    Ilearned to shoot and bowhunt

with a succession of unremark-able, cheap or second-hand tra-ditional bows (if solid fiberglass canbe considered traditional), first a 15pound Bear Red Fox fiberglassrecurve, then a 30 pound Indian Archery fiberglass longbow (which Iactually killed scads of rabbits andcarp with) and finally a nondescript45 pound Shim-Bo laminatedrecurve with ambidextrous, stapled-on plastic handle/arrow shelves, which I killed my first couple deer with. Im reminded of Dana GarveysAngry Old Man skit during pastSaturday Night Live WeekendUpdates, ranting of how things usedto be better in the old days when I say,And I liked them just fine!

I cant begin to imagine what itslike to be a youngster with a passionfor archery today, to be privy to allthese terrific youth bows suddenly and readily available. If I were eight or10 or 12 again there would be noquestion what Id be begging forcome Christmas; even if pinning down an exact model might provehighly challenging. There are sudden-ly so many awesome bows for smallpeople to choose from choices canprove downright confusing.

Todays youth dont have to investmonths of concerted practice learn-ing to hit a target with consistency, afull year of utter frustration in thequest for their very first rabbit, missshots at dozens of tediously-stalked(and scarce) deer before finally con-necting on their first. In todays worldeverything is short-cutted, whichcome to think of it, considering videogames and organized sports and allthe other distractions vying for young peoples attention these days, maybethis is a good thing. There are still very basic youth bows available normal-ly for the youngest shooters, frommakers such as Martin and Bear

Archery but the very best youth

compounds essentially have all thebells and whistles of adult modelsfrom the same major companies, including built-in accuracy and con-sistency, simply scaled down tosmaller dimensions. This makes suc-cess on at least targets almostassured, instilling continued interestand allowing graduation to biggerthings such as big-game hunting.

Ive always been proud of the factI killed my first deer a mule deer doe at age 14 and all on my own, buttoday friends kids are successfully arrowing bucks at nine and 10 years

old. This is due in large part to better,

more efficient youth compoundmodels (and arrows and broadheadsto match).

The biggest selling point intodays quality youth compounds is ahuge degree of adjustability. As any-one knows, kids can grow like sum-mer weeds following summer rain. They outgrow clothes and shoes on aseemingly monthly basis.Thoughtfully-designed youth com-pounds allow kids to grow all they want without making their birthday or Christmas bow obsolete inside six months. Most are designed so they

can theoretically serve a kid from the

The Hoyt Ruckus isoffered in 10 to 20, 20 to 30, 30 to 40and 40 to 50 pound draw weightranges to offer top performance intheir respective configurations.

Eldredge also had this to add, AtHoyt were deeply committed togrowing archery and bowhunting through our youth. Theres nothing better than getting kids involved inarchery and seeing them succeed.Ive never met a kid who didnt lovearchery once they gave it a try. One of

the keys to keeping them interested isproviding quality, high-performanceequipment allowing them to shootaccurately and consistently. Hoytsnew Ruckus is a perfect example of that bow. Its loaded with technolo-gies such as parallel split limbs, TecLite riser, AlphaShox, Fuse customstrings and more, but also allows ahuge range of draw length adjust-ment so it can grow with a kid.

Martin Archery509-529-2554 www.martinarchery.comMartin has long had the future of

Mathews, Inc.608-269-2728 www.mathewsinc.comNot every child can be a star

quarterback or gymnast, saysCorrine Yohann, Mathews Inc.

Marketing CommunicationsSpecialist, but every child can shootarchery and excel at it. Putting a bow in the hands of a child ignites theirfine motor skills and coordination, attention to detail, listening skills andmost importantly their self-esteem.Ive seen the most introverted childlight up and break out of their shell tobecome a more confident individual when a bow was in their handandthat is worth everything to Mathews, our CEO Matt McPherson andmyself.

