CLASS OF 1953 REUNION (RON VETTER) The 60th Reunion began on Thursday evening with a ”catch-up” gathering at the home of Mary Ellen Ostrem Matras. It was Thursday Sept. 5th, 2013 and we looked forward to our planned three day event. Out of state classmates Jack Dignan and Duke Durham from California and Pat and Jerry Wacker from Florida, along with Dick Greenham from Ohio made the trip.

On Friday it was off to planned tours with Mickey Guckian Witalec, Dick Greenham. Ron Vetter, Don Breneau and Harold Gates and spouses visiting Edsel Ford House. Friday night was Pizza/Pasta night at DeLuca’s Restaurant. Eleven

alumni with spouses and guests shared more stories of life experiences and memories.

Saturday morning’s golf outing at Taylor Meadows CC was dominated by the

play of Jim Freas, Dick Page and Duke Durham. Jack DeGuise and Jim Hayes took “duffer-of-the-day” honors. Our Saturday night banquet was held at O’Kelly KofC. After dinner “entertainment” was provided by the dynamic duo, Jerry Wacker and Ron Vetter singing their rendition of three popular old-time memorable standards: “Scotch and Soda”, “Between Winston-Salem and Nashville Tennessee” and “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”.

Dick Greenham held up a large cue-card with words of the chorus so everyone could sing along. Audrey Kornell Dailing, Margaret Kennedy Lyall and Mickey Guckian Witalic helped lead everyone in this rousing rendition.

After things settled down, Pat Wasylyzyn Kemp conducted a quiz on identifying towns and cities in Michigan with the clues given. World traveler Mary Ellen Ostrem Matras was the winner of this event. Our class “MC” Jerry Wacker led the group in recalling “tales” of Sacred Heart Underworld

which brought out heretofore untold stories of deeds left undiscovered and unpunished. (Note to future banquet planners…never, I mean NEVER, book a hall at KofC when a wedding reception is taking place in the next hall!).

Those who could stay over attended 9:30 Mass Sunday, toured the Parish Museum, thanks to archivist Mary Beth Oravec, and had a farewell brunch at Leon’s. A special thanks to the Planning Committee: Mary Ellen Ostrem Matras, Pat Wasylyzyn Kemp, Audrey Kornell Dailing, Dick Page, Jim Hayes and Ron Vetter for a fun-filled, memorable event. All vowed to plan a 65th if still able.

ALUMNI MEMORIES 1940 -Beverly Bufton Toolson: I am very pleased that Ray Fuhrman (our class president) has put up a plaque in the church in honor of women from our school who served during World War II. Note: Beverly served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, along with her three

brothers, following their mother’s service given during WWI.

1946-James Penn: I am writing this short letter to tell you about my aunt, Elvina Korte Taylor, who turned 101 in June. She was born on 6-16-1912 and graduated from Sacred Heart in 1931. Mother Julia was the principal, and Elvina remembers her 1st grade teacher was Sister Ann Marie Veronica.

Elvina was born on a farm next door to Henry Ford’s farm. She remembers the first Sacred Heart Church was on Mason Street between Nona and Park streets. Now back in those days they rode a horse and buggy to church. Now if the weather was bad, Henry would take them to church in his Model A or Model T; she was not sure which one it was. He would drop them off, drive around Dearborn, and return to pick them up for the return trip to the farm. Elvina does remember that her father was in the third grade with Henry Ford and that her brother, Eugene, worked for Henry doing yard work on his bushes and flowers.

The Korte family of five daughters and two brothers moved into the city and lived on Garrison behind Kroger’s store. Two of her sisters worked as teachers in the Taylor schools. Elvina’s older brother worked for Borden’s and delivered milk to homes in Dearborn. After she married Phil Taylor, they lived on Donaldson between Monroe and Elmdale. After their third child was born, they moved to Wilson and from there to Pinckney, MI. Elvina worked as a nurse at Mt. Carmel Hospital. When their three kids got married, Elvina and her husband, Phil, moved to Lake Placid, FL. When Phil died, Elvina moved in with her daughter, Mary Lou West, where she lives now. Her picture and the pictures of her two sisters, Margaret and Loretta, hang in the halls of Sacred Heart.

