US defense secretary RobertGates says China's rapidly develop-ing defense capabilities are worri-some to the US. China has madestrides in building a new stealthfighter jet and Washington is alsoconcerned about a new ballisticmissile that could theoretically ex-plode an aircraft carrier nearly2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) outto sea. China has also apparentlybeaten US estimates to developthat weapon.

Gates arrived in Beijing today fortalks about these weapons andother military issues with Chinese

leaders. "They [China] clearly havepotential to put some of our capabil-ities at risk," Gates told reporterstraveling with him to Asia. "We haveto pay attention to them, we have torespond appropriately with our ownprograms." The US has long knownthat China wanted to field a stealth

jet, but development outpaced USintelligence estimates, Gates said.

China is still years behind UScapabilities in radar-evading air-craft, and even by 2015 the USwould still have far more flying thanany other nation in the world, Gatessaid.

China says it does not pose athreat and its military forces arepurely for defense, which in itsdefinition includes deterring Taiwan,a self-governing island that Beijingclaims as its territory, from declaringformal independence. In an appar-ent nod to US calls for more open-ness, China allowed video andpictures of last week's runway testsof its prototype stealth fighter to betaken and posted online. Gates istrying to coax Chinese militaryleaders into more regular discus-sions with the US.The Pentagon is focusing scarcerdefense dollars on ways to counterthe kinds of weapons China is nowbuilding. Gates said recently hewants to spend more on a new long-range nuclear bomber and updated

electronics gear for the Navy thatcould throw an incoming missile offcourse. He will also visit SouthKorea for talks about averting warwith the North, as well as Japan, which is alarmed by Chinese mili-tary moves. The invitation to visitBeijing was a coup for Gates, whoinvited a Chinese counterpart forsimilar talks and a visit to the USnuclear weapons headquarters in2009.

    RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF NEW WEAPONS

Nigeria (AP) -- A newspaper col-umnist critical of Nigeria's late andcurrent president said Sunday thatthe oil-rich nation's secret policeseized his passports when he en-tered the country.

Okey Ndibe, who writes a weeklycolumn on politics for The Sunnewspaper, told The AssociatedPress he believed his brief deten-tion and the passport seizurescame from the government's dis-pleasure over his articles.

The incident also comes as Nige-

rian President Goodluck Jonathanprepares for what could be a tumul-tuous and violent April election in a

nation long familiar to strong-armtactics to muzzle the press.

Ndibe, a U.S. citizen who teach-es at Trinity College in Connecticut, said an immigration officer stoppedhim Saturday night after he arrivedat Lagos' Murtala Muhammed Inter-national Airport. The columnist saidthe immigration official introducedhim to an officer with the secretiveState Security Service, who de-tained him for about two hours ashe made telephones calls.

    The secret policeman ultimately

took Ndibe's U.S. and Nigerianpassports and ordered him to ap-pear for questioning Monday morn-

ing at the agency's Lagos head-quarters. Ndibe said the officeroffered no explanation for his ac-tions.

"I was surprised, but I was not alltogether shocked," Ndibe said.Marilyn Ogar, a spokeswoman forthe State Security Service, did notrespond to a request for comment.Sahara Reporters, a news websitefocused on Nigeria, first reported onNdibe's passports being seized.

Ndibe's columns criticized the2007 election that brought late

President Umaru Yar'Adua to pow-er. Stolen ballot boxes, thuggeryand voter fraud marred the election.

Gates says Beijings development is outpacing intelligence estimates and could put some US capabilities at risk.

To call Islam a religion ofpeace, as we hear ceaseless-ly reiterated, is completelydelusional.

There is a religion of peace inthis world, but its not Islam. Jain-ism actually is a religion of peace. The core principal of Jainism isnonviolence. The crazier you get asa Jain, the less we have to worryabout you. Jain extremists areactually crippled by their pacifism. They cant even take their eyes offthe ground lest they step on an ant.

