FROM THE EDITOR

The new year has seen a surge in the membership growing to an all time high which is great to see. Over 2300 members and 62 clubs. The events in the events calendar are filling so all is looking great for the new year ahead. In this edition 2 new events down south for those interested in electric flight with the National electric rally being held at the Twin Cities club at Albury over the Easter break, which is not that far away. By the time you read this it will be only a matter of 3-4 weeks away.

The committee have visited Wondai recently along with inter-ested members and special interest groups to survey the site for another field. This site does look promising with a large area that can be developed into something reasonable for the larger style models such as IMAC and other large aircraft and with facilities close by. A brief is on page 29 along with some photos of the site. At the general meeting just gone on the 18th February the mat-ter of the rules and their changes have been discussed and there still seems to be quite a number of issues still with the re writing of the rules from various clubs. The consensus was that the final close off date for all submissions regarding any of the rule changes will be the 18th of March. Any submissions after this date will not be considered. Please mail your submissions to the President or the Secretary before the close off date. A meeting/workshop will follow once all sub-missions have been received.

There is also quite a number of positions vacant on the various sub committee. Details of these can be obtained from the Sec-retary Brian Mc William. Since the resignation of the SFI and the Control line Administrator expressions of interest have been called for these positions.

See further note from the secretary on page 22 for the criteria that is required in particular to the SFI position. All applications to be forwarded to the Secretary Brian Mc William .

Richard (Brown) from Bund-aberg went up to Gladstone at the end of September to do a trial inspection in front of the Trial Inspector up there, Brian Sonter. Rich-ard has just received his HM Inspectors certification.

Richard Brown built the 84” Mitchell B-25 about 4 years ago (own design) from cnc cut foam and balsa with a brown paper skin. It weighs 18lb and is powered by a pair of 5055 Turnigy motors with a 6S lipo and has Robart retracts. It has risen from the ashes after an onboard, mid air fire a couple of years ago.

Richard was trying to see if he could make a new lipo pack from the good cells of a couple of dodgy packs. It worked well for about 5 minutes then the current melted the solder joint. The wire that dropped off shorted it out and went up in smoke!! It was a spectacular landing approach with real smoke streaming from the nacelle!! Unfortunately I didn’t even have a camera with me.

F3B Radio Controlled Soaring is a very popular series Simple and successful The FAI World Cup in aeromodelling is simply organised, has been very successful for many years and can readily be compared to other sports such as alpine or nordic skiing, fencing, etc. The results of several international competitions in a multitude of different countries and categories – provided they are awarded FAI World Cup Status – are added up. The number of results achieved in a single country is limited to one or two events. The poorest results are deleted.

Different categories – common rules In recent years, the number of aeromodelling categories, for which there is an FAI World Cup ranking, has increased. In addition to the classic disciplines of free flight (F1), control line flight (F2) and space models there are various categories for radio controlled (RC) models such as RC glider categories (F3B/J), RC aerobatics (F3A) and RC electric flight (F5). The international FAI Sporting Code provides the common framework for all classes while specific sets of rules define individual categories and determine competition rules as well as the conditions for World Cup results. These rules and conditions must

Annual announcement of ranking The World Cup rankings are published on the CIAM website www.fai.org/ciam-events/world-cups Award ceremonies are held every April at the CIAM (FAI Aeromodelling Commission) meeting of delegates at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. Winners receive the sought-after World Cup medals, second and third placed competitors are presented with diplomas. The award ceremonies are always attended, not only by recognised and experienced sporting greats, but also by juniors. This gratifying fact demonstrates that the international competitions in the various countries not only serve as a showcase for outstanding sporting achievements but also provide wonderfully inspiring examples and motivation for young aeromodellers which helps to ensure the recruitment of young talent. a weekend of electric old timer flying