This is a picture of Elvina taken when she turned 100.

I guess she has lived a long life because of her job as a nurse where she learned to take good care of herself.

I live three miles away from Elvina, and see her once a week.

1948-Jim Adam: Jim O'Donell (Class of 48) and I used to travel everywhere together in my 1930 Ford that had a rumble seat. We used to pick up girls on the way home from the football games and give them a ride home. One time we picked up Pat Forton and Mary Jean Houpert (both class of 48), and then Pat Forton and I started to go together and Jim O'Donell had to ride in the rumble seat.

I still have the 1930 Ford, and Pat and I still travel in it.

1948-Claudette Pfeiffer: Sweet Innocence:Ted LaTour and I were never boyfriend and girl friend, but we shared a special comradeship. And like most 15-year-olds at that time, harbored romantic fantasies, imagining their fulfillment in Hollywood inspired Technicolor.

Ted, who had carrot-red hair, a skinny body and a set of dental braces, was no exception. He was wild about one of our classmates, Dorothy Henige. Large, brown doe-eyes and bright, yellow Shirley Temple curls graced Dorothy’s pretty face. She also possessed a petite body and an aura of sweet femininity that Ted could not resist. She was the all-consuming object of his affection. His burning desire had reached the point of his wanting to plant a gentle, chaste kiss on the lips of this girl of his dreams.

One day Ted and I were walking home from school together. While crossing the Military Road Bridge over the tranquil Rouge River, without warning, Ted said, “Claudette, I have a favor to ask of you. You gotta help me.”

He then told me that he had finally mustered the courage to ask Dorothy for a date for the coming weekend, and she had accepted. But now he had another problem. “I want to kiss Dorothy this weekend,” he said, “but I’ve never kissed a girl before. I don’t know how to do it.”

I’d never kissed a boy, so I didn’t know much about kissing either. “Gosh, I don’t know what to tell you,” I said. “I guess you just, well, kiss her, maybe like you kiss your little sister or your dog.” Obviously I had no idea how to go about it.

“I don’t think that’s like kissing a girl,” he said. “Maybe I should practice kissing. Let me practice on you!” He took me completely by surprise with this proposition. But after some hesitation I said, “I really don’t have much experience along these lines, but okay, because you are a good friend, I’ll let you kiss me.”

With that we stopped walking. Oblivious to passing traffic, Ted then gently placed his hands on my shoulders, brought his lips down to my level, closed his eyes and planted a quick “buzz” on my puckered lips. It was so fleeting that I wondered if we had really connected. Anyway, this brief encounter seemed to give him the confidence he needed for his weekend date.

After his date with Dorothy, I asked him, “So how was it?” “Just fine,” he said. “Yeah, but I mean how’d it go with the kissing part.”

He grinned kind of sheepishly and said, “At the end of our date, Dorothy and I were standing on her front porch, and I did just what you and I had practiced. I put my hands on Dorothy’s shoulders, puckered up my lips and was just about to kiss her. Then the porch light came on, and her dad appeared in the doorway and hollered, “Dorothy, it’s time to come in NOW! Good night Ted.”

Poor Ted. In those days most fathers were very protective of their young daughters. I suppose they remembered all too well what it was like to be a young man in love, hormones surging. Ted never told me whether or not he ever tried to kiss Dorothy again, but at least he felt he was prepared.

After graduation Ted and Dorothy parted ways. Ted became a member of the Holy Cross Congregation and later the principal of an all-boys Catholic Academy. Dorothy joined the Sisterhood of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She taught high school students for some years. At a relatively young age, Dorothy suffered a sudden and tragic death. While on the Blue Water Bridge connecting Port Huron, Mich. with Sarnia, Ontario, she experienced a severe asthma attack and never recovered.

After 20 years in the Congregation of the Holy Cross Congregation, Ted left the order and eventually married Kay, who had been in the convent for some years. At one of our class reunions, with a twinkle in her eye Kay surprised me when she said, “Claudette, Ted has always been a very affectionate and loving husband. The lessons he learned from you have stayed with him all throughout our marriage. I owe you many thanks.”

