Pastor’s 2 Cents From: Fr. Jim DeBruycker
The time from the late seventies into the early eighties was the golden age of self-help theories.
If you were in the helping professions, you were into Gestalt Theory, getting in touch with your
feelings (let’s all break into dyads now), recovered memories, Transcendental Meditation &
Transactional Analysis, and/or co-dependency. God knows I had my chakras realigned more
than a few times. I even found my animal familiar with the help of a native healer - a raven; they
cackle and hang around death a lot.
I’m not making fun of these theories - just the people who read a book and then declare them-
selves experts; “did that, done that” equals trouble. One of my favorites was having launching
parties. Supposedly, the first launching parties were conceived by therapist and co-dependency
guru, Sondra Smalley.
Co-dependent people have a hard time with self-identity. They need to take ownership of who
they are and own their own personal power - it took 15 years of therapy to be able to write that
sentence. So like the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz who needed a diploma to prove his wis-
dom, the co-dependent needs a certificate to proclaim themselves a certified graduated adult,
or a document stating, ‘quit griping and make up your mind.’
After years of listening to me complain, my fellow chaplains at HCMC threw me a surprise
launch party with the hopes that I would finally shut up and quit being a putz. Sadly I lost the
certificate. I need a refresher launching and I kind of see all this cancer stuff as a wakeup call.
One of the sad things about adulthood is you don’t get too many proficiency updates. If you
screw up in your professional work, someone will generally let you know, but in your every-
day life as a mensch, you probably won’t get a lot of feedback - unless you are Larry David.
It would be nice to have a voice from heaven proclaim, “You are my beloved Son with whom I
am well pleased.” Usually, in my head I only hear a voice moaning, “What were you thinking,
you schmuck?” Of course when Jesus heard that praise from heaven, he translated it as,
“Enough with the Christmas vacation - get to work.” Oy Vey! Get off your tuchas! Be good to
yourself.
Happy New Year! (And thanks to Ellis Wiener and his book, Yiddish with Dick and Jane.)
Gym Masses
Presider: Fr. James Cassidy
Pre-mass: On this Baptism of the Lord
Sunday, parishioners Alan Nachtigal
and Blake Wilson share their journey to
bring their son, Cohen, into the Catholic
faith through Baptism.
Our own Christina Pawlowski will in-
spire our worship with a meditation solo.
Tommy Barbarella, bandleader and
keyboardist, will offer an offertory song.
Thank you to all of our musicians who
lead our sung prayer each Sunday.
Family Mass
On this Feast of the Baptism of the
Lord, as we think about how we are
all beloved children of God, we have
a story by Barbara Joosse, I Love You
the Purplest, about a mother’s love for
her two very different boys. Thank you
to our readers Jeanne Ford and Enzo
and Luca La Hoz Calassara. See you
in the church at 9:45/11:45am. All are
welcome to our joyful liturgies!

Catholic Social Teaching: The Foundation of Our Faith and Our
Shared Future. The principles of CST offer us a powerful lens
through which to see and love the world as God does. They are a
blueprint for us in overwhelming times:
Human Dignity: Every one of us is created in the image and
likeness of God.
Common Good: We realize our human dignity in relationship
and community.
Option for the Poor: The moral test of our society is how we
treat our most vulnerable.
Rights and Responsibilities: We all have a fundamental
right to what is needed to live in dignity - life, food, shelter,
health care, education, employment. We also have a respon-
sibility to participate in our public life together.
Role of Government: The state has a positive moral function
to promote human dignity, protect human rights and build the
common good.
Economic Justice: All workers have the right to decent and
fair wages and safe working conditions. No one is allowed to
amass excessive wealth while others lack the basic necessi-
ties of life.
Stewardship of God's Creation: We are called to live in
right relationship with the earth.

the absence of war. Peace is the fruit of justice.

an interdependent world.
