Social CornerAt the CSS Board meeting in January your “Social Chairman” published a full slate ofSocial Events for review by the Board. My intention is to publish the entire year’s eventson the CSS Calendar on the Web site so that the members can plan effectively and wecan increase participation in the events. In order to get as much coverage and inputinto the process, the list was circulated and discussed at the February General Meeting. The social events include places we have gone before and new adventures. The goal ofthe social events is to caravan to a place of interest where we can participate in anadventure and have time to talk with other members about recent Car Show and Rallyesthat we as a club have participated in. The following is the proposed list:

2009 Banquet

The kick-off event for 2009 was the annual January Banquet. Let me first say that Renitadid an absolutely fantastic job finding, negotiating, and arranging the venue and DJ. Ithink everyone will agree that the view out the large picture windows of Orange county atnight was breath-taking.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and it was fun seeing so many members dressedup in evening attire. I thought it was also very creative of Renita to have name platesprinted for everyone to place on the table where they wanted to sit. That way there wasno question for new members what their table mates names were. It certainly was easysince everyone at my table had the same name – “Prime Rib”.

The banquet serves several purposes. It is the official business meeting of the CSSCorporation as specified in the corporation bylaws and it is a celebration of the past

Page 9: January 2009 Volume 50, No. 1corvettesupersports.com/Newsletters/2009/Jan 2009... · 2009 has a lot of activities planned for club members to participate in and have a great deal

year’s fund raising for our charities as well as a kick-off event for the next year. Asstipulated in the bylaws, we announced the newly elected officers and board members. These are listed at the top of this newsletter. We also presented representatives from ourcharities with our donation checks from our fund raising activities throughout the year.

Then Tom Cuccio entertained us as MC with his trivia questions that stumped most of us.I have not heard though whether any of the Lottery Quick Picks actually won anything.Tom announced the winner of the “Rookie of the Year”. This year the Board of Directorsacknowledged Roger Bacon as the “Rookie of the Year” for his work on last year’s Carshow. Then, Tom announced the winner of the Most Valuable Member Trophy. Thetrophy is a perpetual trophy that stays with the winner for the year and is returned to Tomat the end of the year. The Most Valuable member is voted on by secret ballot of themembership. I must tell you all that I am humbled by the vote from the membership atlarge by honoring me as that Most Valuable Member. I was speechless. If anyone knowsme, I am never speechless but I was truly overcome by this honor. All of the members ofthe club are a great extended family and I do enjoy planning fun things for us to do as aclub. Thank you all again for this honor.

During the Banquet, we had a slide show running that showed pictures from all ofoutings from 2008. Some of the slides showed our trips to Oak Glen for the “Pie Run”, tothe Palm Springs Arial Tram Way, the Big Bear Bash, Spring Mountain Raceway, The LaPalma Parade, our August Car Show, Mount Wilson, USS Midway, Temecula Days ofWine and Roses Rallye, Reagan Library, Ron and Karen’s 40th Celebration, and Easterwith the marines.

January Birthday CelebrationsBy Henry Anonymous

Thirteen members celebrated birthdays in January. There may be others, but they willnot admit it. Ten Capricorns, otherwise known as the goats, celebrated until the 19th,then three Aquarius carried the water to the month end.

Bill Stel was the first to celebrate after the New Year and had moderate gift expectations. He said, “I’m happy to qualify for senior dinners.”

Mark Taffolla and Dennis Dawson share the same number nine date. Maybe they sharemore, but the facts are unknown. Dennis spent time with his family. “I took mom to amovie and saw Valkyrie,” he said.

Chris Glodery and Marge Huhta popped out on the tenth. Besides sharing the same birthdate, they both have exceptional husbands. “Greg took me to a movie. First time in tenyears. We saw Gran Torino,” said Chris. Marge was treated to The Hobbit, where dinnerstarted with wine and ended with wine.

We turned out to surprise Rick Miller two days before his birthday. It is commonlybelieved that Rick was truly surprised.

Page 10: January 2009 Volume 50, No. 1corvettesupersports.com/Newsletters/2009/Jan 2009... · 2009 has a lot of activities planned for club members to participate in and have a great deal

Another duo, Kathy Baddley and Art Huhta share the 16th. “I had a fun time with a groupof friends,” said Kathy. Art obliquely mentioned dining and dancing with his first wife. Then he paid the bill.

Unconfirmed sources report that Scott Glover was considering another tattoo for hisbirthday on the 17th.

Shirley Jones, our gracious host at the Big Bear Bash, celebrated her day on the 19th, thelast Capricorn date.

The first Aquarius is Ann Meewenberg. She celebrated by going out to dinner withfamily. When asked, she said, “There was no surprise.”

Dianne Wiest planned a nice day. “My plans were blown to cover for another nurse,” shesaid. She reorganized and celebrated a combined birthday with her grandson andgranddaughter.

Dave Stewart celebrated January’s last birthday on the 30th.

Best wishes to all from Corvette Super Sports.

Corvette Track Days - Parumph – March 7th and 8th

Joe Orrico has proposed that CSS sponsor a High Speed NCCC event in November of this year. Itturns out that the region has had no high speed events scheduled that anyone can remember. Toenter into the high speed event the driver needs a high speed NCCC license which Joe willcoordinate the issuance of during the Corvette Track Days in Parumph on March 7th and 8th. Toqualify for the high speed license, one needs to participate in and pass the high speed driving schoolat Spring Mountain Raceway. When you have passed that driving course and have not crashedyour car, you are qualified for the NCCC license.
