DOWNTON ABBEY RETURNS TO MASTERPIECE

Filled with weddings, births, abandonment, financial crises, sudden riches, and equally sudden tragedy, the last season of Downton Abbey on Masterpiece left audiences spellbound — and wanting more. The popular series starring Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, and guest star Shirley MacLaine returns this month, so thankfully, the wait is over!

Season 4 begins in 1922, ushering in the Roaring Twenties and exciting new characters and guest stars. The new faces include Paul Giamatti (Sideways) as Cora’s playboy brother, Harold; Dame Harriet Walter (Little Dorrit) as Violet’s friend, Lady Shackleton; Gary Carr as jazz singer Jack Ross; Joanna David (Bleak House) as the Duchess of Yeovil; Tom Cullen as the dashing Lord Gillingham; Julian Ovenden (Smash) as an unexpected houseguest; and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa as soprano Nellie Melba.

To whet your appetite for the premiere on January 6, we’ve gathered some fascinating facts about all things Downton Abbey:

Prime Real Estate — Highclere Castle, the real-life setting for Downton Abbey, sits on an estate that is larger than Central Park.

Six Degrees of Maggie Smith — Downton Abbey Executive Producer Gareth Neame’s grandfather is Ronald Neame, who directed Maggie Smith in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969. Smith won an Oscar for her portrayal of the title character, an eccentric teacher at a Scottish girls’ school.

Circus Time — Which Downton Abbey actor can juggle, walk a tightrope, and ride a unicycle? Jim Carter, who plays Mr. Carson, the butler. He went to circus school in New York in the seventies.

Thank you, Lady Cora — In a recent MetroFocus interview, Masterpiece Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton revealed that she initially turned down Downton Abbey. She reconsidered when she

learned that Maggie Smith had been cast, but it was a phone call from Elizabeth McGovern that sealed the deal. After the first cast read-through, McGovern called Eaton and said, “This is going to be really special.”

In January, Nature takes viewers on a journey from the Canadian wilderness to the Indonesian jungle.

The coywolf is a new hybrid carnivore, a mixture of western coyote and eastern wolf that is slipping unnoticed into urban cities. Meet the Coywolf shows how quickly adaptation and evolution can occur, especially with human interference.

On the other side of the world, filmmaker Colin Stafford-Johnson profiles the feisty crested black macaques in The Funkiest Monkeys. Teaming up with a local expert, Stafford-Johnson documents the macaques’ plight, allowing him to share their story with local schools and communities, hoping to spur preservation of the charismatic creatures.