ARE REMOTE CONTROL HELICOPTER PILOTS MAD? NO, JUST MAD kEEN. 30 pilots converged on Tin Can Bay Model Flying Club for the 4th annual “Extreme Heli FunFly” on the weekend of Jan 28 and 29. This was way down on the 60 plus pilots that were expected due to the very poor weather conditions. Flooding of the Bruce Highway at Caboolture forced many to turn around or the fear of being flooded in and not being able to get to work on the Monday understandably put many off .One group of four pilots drove up from Grafton (about an 8 hour drive) on the Wednesday before Australia Day and were able to get a few flights in before the weekend, in between showers and rain. Not to be outdone, three pilots drove down from Emerald and one from Blackwater. In addition two sponsored pilots were also flown in – Lachlan Tu from Narre Warren (Vic) by RC Revolution and Jody Hodgson “Outrage Helicopters” from Newcastle (NSW) by Brooknet and Extreme Heli’s.Saturday saw the rain cease about 8am and it held off until about 4pm. So those that did make the trip were able to get an excellent days flying in. Although conditions under foot were very squelchy this has no effect on the Helicopters. Plenty of top level 3D flying was on display. Highlight for this writer was to see Lachlan “auto rotate” from 400 feet and catch the machine just metres off the ground – I don’t recommend this trick for anyone with a weak heart.Following tea at the local Country Club on Saturday night two pilots tried some night flying, but mechanical failures brought this to a swift halt. After raining most of Saturday night and all Sunday morning, event organisers decided to close the event off early, draw the pilots raffle and anyone willing to stay on were left to their own devices. VINTAGE STUNT SUCCESS

Today was a very successful first competition day at our field where Vintage Stunt conducted by the MAAQ C/L Administrator was well attended under the circumstances.Unfortunately a few of our original contestants could not make it for various reasons. One in particular coming from Rockhampton, Barry Frederickson sufferd some heart problems on the way and had to return home, we wish him well .Lindsay in conjunction with Rob Edgerton and John Jamieson did a sterling job with the judging. Many thanks for their assistance.Hopefully this will be the forerunner of more Stunt events.Speed was a bit more casual with a number of modellors testing their abilities in the speed pole. Unfortunately John Jacobsen wrote off one of his Proto speed ships with a line jam, but I am sure he will be back soon, bigger and better.More speed testing again tomorrow.I just hope that the dedicated C/L circle at Maryborough will be completed and in top shape for the State Champs in June. There is an enormous amount of work neeeds to be done to create a surface such as we have at CLASI, as it requires constant short mowing and topdressing and watering at least weekly, if not more often.NO PAIN , NO GAINWe had fliers from as far afield as Dalby and Maryborough though not so many from locally, though Peter Laing and Ross Stokes carried the can for ALC.Come on guys, we need more support to continue to grow C/L.We did have some visitors from Ipswich Sport House , namely Robyn Stephenson and Scott North who arrived early and stopped till well after lunch, partaking of the Nitro Burgers produced by our new BBQ chef, Geoff Hartley, ably assisted by Peter and Cecilia Morandini. Many thanks guys!.A special thank you to Robyn and Scott who now know a lot more about C/L.and can assist to promote our sport in the future. There were many models of various classes bought and sold today, mainly by the boys from Dalby who are now becoming Associate members of CLASI.Established fliers watch out for the Dalby boys as they are rapidly becoming a force in C/L and with the aquisition of the equipment recently purachased will soon be standing on the top step of the podium at Interclub competitions. This can only be good for control line in Queensland.Once again , thanks to all who attended ,assisted to erect fences etc without your help it would not have been a great FUN Day.And a special thanks to Trevor Larsen who came early to help, though not competing. On another note we have three volunteers for the Sports day in February, so I will submit our application tomorrow.AN EXTRA FOOTNOTE:I will add a bit also, great to have had you all at our field. We hope those that came this time will be joined by even MORE competitors next time. And a report on Barry, who I spoke to on phone last night. He is off to see doctor’s today, also thanks to our other intending Stunt competitor( Dave Helmrich) who was travelling down from Mackay with Barry and assisted in driving Barry and wife back home.A great sporting gesture I think. Great to see MAAQ being more proactive in C/L via Lindsay.Once again thanks to all, hope to see you all in the not too far distant future.John Taylor

I just wanted say a big thank you to everyone that participated in the Vintage Stunt Competition at CLASI on Saturday. You made it what is was. I hope you all had as much fun as I did.

