New tourism committee formed to raise greater awareness of Saint LuciaSAINT LUCIA’S Ministry of Tourism (SLTA) has launched a new committee with the aim of establishing a commonplatform for best practice in sustainable and competitive tourism.

Inaugural meetings have taken place with 17 stakeholders, including SLTA, drawn from private and publicsectors involved in the tourism industry. Among the priorities for the National Tourism Advisory Committee aretackling the high cost of airfares to the island; strengthening linkages across the tourism sector; increasingincentives to small businesses; and raising greater awareness of Saint Lucia as a tourism destination. The plan isfor the committee to evolve into the island’s tourism council that will act as a sounding board and point ofdialogue between the government, statutory bodies and the tourism industry.

2019 is a special year as it marks the 40th anniversary of independence for Saint Lucia, and plans are underway tocelebrate this milestone, including the opening of a new racetrack in the south of the island which will see its firstrace in February to mark the occasion.

BARBADOS REPORTED strong tourist arrivals in 2018, asuccessful ‘Year of Culinary Experiences’ campaign andrevealed that the new focus for 2019 is to be the ‘Year ofWellness and Soft Adventure’.

Newly released figures from Barbados TourismMarketing Inc. (BTMI) show that the UK maintained itsplace as the biggest producing market of visitors to thedestination in the first half of 2018, with 150,225 arrivals –an increase of 3% for the same period in 2017. More widely, the island is continuing its path of positive growth andattracted a total of 465,516 stayover visitors for the periodof January to August 2018 (2.6% year-on-year).

William ‘Billy’ Griffith, CEO of the BTMI, said, “There’spressure to keep improving and to remain competitive aswe continue to grow our brand. We must be strategic inour efforts, and now, more than ever, we must focus onour key relationships. Which is why over the next sixmonths, you will see us working even more closely withour partners to ensure these trends continue through theupcoming winter period and beyond.”

In December 2017, the destination joined with theGrantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) to welcomeVirgin Atlantic’s twice-weekly service from Heathrow toBarbados, which has recommenced for the winter 2018/19season. Newcomer Thomas Cook has recommenced its

direct weekly service from Gatwick this winter season, which ran successfully through winter 2017/2018.

In addition to the increased airlift, the island’s newattractions have played a role in boosting 2018 arrivalnumbers. Griffiths explained: “We are mindful of thecontinuous need for refreshing and invigorating ourproduct offerings while preserving the elements of theBarbados experience that keep our repeat guest rate sohigh. New attractions like Rihanna Drive and NikkiBeach, or even Hugo’s restaurant, go a long way inshowing that Barbados is committed to maintaining itsposition as a superior holiday destination.”

Following on from the success of last year, 2019 hasbeen hailed as the ‘Year of Wellness and Soft Adventure’.With a balanced lifestyle becoming a priority for manypeople, Barbados is positioning itself as the perfectdestination to achieve this; whether it is treating oneself toa relaxed week in a luxurious spa hotel, or finding abalance of mind, body and soul through hiking the island’seast coast. The destination can offer diving, sailing or water skiing on azure waters or a quietening of the mindwith yoga and meditation complemented by a backdrop of unspoilt beaches, lush green hills and pockets of charm and history. To find out more about go to www.visitbarbados.org

Sell the Seychelles stress-free2019 COULD very well be ‘The Year of Travel Made Easy’ with more holidaymakerstaking advantage of increasing accessibility to get off grid while looking to travel in away that’s stress-free. Despite its distance and geographic layout, the Seychelles ispositioning itself as a destination that offers these benefits.

British Airways launched direct flights from London last year, with other airlinesincreasing the frequency of their services – upon arrival, holidaymakers won’t have toworry as travelling between islands has become easier too. Most locals speak English,so getting around is hassle-free, and extra selling points for agents to highlight topotential clients are no visa or vaccination requirements.

With sustainably now front of mind for more travellers, environmentally consciouscustomers may like to hear that the country has agreed to preserve 210,000sq.km ofocean (almost the size of Great Britain) to clear some of its national debt – the firstagreement of its kind in the world. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio's foundation donated $1mtowards funding the debt swap and tourism and fishing activities are being restricted toprevent damage to aquatic life. Last year, the island nation implemented measures totackle plastic pollution and from this month a further environmental milestone will bereached with the ban on the importation of single-use plastic straws.

Additionally, thanks to its location, the destination sees a perpetual summer makingit a good destination to suggest to clients on the hunt for the sun year-round.Visit seychelles.travel for more information.

Feeling ‘So Sri Lanka’ as tourism bureauentices millennial experience seekersTHE SRI Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) hasproposed a new brand identity, under the creative platform‘So Sri Lanka’.

Grounded in the premise that Sri Lanka is more than justa destination but a feeling, the campaign will targetmillennial travellers who select holiday destinations basedon what they can hope to experience.

The minister of Tourism and Wildlife, VasanthaSenanayake said: “The launch of the So Sri Lanka brand isnot only exhilarating – it’s the beginning of a new era. Weenvisage that tourism will flourish to be the most significantsector contributing to our economy – that’s the goal weaspire to reach in the next few years.

“It is also important mentioning that this is the first timein history that Sri Lanka tourism has worked towardsbuilding a strategic digital-first perspective. ‘So Sri Lanka’ isan amplifier brand that supports and engages typicalmillennial travel exploration; this is important in view of thestatistic that in 2020, 50% of travel revenue will be spent bymillennials, and Asia is a millennial favourite – so we arecommitted to making Sri Lanka future-savvy and a vibrantlyrelevant destination going forward.”

To drive awareness of the new brand platform, the SLTPBis partnering with award-winning wildlife producer, NicolaBrown, to create a first of its kind film shot from theviewpoint of Sri Lanka’s rich and diverse wildlife. The full-length film will be released in early 2019.Agents can view a teaser trailer of the film atwww.Srilanka.travel or on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.
