The operational results for November contain some goodnews and some bad news. The good news is thatIncomeexceeded expectations. The bad news is thatExpensesalsoexceeded expectations. Combining the two sides, theChurch recognized a net ($2,042) budgetary shortfall for

November. While not desirable, it simply eroded somefavorable results from previous months. As we head intothe final month of 2013, we need to watch both sides ofthe equation IncomeandExpenses to ensure we endthe yearon Plan. I am confident that, with your help, wewill do just that.

MISSION PROJECT HOLIDAY BOXES FOR OUR TROOPS

It takes three long months in order for our HolidayBoxes for the Troops project to reach completion.25 boxes were shipped to Afghanistan and Kuwaiton December 9th, most headed for the far remotemountainous areas of Afghanistan. Because of thesuccess of our please sign Christmas Cards cam-paign, a minimum of 25 cards were placed in eachbox. I know that will in itself place a lot of smileson the faces of our guys/gals so far from home. Each box contained toiletries, magazines, games, socks, t-shirts and snacks. Many thanks to the Dea-cons and everyone else who donated various items

for the boxes and/or funds to help cover shippingcosts. Attached is a picture of a group of soldiersand airmen opening up their boxes. Just look at thesmiles on those faces; makes all the hard workworthwhile.

Its a brand new year and our church is just beginning to celebrateour 40th year as a congregation. We are busy with activities soyou have many choices for being involved. I wanted to paraphrasesome of the leaders notes from the advent devotional provided thisyear. We join small groups, thinking about what we get fromthem, forgetting what God gets from our gatherings. When we gettogether to talk about Him and honor His name God is delighted.Isnt it amazing that these times are so special God calls for ascrapbook or book of remembrance to be put together for Himof what people say. He counts those who gather as his specialpossession.

Then those who revered the Lord spoke with one

another. The Lord took note and listened, and a

book of remembrance was written before him of

those who revered the Lord and thought on his name.

They shall be mine says the Lord of hosts, my special

possession on the day when I act. Malachi 3:1617

Jesus also spoke of the special blessing there is for just the two or

three who gather in his Name. (Matthew 18:20)

For where two or three are gathered in my name,

    I am there among them.

So this month, or any month, Id like to encourage you to try at-tending one of our three circles. You dont need to make a com-mitment to every meeting and you will be welcomed wheneveryou can come. It is a time of friendship and sharing concerns aswell as a biblical lesson. All are welcome but not required to jointhe discussion. Our Bible Study for this Year is called An Abid-ing Hope.

Martha Baxter, leader of the Afternoon Circle provided this ac-count for the December meeting of the afternoon circle.

Our precious afternoon circle met on the first Tuesday of De-

cember in the activity room beside the assisted living chapel of

the Fountains Retirement Residence. By one oclock, seven la-

dies were gathered in a circle to enjoy the good news from thescriptures.

Mary Lou Dresser presented several Christmas articles. We

were led to decipher the tune The Twelve Days of Christmas

and to learn how Christians survive during hardships.

The Bible lesson was on the Old Testament rules for honoring a

good harvest. In Deuteronomy is listed the people to invite the

family, the servants, the Levites, the aliens, the orphans, and the

widowsto their Feast of tabernacles, the name given to the fal

harvest feast. Had the Pilgrims followed these rules for their

feast that thanked God for a good harvest?

If you are interested in attending an afternoon circle, please call

    Marty Baxter, 480-837-3275.

A Christian can never be raging with hatred, intent on revenge,grim-faced without mercy or forgiveness. No, a Christian will revealsincerity through and through, throbbing with compassion and love, quick to smile and laugh, and always checking to make sure the

spirit of Christ in in him or her. Christ in us is the hope of glory (seeColossians 1:27, NRSV).

Our new study ON THE WAY. . .Nearing Home: Life, Faith, and Finishing Wella book by Billy Graham

Billy Graham begins this fascinating book with this: All my life I was taught how to die as a Christian but no one evertaught me how I ought to live in the years before I die. I wish they had because I am an old man now, and believe me,

    its not easy.

In typically simple, straightforward, yet faithful fashion the 95-year-old Graham then sets out to fill this void, sharing hisexperience of aging, his expectations for death, and his anticipation of life beyond with eloquent honesty. Growing oldhas been the greatest surprise of my life, he says. I would have never guessed what God had in store for me, and I knowthat as I am nearing home, He will not forsake me the last mile of the way.