So youll notice that the problemis NOT religious extremism. Ex-tremism is really not a problem ifyour core beliefs are nonviolent. The problem isnt fundamentalism. The problem with Islamic funda-

mentalism are the fundamentals ofIslam.Take Osama Bin Laden, Khaled

Sheik Mohammad, or Mullah Omar. These guys agree on the nature ofreality and how to live within it. Theproblem is, they are giving a veryplausible version of the faith. Osa-ma Bin Laden is not the Reverend

Jim Jones of the Islamic world. Itwould be wonderful if he was, buthes given a perfectly straightfor-ward version of Islam. You reallyhave to be an acrobat to figure outhow hes distorting the faith. Now ifthose guys were Jain, or Buddhist,or Amish, or Quaker, it would bepatently obvious how they weredistorting their faith. In fact, theirbehavior would be unintelligible. Itis not obvious by the light of Islam, and that is just a fact we have tospeak honestly about.

The belief is that Mohammad gotthe Quran directly from the archan-gel Gabriel in his cave in the 7thcentury. And therefore it is theperfect word of the creator of theuniverse. The consequence is that

we have this single book, which isimagined to be the best book onany subject ever written, never tobe superseded by any human ef-fort, at any point in the future.

Now, this is a problem becausethe Quran is a profoundly mediocrebook. The idea that it is the bestbook written on ANY subject canonly be maintained in a kind of

fantastical intellectual isolation. Thisisolation has actually beenachieved in the Muslim world to anastonishing degree.

The country of Spain translatesmore of the worlds literature andlearning into Spanish every singleyear than the entire Arab world hastranslated into Arabic since the 9thcentury. That is scary. Its scarybecause the contents of the Quranreally offers precious little rationalefor living in a sane and pluralisticglobal civilization. What the Qurandoes give you rationale for is theceaseless worship of a mediocrebeing who has given us this medio-cre book.

And nobody should be speakingmore honestly and more volubly

about this than moderate Muslims.Moderate Muslims have to findsome way to grapple with this fact. But to say Osama Bin Laden isDavid Koresh is just a lie, and its adangerous lie at this point.

Ive walked around aimlessly forforty fortnights, watching cockfightsand praising gods glory at the holes.

I wonder how often the girl on theother side is laughing at me and if itmakes her hate her life a little less. Iwonder which one of us hates ourlife more: s/he who purveys a warmmouth (or anus) for perverts like mewho cant find welcoming warmholes on our own (or for assortedand sordid reasons prefer anony-mous holes), or does my hatredwin? I at least dont have to put abunch of dicks in my mouth on anear-daily basis, but at this point, Iprobably wouldnt mind. Sometimesthis feels like what I imagine a trulyhonest confessional would be likeand its probably the most direct wayto look yourself dead in the eye.

Demons flaggelate and I cum fromthe depths of my wretched soul in awarm and frothy turbo jet stream

ribbon that I want to weave throughher hair.Heres a most revealing confes-

sion: I dont care if the person on theother side is a male or female. WhatI am hoping for is some depravedand soulless vessel who doesntneed the money, (in the most hyper-bolical way, like an heir or Mexicandrug trafficker) but just loves thetaste of my desperate and droopingerection and its subsequent ejection. The money made from the cumsip-ping would be donated to a worthycause, or at the very least be usedto hire someone (preferably an im-ported transsexual with an extra orexaggerated limb) to wipe his/her

ass with the money while he/she(preferably of the hershey heshevariety) is, of course, shitting brightly

and violently, concomitantly sur-rounding my four narrow and har-rowing inches with steamy and sali-vary salvation. Androgynous bowelsare emptied to make room for theimminent and immense amount ofmy surrendered soul that will bereleased from the prison of my cellsand absorbed in an orgasmoticcrossing through her most permea-ble membraine. This would be aglory-hole-in-one.

As we get older, taking care ofour bodies naturally becomes moreof a priority. Especially calcium

intake to build strong bones andprevent osteoporosis. Calcium is amineral that our body needs forbuilding and maintaining bonesand teeth, blood clotting, the trans-mission of nerve impulses, and theregulation of the heart's rhythm.Ninety-nine percent of the calciumin the human body is stored in thebones and teeth. The remaining 1percent is found in the blood andother tissues.

Bone is living tissue, and muchlike the other tissues in our body itis always changing. In healthyindividuals who get enough calci-um and physical activity, boneproduction exceeds bone destruc-tion up to about age 30. After that, destruction typically exceeds pro-duction.

