Darcy Mingoia Executive Director Chancellor's Breakfast 2010 An annual highlight Our 2009 Essay Finalists The highlight of the year for many of our board members and donors is the Chancellor's Breakfast. On Wednesday, January 27, beginning at 7:30 am, at Shirley Acres, 217 Woerner Road, in Northwest Houston, five student finalists, one from each college's campus, will read their winning essays describing the impact and importance of the Lone Star College System in their lives. This event gives us an opportunity to see the results of our fund-raising and donations, but more importantly, it allows attendees to hear about the challenges facing our students in a very personal way. As students explain the roadblocks faced in securing much needed training and education, it is obvious that the Lone Star College System is changing lives. Education opens the door for our students by providing opportunities that did not exist prior to their training and education. Students, who previously were employed for minimum wages, become skilled and better paid employees. Their families are also transformed.

The Gala brings together a wide variety of System andFoundation donors. In addition to a fabulous dinner and lots ofdancing (Toast and Jam are committed to an encoreperformance), the event allows community members to hear anupdate from the Chancellor, Dr. Richard Carpenter, and to hearfrom a student explaining how their life has been changed byreceiving an education from the Lone Star College System. Co-Chairs Colene and Carl Joiner, of Joiner Partnership, Inc., areleading a team of dedicated volunteers in efforts to secureunderwriters, table sponsors, and auction items. Committeemeetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each monthbeginning in January. All are welcome (and encouraged) toattend. Student Highlight Karen Jaramillo - Winner of John P. Hughes MemorialScholarshipThe first recipient of the John P. Hughes Memorial Scholarship isKaren Jaramillo. Karen is a student at Lone StarCollege-Kingwood and she is pursing certification as anOccupational Therapy Assistant. Karen decided to work in thisfield because she watched how her younger sister, disabled with abirth defect, benefitted from the therapy team who worked toinsure that she could walk. Their persistence and skilledtechniques have made all the difference in her sister and Karenwants to have that impact on others. As she explains, "I havealways wanted to contribute to people's well being and reassurethem of their ability to take care of themselves after tragedycomes to their lives". With three children in the family, with the second about to entercollege, Karen's parents were forced to make a difficult decision. The could not continue to fund Karen's education. Distraught andunsure as to what she should do, Karen visited the financial aidoffice on her campus and applied for every scholarship for whichshe was qualified. Imagine her joy when she was named the first recipient of thismemorial scholarship!