1953-Ron Vetter: Sad to hear about Tom Wiedling passing. We grew up together as his house was about four houses away from mine. We went to Kindergarten, made our first communion and rode our bikes to Sacred Heart together, played all the street games and did some "mischievous" things in the neighborhood together. Smoked our first cigarettes together (roll your own kind because cigarettes were rationed during WWII) in our underground "fort".There are more child-hood memories I

could relate but won't bore you all with that here. My last contact with Tom was this past summer when I called him and tried to get him to come to our class reunion. I even talked to his brother Fred (class of '52, whom Tom lived with) for help in convincing Tom to come to Dearborn. I spoke to him twice stating he should come as, "this could be the last time remaining classmates will be able to get together". Sadly, my efforts failed. Rest in peace Tom, may the Lord bless you and keep you. A note to our survivors: Our visit here on earth is winding down. May we all have the health and energy to run down the home stretch with gusto, and live life to its fullest! We are truly blessed.

1954-Henry DeCaluwe: My wife, Elizabeth Korte (class of 1996), passed away on December 10, 2012, daughter of Wilfred and Bernice Korte, graduates of Sacred Heart. This was the 150th birthday celebration of Henry Ford this past Saturday at Fairlane. My father, Alphons, was Head Gardener of Fairlane, beginning in 1923, hired in 1921, and remained until Henry and Clara Ford died. My mother and sister lived at the Michigan Ave. gatehouse until it was demolished for the Hyatt Hotel in the 1960’s. Dad often decorated Sacred Heart Church with flowers from the Ford gardens on First Communion Sundays, Easter, and Christmas. Mom and Dad both died as long-term members of Sacred Heart.

1957-Brian Murphy: Just had a very good year: my wife, Toni Sanchez-Murphy, was crowned Ms. Senior Michigan 2012 and our daughter Lauren accompanied us to Atlantic City last October for the Ms. Senior America Pageant. A Blast! Then the same threesome went to New York last

Toni, Brian, & Lauren Murphy

1959-Greg and Beth (Santeiu) Malcho: We are happy to hear that the Alumni Association is active and growing. I wonder if the group might consider using excess funds as a donation to the retirement fund for the IHM Sisters who were responsible for our education. Many sisters who taught at Sacred Heart through the years are still alive and living at the Mother House in Monroe. The residents call it “coming home”. Sister Ann Pauline O’Connor, who taught science, is a current resident and a delight to visit with. Sister Diann Cousino from the class of ’59 works in the archives at the Mother House. Several members of the class of 1959 have visited the IHM Mother House for a tour in the past year. It’s a beautiful facility which provides excellent care for the aging IHMs. Anyone is welcome to visit and if someone wanted to check on a favorite sister, they might want to contact Sr. Diann who could do a bit of research and provide the information. Mary Jo Carney Johnson (class of ’59) has been volunteering in a literacy project begun by the IHMs in the city of Detroit. This group also would welcome any donations. Contact information: Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI 48162,734-420-8308, www.ihmsisters.org

1967-Tom Forbes: Recovered memory: Receiving report cards from Msgr. Hardy. A frown or a smile could really impact your day. Good preparation for the corporate world to follow. Have responded to incentives ever since. Still trying to remember what all those ribbons in the missals were for though.

1960-Betty Krivacs: Way back when I was about 11 years old, I was the water boy for the football team. There was an article in the Detroit news about me. I was a tomboy and liked to play baseball, football, and basketball. When I started at Sacred Heart, all 12 grades were in one school.

1970-Judith Jones Fitzmaurice: Judith Jones, class of 1970, is Professor and Chair of General Dentistry at Boston University. Married to Michael Fitzmaurice, the two have two grown daughters: Lorraine who studies conducting and Helen who teaches high school physics. Michael is also a teacher; he teaches computers in Middle School.

