive Chef have been

an inspiration to me. I wish my fellow team members and the residents all the best. As much as I want to remain a part of this effort, I really want to put my energy into spending more time as a husband and father to my family. Thank you all for your support. It has been a pleasure to be a part of this great community. I know that the residents of Solivita are in good hands. I wish you all the best!

LITERARY LECTURE BY PROFESSOR GALLAGHERMonday, February 2nd • 4pm • The PalmsJane Eyre by Charlotte BronteLiterary Lectures are sponsored by the Solivita Book Circle and Friends. Regular attendees, please note change to Mondays. This all time classic novel is set somewhere in the north of England, during the reign of George III (1760–1820), and provides perspectives on a number of important social issues and ideas. If you haven't read it in a while, it might be time for a re-read. Jane Eyre is modern in that she is remarkably strong-minded, she loves passionately, and she learns to accept her less-than-perfect looks. She makes something of herself despite tremendous obstacles, in a time when educated women of the peasant class were not at all common. All readers welcome!

$150 in box tops. So check your grocery items, clip, and save them for SoFEES. Drop off locations: In The Village - Riviera Spa & Fitness Center back counter; Johnny Kondo, 295 Scripps Ranch Road; Sunny Depoian, 163 Sandpiper; Judy Hablewitz, 315 Lake Cassidy; Angelica Rice, 404 Sorrento Road, Bella Viana; and Marie Russo, 165 Rialto Road, Venezia. Fe and Resty Espinosa organized the event, which was attended by around 50 members who enjoyed the delicious potluck dishes and desserts. Despite the hot weather, almost everybody participated in various fun games with so much gusto and competitiveness. This was truly a wonderful day to remember.

Forever Young Music

We start the new year featuring our band members in this picture. Did you know each of our guitar players plays something a little different depending on the song requested? That’s the beauty of our group. It allows us to enhance our lead solos, switch leads, include some chord melody into the mix, and keep a solid rhythm section. No wonder we are the only band in Solivita that dares take on Hotel California. Come request that song next time you’re upstairs in RSF on a Sunday afternoon. We love what we do and all are welcome. Rock ‘On!

New Attitude Red HattersHappy New Year Solivita. We kicked off our holiday season in November by celebrating the birthday of one of our sweetest sisters, Judy Malachi, at Cafe Gauguin in the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando. Later we joined the SoulaVita Line Dancers for a great party and then celebrated Thanksgiving with family. In December, we enjoyed our intimate Christmas party at Mosaics. What a memory making special time. Then off to party with our friends at CARAMVITA's, Solivita Travel Club’s, and African Heritage Cultural Club's Christmas parties and, of course, family gatherings again. Now it's time to plan 2015. Stop, breathe, and relax...ahhh.

Sculptors of SolivitaDiscover your creative side. In our November workshops, Charlene Chaim provided materials for everyone to create

clay napkin rings. What a great first-time project for aspiring artisans and what a great gift idea! Even George Vassilakis, an experienced sculptor, joined in the fun with his butterfly napkin rings. Meet with other artists in the Ceramics Gallery from 9am-12pm on Fridays, January 9th and 23rd. Mark your calendars for February when George will lead workshops demonstrating how to make a picture collage using items from around your house. Club contact information is under the Club Meeting List.

Solivita Bible Study GroupBy now all the presents have been opened and

decorations put away. As we eagerly open our gifts with great anticipation, we sometimes are disappointed. Do I need another tie or another bottle of cologne? People will disappoint us, but God never will. James 1:17 declares, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights..." Spiritual gifts are those that have a lasting effect. The gift of Salvation and the gift of our children are but a few. We meet Thursdays in RSF2 at 10am. Contact Felix and Richetta Andino at 407-729-7747.

Computer Connection of Solivita

The next meeting will be Wednesday, January 7th at 7pm in RSF2. Many of you received new "toys" for Christmas and we'd all like to see what they are. Those of you that received new computers with Windows 8.1 will have questions. I have a list of "must dos" for you so you get off on the right footing from the beginning. Bad habits are easy to make and hard to live with. Therefore, we'd like to help you start good habits with your computer. We may also have more news on Windows 10. If you have questions about our club, please contact Walter Fair at 863-427-3928.

