Historically January has been a
month when the Church invites us to
focus on vocations to the priest-
hood and the religious life. Maybe
that’s because January is the
month when the priest shortage is
experienced most intensely –
especially in Minnesota. Many
Minnesotan priests like to, or need
to, take time off in January to spiritually and physically
recharge after the busy Advent and Christmas seasons.
I am contributing to the January priest shortage this year. I am
gone and leading a pilgrimage to Rome and Southern Italy.
It was a commitment I made with my previous parish before I
knew I would be reassigned. You can be sure that I will be
praying for you all at many of the sacred sites. Maybe at the
gelato stands and pizza shops too. Sacred prayer, pizza, and
gelato – those are the sort of things my battery needs to re-
charge.
Arrivederci – a presto!