Unfortunately we did have a couple of breakages during the pull test which both happened under 10kg with planes which weighed more than 1kg. I just want to say that if the planes hadn’t been properly pull tested and someone was injured it would have become a question of negligence on my part. So, I’m glad you understand and took it well.

Thanks very much Peter Laing for jumping in and acting as the caller.

Also John Jamieson and Rob Edgerton made a special trip over to CLASI to join with me as judges which was very much appreciated. Without them there would have been no contest. Thanks guys.

We did have as many as 11 entries but saw quite a few people withdraw for health reasons and unfore-seen circumstances. Lets hope that Barry Frederickson is alright after an unexpected trip to hospital for a check up. Just so as you’re not left in any doubt, I checked my scales today against the weights on my Barbells with the following results. 10kg weighed as 9.94kg; 2.5kg weighed as 2.49kg; 2kg weighed as 1.98kg. I hope that puts your minds at ease like it does mine.

Congratulations to Van Richards-Smith in 1st place with 535 points – Mark McDermott in 2nd place with 515 points – and a well deserved 3rd place going to Wayne Jackson with 460 points, just 1 point in front of Trent McDermott. Also I would like to send a few words of encouragement to Rod Williams from Dalby and Peter deVisser. You didn’t miss out by much guys and with a little bit more practice you’ll be good for the State Champs in June.

I hope to be holding a Classic Stunt Competition in around 2 months time and maybe 2 rounds (in-stead of the usual 4) of F2B in May if possible. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would be pleased to hear them.

Once again. Thanks to all.

Cheers. Lindsay.MAAQ CL Administrator

Clubs should notethat this Concessional Membership is only available to new members and those whohave not been affiliated since 1July 2010.Outcomes from Reported IncidentsThe latest Incident Reports have indicated several different areas where membersneed to be vigilant. In the first case, as a modeller was refuelling a grass mower, the spout on the fuelcontainer broke apart, spraying fuel into his face and left eye. Safety eye protectionwas being worn, however the fuel splashed under the rim of the glasses. The eyewas washed immediately and medical attention sought. This incident highlights thebenefits of members having some basic knowledge of first aid.The second case involves a modeller launching an electric powered pusher typeaircraft. On launch the propeller lacerated the modeller’s hand.Looking at corrective actions, the club suggested that similar designed modelsshould be launched by the wing tip. In closing this incident out, it was noted that themethod proposed may be applied to some models but was not appropriate for allpusher style aircraft, but the danger is real and has to be considered. In the last incident the model was suitably restrained, however while getting to hisfeet after starting the engine, the modeller stumbled. In doing so he swung his handout into the spinning propeller. In closing this incident out, the merits in the actions by the club indicating they willconduct a training course on a safe way for members to become upright afterkneeling to start engines was noted. It is also important that everyone is aware of thepossible reduced mobility of older members within our clubs and that assistance isoffered where needed.65th MAAA NationalsAeromodellers of Western Australia (AWA) will be hosting the 65th Nationals in Perthfrom 12 -20 April 2012. State Flying Instructor ConferenceAt the Conference held in October it was agreed that MAAA adopt a universalInstructor’s Course for a trial period of 2 years. The structure of the course will bebased on the current MAS NSW style with ideas from all states to be considered forincorporation into the final version of the course. The SFIs were asked to agree as a starting point for all future MAAA Flight Trainingdiscussions, the role that it fulfils in the development of flying skills. The followingthree items were documented, and it was also agreed that the points be inserted inany relevant documents1. Purpose of MAAA Flight InstructionTo assist in the development of a student’s flying skills in a new flight category tothe point where they are able to fly a basic model of that type safely bythemselves, coupled with the knowledge of the CASA, MAAA and clubrequirements, and to achieve this result as quickly and safely as is practical; tobe followed by assisting in progress to Gold Wings as requested.2. Queensland Pattern Association resurgence in activities for 2012

Just to bring all up to date with the current situation with the Queensland Pattern Associa-tion. Over the last few months of the 2011 season it was tough on the existing Committee to Manage Competitions - this came about for many reasons some of which were changes in individuals activities in their family life - also with the Global Financial Crisis costs were influencing their abilities to participate.