But how do we tap into thisessential mineral? What is the bestsource? Most people automatically

assume cows milk; drink the rec-ommended three glasses a day forstronger healthier bones right? Milkis actually just one of several

sources of calcium and there aresome important reasons why cow'smilk may not be the best source at

all. Getting the proper calciumintake from cow's milk is supposedto protect us from osteoporosis, however, growing evidence isshowing just the opposite. In factsome researchers single out dairymilk as the biggest dietary cause ofosteoporosis because more thanany other food it depletes the finitereserve of bone-making cells in thebody. Furthermore, the calciumand phosphorus in milk feed nano-bacteria, causing calcification andcancer.

According to a 12-year Harvardstudy of 78,000 women, those whodrank milk three times a day actu-ally broke more bones than womenwho rarely drank milk. Similarly, a1994 study in Sydney, Australia, showed that higher dairy productconsumption was associated withincreased fracture risk: those withthe highest dairy consumption had

double the risk of hip fracture com-pared to those with the lowestconsumption.

Dr. Amy Lanou with the Physi-cians Committee for ResponsibleMedicine, USA says: There is a

compelling argument that todayspasteurized milk, in all its guises, has virtually no redeeming featuresat all, and serves only to causedisease and poor health. By simplyswitching from dairy to non-dairymilk we will make a dramatic andlong-lasting improvement to ourhealth.

Adequate calcium intake isessential and can be found in soy, almond and rice milk, green leafyvegetables such as spinach andkale, and some legumes. There'salso endless varieties of supple-ments. To ensure that 95 percentof the population gets this muchcalcium, the National Academy ofSciences established the followingrecommended intake levels:

    * 1,000 milligrams/day for thoseage 19 to 50

    * 1,200 milligrams/day for thoseage 50 or over

    * 1,000 milligrams/day for preg-nant or lactating adult women

Most Americans have no real under-

standing of the operation of the interna-tional money lenders. The accounts ofthe Federal Reserve System have neverbeen audited. It operates outside thecontrol of Congress and manipulatesthe credit of the United States" Sen.Barry Goldwater (Rep. AR)

Ron Paul states the obvious in the

Congressional Record, "Though the Fed-eral Reserve policy harms the average

American, it benefits those in a position totake advantage of the cycles in monetarypolicy. The main beneficiaries are thosewho receive access to artificially inflatedmoney and/or credit before the inflationaryeffects of the policy impact the entire econ-omy. Federal Reserve policies also benefitbig spending politicians who use the inflat-ed currency created by the Fed to hide thetrue costs of the welfare-warfare state. It istime for Congress to put the interests ofthe American people ahead of the specialinterests and their own appetite for biggovernment. Abolishing the Federal Re-serve will allow Congress to reassert itsconstitutional authority over monetarypolicy. The United States Constitutiongrants to Congress the authority to coinmoney and regulate the value of the cur-

rency. The Constitution does not giveCongress the authority to delegatecontrol over monetary policy to a cen-tral bank. Furthermore, the Constitutioncertainly does not empower the federalgovernment to erode the American stand-ard of living via an inflationary monetarypolicy.

Throughout its nearly 100-year history, the Federal Reserve has presided over thenear-complete destruction of the UnitedStates dollar. Since 1913 the dollar haslost over 95% of its purchasing power,

aided and abetted by the Federal Re-serve's loose monetary policy. How longwill we as a Congress stand idly by whilehard-working Americans see their savingseaten away by inflation? Only big-spending politicians and politically favoredbankers benefit from inflation.

Serious discussion of proposals to over-see the Federal Reserve is long over-

due. I have been a longtime proponent ofmore effective oversight and auditing ofthe Fed, but I was far from the first Con-gressman to advocate these types of pro-posals. Esteemed former members of theBanking Committee such as ChairmenWright Patman and Henry B. Gonzaleswere outspoken critics of the Fed and itslack of transparency.

Since its inception, the Federal Reservehas always operated in the shadows, without sufficient scrutiny or oversight of itsoperations. While the conventional excuseis that this is intended to reduce the Fed'ssusceptibility to political pressures, thereality is that the Fed acts as a foil for thegovernment. Whenever you question theFed about the strength of the dollar, theywill refer you to the Treasury, and viceversa. The Federal Reserve has, on theone hand, many of the privileges of gov-

ernment agencies, while retaining benefitsof private organizations, such as beinginsulated from Freedom of Information Actrequests.