Come join Pastor Bill as we explore the realities of life as we grow older as well as the hope and fulfillment and evenjoy that can be ours once we learn to look at these years from Gods point of view and discover His strength to sustain usevery day.

Class runs for 7 Wednesday evenings beginning on Jan. 15th. Join us for a homemade meal and homegrown fellowshipfrom 5:45-6:30 pm and stay for class from 6:30-7:45pm. Youll want to read along in the book which is availablethru the church office for $17.

ganic unity of belief and behavior is

damaged in any way, we are incapable

of living out the full humanity for which

we were created. This is the wayEugene H. Peterson introduces the Bookof Ephesians in his version of the Bible,The Message. We plan to start a study of Ephesians onSunday, January 19thcontinuing for aperiod of six weeks. As you may know,

the Sabbath Day Bible Study is for anhour from 10:15 to 11:15 in the AdultCenter. CLAF graciously provides lightrefreshments to go with coffee. Thoseparticipants who would like to attend thecasual worship service at 11:15 can cer-tainly be excused from the Bible Studyin time to do so.There will be ample opportunity to askquestions, express personal perspectives, and have an open discussion of thescriptures. Ephesians is Pauls letter tothe church in Ephesus. It may also have

been intended for other churches aswell. Ephesus was an important coastalcity ranking in importance with Alexan-dria in Egypt and Antioch in Syria.Ephesians presents a picture of Godsplan and the role and mission of thechurch and life within it. We will ex-plore how we fit into Gods plan and ourrole and mission in Fountain Hills. If you have an interest in learning more

from Bible Study, please join us eachSunday, starting January 19that 10:15in the Adult Center. We welcome

    your participation.John Bivens

The Environment ofour Faith CommunityYes, God has designed usto live and be formed incommunity. We are to ex-perience Him in ways thatmany times can only happenin close proximity to eachother. FHPC is a beautifulloving and gracing commu-

nity to create an environment for parents and chil-dren to be equipped and discipled; to celebrate Godand His faithfulness; to bring worship through bothtraditions for a childs identity and heart responsefor deep change. Our love for each other reflectsthe love we have been given from God.

One can tell a lot about a church by the way theycare for children, families, elderly and those withspecial needs. We are in a growing time and al-though parents are the primary ones to discipletheir children, we are here to come alongside of them in this holy endeavor. Ourbaptismal vows echo this!

Why would God bring more families untilwe can offer ministry to and with childrenand families? Thank you for those whohave taken the risk to step into unknown

territory to join parents and grand parentsin shaping lives of faith. We need morepeople to do so now. Lets take it to thenext level! God is faithful... let us continueto walk with Him, with children and withtheir families.

Opportunities to learn and be formed withchildren and family available. Commit-ment to children not to a program re-quired. Ministry done in teams so that youmay select a schedule and rotation that worksfor you. Contact Debby to pray and discern

    Mens FellowshipMens FellowshipMens FellowshipMens Fellowship

Mens FellowshipAs most of you already know, the Mens Fellowship at

FHPC has always been a rather informal organization. For most of its twelve year existence it has avoided hav-ing a formal organization structure. The original goal wasto simply have monthly breakfast meetings so men of thischurch could meet for an hour or two of, well, fellowship.Sometimes we had a pre-planned program and sometimeswe would simply eat and sort of wing it insofar as theagenda was concerned. Over the years we did adopt someprograms that have become traditional parts of our churchlife. Most notable of these are the annual SweetheartsBrunch and an annual Worship Service conducted bymale members of FHPC. Additionally, Mens Fellowshipprovided ushers for some Worship Services, crews for

periodic campus clean-up days and volunteers to takefood donations to Extended Hands Food Bank each week.It also does all the outdoor Christmas decorations on thecampus each year.Participation has always been strictly voluntary. Anymale, from teenage and up, is welcome to attend ourmeetings and is encouraged to volunteer to help with anyof our projects. We do not maintain membership rolls, but we do maintain a list of those who have participatedin some way in the past. We make a special effort tomake those people aware of future events.Recently, we came to the conclusion that we should for-malize our organization structure to the extent that we atleast had a clearly identified leader. So, for the next year,Norm Collins has volunteered to be the Moderator ofMens Fellowship at FHPC. As such, he will be the con-tact point for Mens Fellowship and he will be responsibleto coordinate the staffing, planning and promoting of fu-ture events. Obviously, if this is to work out well, Normwill need volunteers to assume the leadership role forspecific events/projects.(NOTE: An announcement of some near term futureevents appears elsewhere in this bulletin)In closing we want to invite all males in FHPC to be a

part of this Fellowship. As you consider this, remember,

our emphasis is still on Fellowship and we continue to

    abhor too much organizational structure.