It was apparent to some of us "hardcore" old F3A fliers that the wheels had fallen off or were about to so I guess someone had to step up. As a retiree and a member of the National Committee (APA) I have opportunity without too much drama to get the Competitions back happening. The best thing has been the responses from the various clubs that I have con-tacted, their willingness to help in any way possible has been fantastic, a credit to the State Association. Our Calendar is listed on the new APA web Sitehttp://www.australianpatternassociation.com.au/ However this is the how we stand at the moment:Feb 25-26th Tin Can Bay - warm-up for the new PO13 schedule -demo's in the am Saturday - Competition forSportsman/Advanced/Expert/f3A PM and SundayApril 21-22nd Maryborough - Competition forSportsman/Advanced/Expert/f3A - 2 Days with 5 roundsJuly 7-8th Bundaberg - State QPFA championships - Competitionfor Sportsman/Advanced/Expert/f3A - trophy's awardedAugust 25-26th Dalby - Competition for Sportsman/Advanced/Expert/f3AOctober 20-21 Toowoomba - Competition for Sportsman/Advanced/Expert/f3A David Carkeek National secretary APA

NEWS FLASH RE USE OF ELECTRIC MODELS IN COMPETITION(obtained from APA web site) At the recent European Championships the below domestic rules were enforced and these rules have now been put forward to be included as part of the permanent F3A rules. All pilots of electric models should immediately make sure their models comply.1. For electric powered models, the electric power circuit(s) must not be physically connected, before the competitor is instructed to start his 8- minutes flight time and must be physically disconnected right after landing. This means simply that electric motors should not be connected to power until they are in the ready box and asked to do so by the line director.

2. The propulsion system(s) must automatically shut-off or fully idle at the moment an R/C signal failure should occur. (Closed throttle in fail safe). And, this means that all fliers using electric models must have their fail safe programmed to cut the throttle to zero (including idle) if there is a break in transmission or severe interference. We will be introducing a rule at the next rules change opportunity that states: All electric mod-els flown at APA sanctioned events must have an external means of connection and discon-nection of power.

Are you thinking about purchasing your first rc heli? Take a couple minutes see what the experts have to say about choices. A lot of people will recommend that you buy a large heli to start with like a .30 gasser. Most of these people will be old school and have flown for years. In the last couple of years heli brands and creators have really come up with some great innovation and precision for smaller helicopters and at a much better price.

The answer to this question will depend on many factors. How much you are willing to spend and how seriously you want to get into the hobby. Radio’s with programming for much better accuracy can run from 100-500 dollars on average alone.

If you are a beginner and too scared to try something with a lot of power and just want to fly indoors for the fun of it. I recommend the E-sky Lama4 or Twister coaxial heli’s. If you wish to pursue helicopters on a greater level outdoors the E-sky Honey Bee FP2 are great heli’s to start out with. I generally always recommend the 3rd option to people, simply buying a ready to fly 6 channel fully 3d capable helicopter and flying it in normal mode to learn on. This allows for you to expand and pursue 3d flying and more power options in the future. For these I would recommend Art-tech Falcon, E-sky Honey bee king v2, or the E-flite Blade 400. Like always it’s best to start with a computer simulator to begin with and progress from there. A simulator can also help determine what style of helicopter will be best suited for you to start with.

COST AND BEST BUYS OF RC HELICOPTERSNowadays, there is an increase in the number of people showing interest in the RC helicopter flying, and this in turn is becoming an addiction to them. However, what bothers so many of us is the compatibility of each model and their cost and reliability. We often wonder as to how we can do the best purchase and never be at loss.