Veterans Club of SolivitaThank You for Your Service In June 1944, 17-year-old Bob Lyons enlisted in the US Navy in Providence,

RI. After 12 weeks of boot camp at Sampson Naval Training Station in New York, he attended Radio School and attained the rank of Radioman Third Class. Sent to the Pacific Theater of Operations and stationed at Okinawa, Japan, Bob helped convert Japan to a peaceful country. While stationed there in October 1945, the island was hit by one of the worst typhoons of all times. Fortunately for Bob and his shipmates, they had just moved from tents into metal Quonset huts. Bob returned home and was discharged on July 13, 1946.

Solivita Book CircleA Land Remembered

November 10th Presentation The Solivita Book Circle sponsored presentation by Rick Smith, son of the late Patrick Smith, was well-attended. His famous novel is revered among readers of all ages and is the winner of the "Most Outstanding Florida Historical Novel." The audience enjoyed this dynamic multimedia show, as they were entertained and enlightened by Rick's quirky humor and clever storytelling ability. Rick's father, who lived to 86 and recently passed away, is very fortunate to have his son lovingly share this powerful story of the "real" Florida. We all came away with a deeper appreciation of Florida's unique history.

Scarlet ChapeauxWhat could be cuter than a pair of snowman earrings? Linda Lelli led the Scarlet Chapeaux through the steps and we were rewarded with a pair of holiday earrings. The proceeds from our raffle at the Fall Festival

purchased gifts for the Salvation Army Angel tree. Knowing that many children would find a new bike and other gifts under their trees brought joy to us all. We celebrated the holidays with our annual dinner. Instead of exchanging gifts, we filled boxes for members of the armed forces stationed in Kuwait. We're looking forward to another year of friendship and fun!

The BirdersOur nation’s symbol is a year-round resident throughout Florida. However, in late spring many of Florida’s eagles head north and return in the fall. From late fall to spring, it is estimated that more than 1,100 pairs of this magnificent raptor breed here. The sunshine state has the third largest Bald Eagle breeding population in the USA after Alaska and Minnesota. Adults have a white head and tail, chocolate-colored plumage, and yellow bill and feet. This gave them an opportunity to apply what they had learned. Our other activity this month was participating in the Great American Read-In by reading to the second grade classes at Palmetto School.

Solivita Budget Wine Tasting & Popcorn ClubIt was “Strange Wine Name Month” for the SBWTP Club. We had a nice Toasted Head Chardonnay, a charming Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina, and an awful Fat Bastard Shiraz from France. The biggest hit was

a cream peach wine from Manischewitz. We had a white chocolate wine called O’Reillys, which we put Ready Whip and Moose Tracks frozen yogurt on. All wines came from Publix (under $10). The host served homemade chocolate chip cake, cranberry pecan cake, and a strange brownie, which came out of the pan in chunks. Fruit, coffee, and Dutch apple pie topped off the desserts.

Solivita is very lucky to have a resident like Mary Rogers. She is a giving, generous, and unselfish lady. She gives of her time and talents not only to make others happy, but also to make them feel comfortable, loved, and secure. Mary began knitting as a young child watching her mother. For the past 30 years, she has knitted baby hats for newborns and delivered them to hospitals wherever she has lived. Presently, Mary and a few Solivita friends deliver over 200 hats every month to Florida Hospital at Celebration, of which, Mary herself knits between 20-60 hats per month. Mary was recently presented with a pin commemorating her 12,000 volunteer hours and 4,000 hats just in the last 5 years. Mary is shown with Valerie Lamm, Director of Volunteer Services at Celebration Hospital holding a pumpkin hat.

Mary’s volunteerism and outreach doesn’t end there. She also donates her time and materials to make upwards of 10 quilts per month for the organization called Project Linus, which gives the quilts to needy children in Polk County. Mary is a member of the Solivita Quilters and donates quilts also to their charities, such as the Veterans, Peace River, and HOME, to name a few. In addition to everything else, she has been a member of Solivita’s Polk County CERT group for many years. Mary, and people like her, is a credit to the groups and organizations that they serve and the community in which they live.
