FATHER JARETT’S CATHOLIC Q & A

If I go to a funeral and a daily mass both in the same day, can I receive communion at both services? Canon 917 of the Code of Canon Law states, “A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the Eucharistic celebration in which the person participates.” Therefore, to answer the question, yes, communion can be received more than once in a day, if an individual participates in a full Eucharistic celebration. For example, if you go to Sunday mass and then attend a church dedication ceremony later that same day you could receive the Eucharist at both services. However, as the canon states, an individual “can receive it a second time,” implying that we should not receive the Eucharist more than twice in one day. As with any gift, the more frequently we are permitted to “use it” the easier it is to take for granted how extraordinary the gift really is. It is so easy to approach communion with thousands of other things on our minds or even to approach with the wrong motivation altogether. For example, the temptation to want to receive Communion twice in a day only because we don’t want to be the only ones left sitting in the pew. What might people think about us if we remain in the pew? Let us pray that we might never take for granted the invaluable gift we have been given in the opportunity to receive our Lord truly present to us in the Eucharist; and the gift to do so frequently.

A Family Perspective …by Bud Ozar Today’s gospel tells us “all Jerusalem” was upset because “King Herod was deeply troubled.” A similar ripple effect happens in families; one person’s negative attitude can affect the whole family. If you want a peaceful and joyful home, it must start with you. Be peaceful and joyful!

JANUARY 8TH, 2017 ~ THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most

quoted passages in the Bible -- Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the verse. Little Bobby was excited about the task, but he just couldn't remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line. On the day the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Bobby was so nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, "The Lord is my shepherd . . . and that's all I need to know!"
