1.0 INTRODUCTION

John Queally, Grenan Pig Farm, Grenan, Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford – Registered Licence

No. P0686-01 – License dated 27th day of October 2004. This report covers the period from

January 1st 2010 up to December 31st 2010.

The pig unit is situated in Grenan townland 16.5 km south west of Waterford City and 5.75 km

east of Kilmacthomas and 1.75 km south of the N25 - at E245232 N106770. The topography of

the land around the pig unit consists of undulating farm land with intermittent rocky hill

outcrops.

The site Manager is Paul Lynch.

The Company’s environmental policy is to implement the requirements of the IPC License and

carry out monitoring required by the License.

2.0 SITE DESCRIPTION

The pig unit elevation is approximately 120 - 125 metres above sea level. The site is located on

the farm owned by the family of Michael Queally (brother) but the pig unit is owned by John

Queally. The entrance lane to the pig unit is shared by the adjoining dairy and beef farm. The pig

unit is located on the north eastern slopes of Slievenamona (164 m above sea level) and adjoining

small hills in Ballyvohalane. The land on and around the site consists of undulating farm land

with small hills in the east and north of the area. The soils are generally dry. Kill is the nearest

village and is located 3.75 km directly south of the unit. The site drains eastwards.

The facility is licensed for 560 sows and progeny.

The average number of pigs on the site in 2010 was as follows; 292 dry sows, 58 farrowing sows,

3 boars, 134 gilts, 501 weaners and 71 fat pigs.

2.1 Planning Status

The site has full planning status – Planning reference PD 303 / 93.

3.0 SUMMARY INFORMATI0N

3.1 Pig Manure Storage

There is approximately 6,000 m3 of pig manure storage of which approximately 1,000 m3 is

uncovered.

Available storage capacity figures were not recorded in 2010.

3.2 Alterations to Landbank in 2010

There were no alterations to the land-bank in 2010

3.3 Actual Pig Manure Applications –vs- Planned Pig Manure Applications in 2010

Summary data of actual application is attached in appendix 1. According to the 2010 fertilizer

plan 13,200 m3 of pig manure can be applied to lands available to take pig manure from the site.

Approximately 6,985 m3 of pig manure was removed from the pig unit in 2010. There were no

over applications in 2010.

Pig manure samples were not taken in 2010. From previous samples the slurry content is as

follows; 3.8% DM, 0.61 kgs of P and 3.876 kgs of N per m3. For the fertilizer plan the N & P

content as per Si 610 of 2010 was used ie 4.2 kgs N/kg and 0.8 kgs P/kg per m3 and N is 50%

available.

3.4 Waste not destined for Landspreading (appendix 2)

The animal tissue waste was transported by Molloy Waste Services Ltd to Munster Proteins t/a

Waterford Proteins – R919. The site was de populated from end of February to beginning of

September. Approximately 29.7 tonnes of animal tissue waste was produced in 2010. There were

22 collections in 2010. SRM 1 forms are available for inspection at the site.

The general domestic rubbish (packaging etc.) is transported to Landfill by Greenstar. One bin

per fortnight of domestic refuse is removed in the 12 month period ending 31/12/2010.

Approximately 0.95 tonnes of recyclable waste and 3.22 tonnes of general waste was removed by

Greenstar for recycling per annum. Empty medicine bottles are washed out on site and disposed

of via recycle wheelie bin. Copies of waste permits are available on site.

Sharps and veterinary waste was stored on site in 2010 and not removed.

Fluorescent tubes were stored on site for recycling.

The septic tank was inspected twice in 2010 (appendix 6).

3.5 Energy Consumption

Kerosene oil (0.2 % Sulphur) are used mainly for heating the pig houses. In 2010 41,799 litres of

Kerosene were used.

In 2010 314,307 units of electricity were used.

3.6 Complaints

There were no complaints in 2010. A register of complaints is maintained on site (appendix 7).

3.7 Environmental Incidents

There were no environmental incidents in the 12 month period ending 31/12/2010.

3.8 Vermin Control

Adequate vermin control is maintained on site. A record of monitoring baiting points is

maintained on site and attached in appendix 5.

3.9 Training

Training records are maintained on site.

3.10 Water Analysis Results

3,023 m3 of water were consumed in 2010. Ground water monitoring site GW 1 has to be tested

once per year. The surface water outlet of has to be tested quarterly and visually inspected

weekly. Two well samples and 2 surface water samples were taken in 2010.

3.10.1 Ground water quality

3.10.1.1 Ground water Nitrates.

The analysis results are shown in appendix 4. Some values of samples in 2010 exceed guide

values.

3.10.1.2 Ground water Faecal Coliforms

The coliform count was less than 1 in 2010.

3.10.2.2 Surface water Phosphorous

The surface water phosphorous levels were low and therefore within guidelines in 2010.

The surface water NH3 levels were low and therefore within guidelines in 2010.

5.0 MANAGEMENT OF ACTIVITY

5.1 Corrective Actions required

(1) Submit AER on time

(2) Resume recording slurry levels

(3) Take a slurry sample each year.

5.2 Responsibilities

The management structure on the facility is unchanged. The management is directly responsible

for implementing the corrective actions. Management will be available on site to meet with

authorized persons of the Agency at all reasonable times. It is the policy of the facility to have all

relevant documentation available for members of the public – where appropriate.
