Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 20, 2019

First Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5 Psalm 96:1-2, 2-3, 7-8, 9-10; Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; Gospel: John 2:1-11

“Do whatever he tells you.”

It is touching, yet not surprising, that Mary is so very concerned about protecting the dignity of the couple married in Cana. She tells Jesus, “They have no wine.” Jesus responds with compassion and respect for the couple. Like his mother, not wanting them to suffer from ridicule, Jesus transforms jars of water into an abundance of wine! Culturally, wine was expected and a sign of hospitality, joy and, most of all, God’s blessing. This first miracle of Jesus is a powerful sign of God’s divine love received and shared with the couple and their community. We remember today the gift and dignity of all people. Isaiah tells us that “as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride so shall your God rejoice in you.” God takes delight in those who respect the dignity of others and share with them the joy of God’s divine love. The Spirit and the spiritual gifts that we have received, as Paul tells us, are to be shared for the common good. We do what Jesus tells us. And, then, miracles happen!

participating. All pledges have been fulfilled. After meeting our $10,500 commitment to the Diocese, $36,705 was added to our Capital Campaign Fund.

Prayer for Healing Victims of Abuse

God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just: You gave your only Son to save us by the blood of his cross.

Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust place in them.

Hear our cries as we agonize over the harm done to our brothers and sisters. Breathe wisdom into our prayers, soothe restless hearts with hope, steady shaken spirits with faith: Show us the way to justice and wholeness, enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and transform our brokenness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility and grace, so that we may act with justice and find peace in you. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Lectors and Ministers of the Eucharist

Please consider serving as a Minister of the Eucharist or Lector for one of our Sunday Masses. For more information speak with Fr. Dennis or leave a message at 659-2224 or [email protected]. Thank you!

Youth Corner (John 2:1-11)

Mary urges us today to listen to Jesus: “Do whatever he tells you.” These are the only words of Mary in John’s Gospel. They are important and remind us that Jesus is our teacher and the worker of miracles! His words and Spirit call us to do what may seem impossi-ble—but of course with God nothing is impossible!

Blessed Wisdom of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

“Every person must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. ” “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Bishop Wilkerson, Diocese of Monterey

The Diocese of Monterey released a list of priests who have been credibly accused of abusing child-ren. Bishop Wilkerson said in his letter released along with the list, “This has been a painful process for all involved. Sexual misconduct with a minor is a heinous sin and crime and something that should never happen—especially by a trusted person such as a priest, deacon or religious. I deeply apologize to every victim of sexual misconduct by anyone associated with the Diocese of Monterey and I extend the offer of counseling to you. To access these services, please contact our Victims’ Assistance Coordinator, Rio Castillo, at 800-321-5220 or [email protected].”

We, your clergy are profoundly sorry for the abuse that has occurred in the past, and we pledge to do everything in our power to prevent a single case of abuse from ever happening again.

The Diocesan Safe Environment Office offers classes for volunteers, parents, parish staff, and children. Contact the Safe Environment Coordinator, Deacon Warren Hoy, at [email protected] for information.
