Pastor’s 2 Cents From: Fr. Jim DeBruycker

Time travel intrigues me, as it does many. I would love to travel two hundred years into the

future to see if there is anything left and if there is, to then see what the Church looks like. I

think I have written before about the time capsule we put into the new cornerstone at Saint

Leonard’s. I went on and on about the new America under the leadership of President Kerry.

Apparently, I am not a great prognosticator.

Will there be a Roman Catholic Church we recognize? Who will be the clergy? Will the structure

be the same? Will it be Progressive, Liberal, Conservative, or even have a remnant theology?

I certainly have my opinions, but maybe you can ask President Kerry about them.

Of course, it would be just as interesting to travel back in time 2000 years ago, to be standing

at the sea of Galilee when this itinerant preacher came up to a group of fishermen and invited

them to go on a quest with him, to establish a new kingdom of God.

Did they have a clue of what they were about to get involved in? A couple of years ago, there

was a contest to design a new statue of Saint Patrick. The winner depicted Patrick as a young,

underfed shepherd, a slave to an Irish chieftain, not as a powerful, mitered giant driving the

snakes out of Ireland with his crosier. Many were aghast at this image of their great saint;

where was his power?

We read back into history forgetting that at the start of their careers, saints were not recognized

as people of power. Yet, this little slave boy would convert Ireland with courage and intelligence.

Peter of all people would probably not recognize his image throughout the ages as the

personification of hierarchical power and privilege. He was just happy that despite all of his

failings, the Lord repeatedly forgave him. His power was always his humility to ask for another

chance, to admit his need for God, be it his betrayal at the crucifixion or running away from his

own crucifixion. “Quo Vadis? - Where are you going?” Peter asks Jesus.

Jesus answered Peter and told him he was on his way to be crucified again. Peter knew he

was not walking with Jesus, so with a heavy heart and courage, he turned back to face what

he was running from.

Quo Vadis?

Gym Masses

Presider: Fr. James Cassidy

We welcome our pre-mass speaker,

Doran Schrantz, director of ISAIAH.

ISAIAH is a faith-based organization

of 130 member congregations and 75

community centers across Minnesota,

including St. Joan of Arc. Hundreds

of parishioners are engaged in, and

leaders of, ISAIAH's work for racial and

economic justice. Doran, we are grateful

to have you here and grateful for your

prophetic voice. Please join us after

the 11am mass in the Upper Room for

coffee and conversation about ISAIAH!

Today we hear 15 year old Tara

Brechon accompanied by Tommy

Barbarella, offering a beautiful poem

that sets our hearts to following Jesus

with action and not just words. Our own

Terrie Coats will share an offertory solo.

Welcome all and thank you as always!

Family Mass

Inspired by our gospel about disciple-

ship, three families tell about their SJA

outreach with Mobile Loaves Twin Cities,

the Children’s Choir, and teaching Faith

Formation classes. Thanks to our speak-

ers, Kylie, Jackie, and Pierce Dols,

Kate, Meg, and Sara Stenzel, and Mo

Janzen. Join us in the church at 9:45

or 11:45 for our child-centered liturgies.

All are welcome!

“Your life is a sacred journey...You are on

the path, exactly where you are meant to

be right now." This weekend, we have the op-

portunity to celebrate the upcoming journey of

the Arm In Arm In Africa delegation. The 2019 delegation will

receive the blessing of the SJA community at the 9 and 11am

Gym masses. This will be our 20th delegation to travel to South

Africa and there are 20 individuals in the delegation. We will be

departing on our yearly mission on Feb. 16 and returning on

Mar. 10. I would ask that you remember the delegates and their

families in your thoughts and prayers during the time we are

away. I would also invite you to join us, at least in spirit, by going

to our website at www.aiaia.org. You can now "Like Us" on our

Facebook page, @arminarminafrica. With warm regards, and

gratitude for your ongoing support of Arm In Arm In Africa.

Mental Health Ministry: Please join us in Hospitality Hall on

Monday, Feb. 11, 5:45 - 8pm, as Jillian Simpson,

PsyD., LP, from Mt. Olivet Counseling Center

presents, Trauma and Relationships. Our evening

begins with a light supper. All are welcome for this

free event.

Did you Know? Trauma can have a negative impact on our

relationships. Andrea Brandt, Ph.D., M.F.T., cites four ways in

which this occurs:

1. The False Self: When we bury our emotions we lose touch

with who we really are, because our feelings are an integral

part of us.

2. Victimhood Thinking: Negative self-talk disempowers us and

makes us feel like we have no control over our lives — like

victims.

3. Passive-Aggressiveness: You don't express your feelings

straightforwardly, but since you can't truly suppress anger,

you express your feelings through passive-aggressiveness.

4. Passivity: When we bury our feelings, we bury who we are.

Coalition for Grief Support: On Thursday, Feb. 21, Judy

Young, grief counselor presents, Am I Going Crazy? Please join

us, 6:30 - 8pm, in the Parish Center. The evening begins with

light refreshments followed by a presentation and facilitated

small group sessions. FFI please contact Norine Larson at

952.925.2437 or Sherri Stella at the Parish Center.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will be meeting Tuesday, Feb. 19,

9 - 10:30 in the Geranium Room in the Parish Center. Please

join us for a morning of crocheting/knitting, conversation and

prayer. All are welcome! Our prayer shawl members are open

to teaching new members to knit and crochet. FFI contact

Sherri Stella at the Parish Center.

The Parish Visitor Ministry offers confidential listening, prayer,

communion, and support in times of life challenges or transitions.

Through phone calls and visits, this quiet support is available

to parishioners who cannot join us for worship or would like an

additional long or short term parish connection in the home,

hospital, rehab or care center. FFI contact Sherri at the Parish

Center or Carolyn Dobis at 651.485.2868.