1971-Peter Locke: I came upon ihmsisters.org/who-we-are/members/in-memoriam/ today and it certainly has brought back so many wonderful memories of the sisters. From my first encounter with the sisters in first grade, Sister Rose Bernadette Van Ooteghem, Sister Margaret (Malachy) Sullivan and all the others whose names right

now are located somewhere in the back of my head, I thank you for your guidance, patience and service to our school and parish community. I still remember that on the first Sunday before school would begin, at the 10 a.m. Mass all the sisters would file in and sit in the front pews. It would be our first glimpse to see who was back and it was also a quick reminder that the school year was really back. Thank you and God bless you for being you.-Peter Locke, Class of 1971

REMEMBRANCE OF A CLASSMATE Life Story written by a family member of Judy Toth Peiffer, class of 1958, at http://www.lifestorynet.com/ memories/2321

No one ever had to wonder what Judy Toth Peiffer was thinking. Even when she said nothing, which was rare, anyone could tell from her presence that Judy loved life, and sincerely enjoyed helping others to feel the promise present in their own lives. She inspired everyone she met to be a better person and to live every day to its fullest extent.

As America watched the beginning World War II unfold in Europe, Judith Carol Peiffer was born. From the moment she entered the world on August 24, 1940, Judith was known to everyone as "Judy." She was raised in Dearborn, Michigan by her parents, Carol (Augustine) and David J. Toth, Sr. Although her earliest days at St. Gabriel's Catholic School were relatively unremarkable, Judy was sure to make up for this during her high school years at Sacred Heart. One of her most memorable moments here involved her being removed from the lead role in the senior play. To accomplish this, she partook in ventures like making a line down the back of her leg in protest of the school's no-stocking policy. She also endured a broken right arm while attending Sacred Heart, and used it as an excuse to lighten her workload, even though she was left-handed. Judy applied the same mischievous behavior at home as well. She and her brother, for instance, would sneak upstairs to enjoy a quick smoke and exchange gossip. Although her youth was spent being a risk-taker of sorts, Judy moved into adulthood using her positive attitude and humor to make a constructive impact in the world around her

After graduating from Sacred Heart in 1958 and attending the University of Michigan at Dearborn for a couple of years, Judy found that she enjoyed being involved with community organizations. With a love of learning, children, and helping people, Judy became involved with both area libraries and the Girl Scout Council. She has held positions at the Dearborn Public Library and the University of Michigan Library in Dearborn, and actually established a

library at her familiar Sacred Heart Church. She also volunteered at her daughters' school libraries.

After twelve years with this program, Judy began a position at the Farmington Community Library Children's Department in 1991, which she held for 11 years.

As giving as Judy was to her community, she remained committed to sharing herself with her family as well. With her girls, Judy pushed family tradition and heritage. Her energy created a nourishing environment, where Judy and her daughters could create lasting memories together. Pam and Carrie remember their mother collecting their friends at home, letting all the children call her "mother," but reserving "Mom" for only her own two daughters. Judy also gave her daughters nicknames, as she did with many people. While Carrie's is "Carrie The Cat," Pam is known as the "Kansas City daughter." They, in turn, christened their mother, simply, "Queen." The girls always felt their mother's love for them, and remember Judy's particular pride when Carrie graduated from college and, in celebration, began dancing excitedly at the bar, even without a proper dance floor.

Judy made all her experiences as enjoyable as possible, yet her specific interests included cooking, planting violets, being a member of the Altar Society, and spending time with animals, especially her cats Tigger and Patches. The symphony music she loved helped her to digest her food, or so she said. Her favorite food group was decidedly "Chocolate." She enjoyed matching the correct wine with the various dishes, chocolate and otherwise, she prepared, and she had an unusual fondness of a drink consisting of tomato juice and beer that she named T.J.B. Being crafty was another of her passions, and she cherished her butterflies, ornaments-of-the-year, craft supplies, and the "stuff" that consumed her garage. The "stuff" evolved from her many journeys to Michael's, JoAnn Fabrics, and Franks Nursery, where she gathered materials to make bracelets, wedding decorations, and the holiday ornaments she loved making for people. She was a pioneer on the craft front, discovering trends like gel candles even before they became popular. And no one could forget the dress she made back in the ‘70s made entirely of beer cans. Yes, the craft room was certainly Judy's favorite place to spend time at home, either there, or in bed with her bathrobe wrapped around her and a bag of Downey potato chips at her side.

When asked to define her best day, Judy would confidently reply, "Make today the best day." It is certain that she followed this formula with success, constructing a life where all who knew her speak only of her optimism,

kindness, and devotion to making people aware of their own ability to do good work in the world.

Judy passed away January 23, 2004, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, after an eight month battle with a rare type of cancer.