Tim Strickland, host of Stricklands Archery Adventure televi-sion show, adds to those sentiments. In the 90s it became apparent lessand less kids were going afield. Theage of the computer had arrived andthe kids were the target for futuresales. Many people knew something needed to be done to get the youthout of doors and in the field so they could come face-to-face with actualreality rather than perceived truth. Inshort, the reality of what God createdin comparison with what man discov-ered.

The NASP program has createdthe potential for a beginning for mil-lions of youth to be grounded withthe experience that in many casesimpresses on youth feelings of accomplishment they have never felt

before. The great advantage is how well the positive instruction fromNASP works elsewhere. The trail fromNASP to the out of doors is a greatsuccess. A positive increase of youthlicenses is proof. Not long ago virtual-ly all states had low numbers of youthlicense sales. A positive increase hasnow replaced that.

Largely because of NASP thefuture for archery looks solid. All thefolks who were instrumental in start-ing NASP and those who keep it run-ning are owed more than can be paidfor the positive influence NASP has tooffer for our youth, Strickland con-cluded.

Mathews Genesis bows really deserve a lot of credit for setting theentire youth-bow movement intomotion. With its simple but effectivesystem that eliminates letoff on light-draw bows it allows many archers toshoot a single bow, as well as grow without rendering their bow obsolete. The result is a bow that accommo-dates draw lengths from 15 to 30inches. Adjustable from 10 to 20pounds, a Genesis set at 20 poundsproduces energy comparable to a 35pound recurve. The Genesis is offeredin eight colors, including BlueRaspberry, Key Lime, Wild Berry, RedCherry, Lemon Yellow, Camouflage,Pink Lemonade and Orange. TheGenesis is also available in starter kitsthat include five aluminum arrows,color-coordinated belt quiver andarm guard, two target faces and aninformative owners manual.

Of course Mathews is not one torest on its laurels. The Ignition isMathews first contribution to theperformance youth-bow market. This

A generous 6.5 inch bracemakes it forgiving, with a 65 percentletoff to make it fast. Its available indraw lengths from 22 to 26 inches

An example of its impressive speed is illustrated by a26 inch draw set at 50 pounds, pro-ducing IBO ratings of 278 fps. Itsoffered in Realtree Hardwoods HD,Black Cherry and Blueberry finishes. Each bow is sold in a set draw length, though Mathews offers an affordablecam exchange program allowing cus-tomers to upgrade their bow as they grow. This assures maximum perfor-

mance at each draw length, but doesmake it a bit less convenient thanmany standard youth models.

    Mission Archery608-269-2728 www.missionarchery.comMathews sister company

Mission is a relative newcomer to

archery but has been making quick converts with high quality at afford-able prices. The new Craze com-pound also happens to offer, perhaps, the widest range of adjustability intodays youth market though thisbow easily serves the average adultshooter. Its draw length adjustablefrom 19 to 30 inches and 15 to 70pounds of draw weight, allowing it tonot only last a young archer a poten-tial lifetime, but fit nearly any cus-tomer that walks through your door, without the need to change limbs orcams. Draw weight increases in pro-portion to draw length, so set at itsshortest 19 inch draw length pulling weights of 15 to 46 pounds are possi-ble; set at 30 inches 33 to 70 pounds.Seventy pounds of draw weight canbe achieved at draw lengths as low as25 inches. This is accomplishedthrough an easily-adjusted, rotating-

module system without a bow press. More impressive yet, set at 28inches draw length this 3.75 pound,7.5 inch braced bow yields an amaz-ing 306 fps. It produces this kind of performance at both ends of theadjustability spectrum. Its covered inLost Camo AT.

Our retailers say the Craze is

perfect for their business, says JonDuMars, Director of Sales for Mission. They dont have to stock variousdraw lengths and it can fit just aboutanyone who walks through theirdoor. With 40 pounds of (weight)adjustment and 306 fps speed, its aneasy sell to anyone thats looking forhigh performance on a budget.