The Federal Reserve can enter intoagreements with foreign central banks andforeign governments, and the GAO isprohibited from auditing or even seeingthese agreements. Why should a govern-ment-established agency, whose policeforce has federal law enforcement powers, and whose notes have legal tender statusin this country, be allowed to enter into

agreements with foreign powers and for-eign banking institutions with no over-sight? Particularly when hundreds ofbillions of dollars of currency swaps havebeen announced and implemented, theFed's negotiations with the EuropeanCentral Bank, the Bank of InternationalSettlements, and other institutions shouldface increased scrutiny, most especially

because of their significant effect on for-eign policy. If the State Department wereable to do this, it would be characterizedas a rogue agency andbrought to heel, and if aprivate individual did thishe might face prosecutionunder the Logan Act, yetthe Fed avoids both fates.More importantly, theFed's funding facilitiesand its agreements withthe Treasury should bereviewed. The Treasury'ssupplementary financingaccounts that fund Fedfacilities allow the Treas-ury to funnel money toWall Street without GAOor Congressional over-sight. Additional funding

facilities, such as thePrimary Dealer CreditFacility and the TermSecurities Lending Facili-ty, allow the Fed to keepfinancial asset pricesartificially inflated andsubsidize poorly perform-ing financial firms.

The Federal ReserveTransparency Act wouldeliminate restrictions onGAO audits of the Federal

Reserve and open Fed operations to en-

hanced scrutiny. We hear officials con-stantly lauding the benefits of transparencyand especially bemoaning the opacity ofthe Fed, its monetary policy, and its fund-ing facilities. By opening all Fed opera-tions to a GAO audit and calling for suchan audit to be completed by the end of2010, the Federal Reserve Transparency

Act would achieve much-needed transpar-ency of the Federal Reserve. I urge mycolleagues to support this bill.

Since the creation of the Federal Re-serve, middle and working-class Ameri-cans have been victimized by a boom-and-bust monetary policy. In addition, most

Americans have suffered a steadily erod-ing purchasing power because of the Fed-eral Reserve's inflationary policies. Thisrepresents a real, if hidden, tax imposedon the American people.

From the Great Depression, to the stag-flation of the seventies, to the currenteconomic crisis caused by the housingbubble, every economic downturn sufferedby this country over the past century canbe traced to Federal Reserve policy. TheFed has followed a consistent policy offlooding the economy with easy money, leading to a misallocation of resources andan artificial "boom" followed by a recessionor depression when the Fed-created bub-ble bursts.

With a stable currency, American ex-porters will no longer be held hostage toan erratic monetary policy. Stabilizing thecurrency will also give Americans newincentives to save as they will no longerhave to fear inflation eroding their savings. Those members concerned about increas-ing America's exports or the low rate ofsavings should be enthusiastic supportersof this legislation.

    Though the Federal Reserve policy

harms the average American, it benefitsthose in a position to take advantage of thecycles in monetary policy. The main bene-

ficiaries are those who receive access to

artificially inflated money and/or creditbefore the inflationary effects of the policyimpact the entire economy. Federal Re-serve policies also benefit big spendingpoliticians who use the inflated currencycreated by the Fed to hide the true costs ofthe welfare-warfare state. It is time forCongress to put the interests of the Ameri-can people ahead of special interests andtheir own appetite for big government.

Abolishing the Federal Reserve willallow Congress to reassert its constitution-al authority over monetary policy. TheUnited States Constitution grants to Con-gress the authority to coin money andregulate the value of the currency. TheConstitution does not give Congress theauthority to delegate control over monetarypolicy to a central bank. Furthermore, theConstitution certainly does not empowerthe federal government to erode the Amer-ican standard of living via an inflationarymonetary policy.

In fact, Congress' constitutional man-date regarding monetary policy should onlypermit currency backed by stable com-modities such as silver and gold to beused as legal tender. Therefore, abolishingthe Federal Reserve and returning to aconstitutional system will enable Americato return to the type of monetary systemenvisioned by our nation's founders: onewhere the value of money is consistentbecause it is tied to a commodity such asgold. Such a monetary system is the basisof a true free market economy.

I urge my colleagues to stand up forworking Americans by putting an end tothe manipulation of the money supplywhich erodes Americans' standard of liv-ing, enlarges big government, and enrich-es well-connected elites, by cosponsoringmy legislation to abolish the Federal Re-

serve.-Transcript from speech given on Housefloor by Ron Paul (Rep. TX).