    Announcements of Coming Events

Saturday, January 11, 2014A breakfast will be held in the Fellowship Center at 9:00a.m. Any male who attends our church is certainly wel-come. Bringing a friend from our community would be awonderful way to reach out to our community.Past participants will be contacted by phone so we canhave an estimate of how many will attend. Others wantingto participate should call Norm Collins at 480-860-1273.We would love to see some new faces.Following breakfast there will be a very short meeting andthen we will take down the Campus Christmas decorations.

Sunday, January 26, 2014The Worship Service on January 26 will be conducted by

the Mens Fellowship. This service will be the product ofan overall design by John Bivens and a music programdesign by Roy Nickel. These two gentlemen have success-fully collaborated on previous all Mens Fellowship Sun-days and we fully expect this one to measure up to theirnormal standards.

Saturday, February 8, 2014The Annual Sweethearts Brunch will be held at 10:00 a.m.in the Fellowship Center on this date. Specific informationon ticket sales and pricing will be provided in weekly wor-ship services bulletins in January. This is probably the biggest socialevent of the year by the Mens

Fellowship, for FHPC. It wouldbehoove all you men to keep thisdate in mind and to make sure youdont disappoint your Sweetheart.

General InformationIf you have questions about theabove events or about the FPHCMens Fellowship, please callNorm Collins (489-860-1273)

    Happy New Year from the

Music Ministry staff, the Cele-bration Singers, CelebrationRingers, Committed, Celebra-tion Youth, Pearwood Record-ers and Hilltop! We have lotsto present this new season, andI look forward to all we can offertoward enhancing the worship

    experience of thischurch.

I certainly want to thank all of those involved in theMusic Ministry for their fine achievement in puttingforth such a great quality of music this past Christ-mas Season. To be able to move the choir into thedirection of greater choral works has been sucha wonderful experience. There are so many fine mu-sicians within our ministry, Singers and Ringers andinstrumentalists, alike. It's a privilege to workwith them. I'd also like to thank our team of la-dies who took on the project of selecting the scarfcolors, fabric, and design, along with coordinating thetie colors for the men, which dresses our choir in anelegant style for special presentations. Helen Quig-ley, Susan Phillips and Arlene Olsen all scouted thefabric stores and narrowed down the choices, andwith the choir's choice of fabric and color, gave thematerial to Violet Weider, who did the seamstress

work. They turned out beautifully!Working with the Youth for the Christmas Pageant

during the Family Christmas Eve Service wasgreat! The whole service of musicians was put on bythe youth of our church. They are becoming suchfine musicians! The event of a pageant duringChristmas Eve dates back throughmany generations, and I think the experience is onewhich was enjoyed by our children, and the children

who came to visit, as well as the congregation whowere able to delight in the presentation. I hope to

continue this as a new tradition in our church. Itworks so well for their young spirits to participateand contribute to the experience in worship. Our Second Service, "Home By Another Way" alsooffered a wonderful Christmas experience with alessons and carol style presenting some of thenewer Christmas Songs along side traditional Christ-mas Hymns, accompanied by Christmas Scriptureand Christmas Readings. We are fortunate to havethe musicians of Hilltop creating the kind of profes-sional sound that works so well when creating thekind of atmosphere necessary within a service whichoffers such a unique and enriching experience wor-

ship style for all those who attend. Now, let's look forward to the entertain-ment developing for the Jan. 12 celebration of ourChurch's 40th year. Wow! I know the entertain-ment will be fun, unique and somewhatpresentable, with singing, poetry reading, fiddle playing, banjopicking, jug blowing, and the like, all for your enter-tainment pleasure. It's sure to be a year of whole-hearted appreciation for those who have built, andcontinue to build this wonderful house of wor-ship, that we might come together to create an envi-ronment of praise and thanksgiving for the One whocreated and continues to transform us all.

One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek af-ter: To live in the house of the Lord all the days ofmy life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to in-quire in His temple.