Many of us have been through the frustra-tion and anger of not getting what we want. When we visit the dealer for an RC helicop-ter, we usually opt for flashy looking cop-ter with the impression that they look great while in the air.Nevertheless, we fail to understand that it is not in the looks, but in it’s built and brand lies the secret. The RC helicopters come in many forms. Some come in as fully assem-bled; where in we do not have to make any changes in the configuration. Some come in parts. In this case, we will require much help from the manual, the internet or some professional to assemble the parts perfectly.Below is a list of prices and guidelines for costs of the RC helicopters that run by elec-tric or fuel power. The prices listed here are the complete inclusion of all the compo-nents including the batteries, gyro, engine, etc.The prices listed here are approximate and they could vary or fall between the exact ranges as listed below depending upon the trends. Many hobby shops are ready to give discounts on the complete set.

Fuel Power¨ The Mid Sized Nitro RC copter – More than $1200.00¨ The Large Nitro RC copter- More than $2000.00¨ The Gas RC copter – More than $3000.00¨ The Turbine RC copter – More than $9000.00Electric Power¨ The Micro Coaxial Hobby Grade RC copter – approx. $100.00 – $200.00¨ The Small Single Rotor Hobby Grade – More than $300.00¨ The Mid Sized Single Rotor Hobby Grade – More than $900.00¨ The Large Single Rotor Hobby Grade – More than $1500.00It is advisable not to go for copters, which are pre-owned. Instead, manufacturers are luring people in to the packages where in they can save their money and time. The most popular among the RC copter brands are the Thunder Tiger Raptor 50 and E Flite Blade 400 & 450 sizes

How Do We Choose the Best Helicopter?Nowadays, a large number of people are tuning in and showing an interest in the RC heli-copter flying like never before. Hence, it is challenge for most of them, as they are unable to distinguish between right and wrong. This job of choosing the right model has turned even more difficult with lots of junk in this category.Once again, we see people come in with dilemma as whether to choose an inexpensive helicopter with fixed pitch, so that they can learn on it. New advanced helicopter can be pur-chased once we out grow the old one. The second thought is if we will have to buy a quality helicopter with better pitch and we can grow with the fun of learning.Considering all the odds, it is better if we can buy the quality helicopter with better pitch even if we are a newbie to the “heliflying “hobby. The reason is simple- We will not out grow the quality in collective pitch within a span of few weeks. In addition, we can save time and money. The helicopter-flying hobby is quite expensive. Hence, we should decide on choosing to buy the best. Opting the best does not mean we should go for extravagant looking copters or rather cheap ones. These kinds of copters are of no worth in terms of functionalities or fun. People who have been through this have cried foul and been through frustration as they invested their money in this poor quality flashy looking eye candy. All we have to check is a better flight performance rather than its looks. For this, it is advis-able to go for the Single Rotor. This is a collective pitch copter, which is best for anybody from a beginner to pro.Cautions¨ It is better if we stayed away from the single rotor collective pitch copter with rotors hav-ing electric tails. They are difficult to learn. Instead, we can go for either the belt driven or tail rotors driven by shaft with changeable pitch.ConclusionThree very best copters recommended for buys here.¨ The first one is E-flite Blade MSR, which is a very small helicopter and is micro electric.¨ The second is a X-Cell 40 helicopter which is manufactured by The Miniature Aircraft USA.¨ The strongest growth we see nowadays is the single rotor in the 400 class electric. For this kind, the E-Flite’s Blade 400 and the newer Blade 450 is the best choice.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT.With the New Year well under way I would like to welcome all new members who have helped make this the largest membership year ever and it still has until the end of June to go. Last years membership was overtaken in early January.

Recently the MAAQ executive and interested members attended an inaugural meeting at the new Won-dai State field. The field is an unregistered aerodrome with very little traffic and is owned by the South Burnett Council. A plan to develop a runway suitable for large Aircraft along with a maintenance programme was dis-cussed. It is envisaged that this field will be open to all MAAQ affiliates and Special interest groups no matter what their field of interest is. This is the first field in Queensland to be managed by the MAAQ and we will be part of a user group to manage the aerodrome on behalf of the Council.Wondai is about 3 hours North West of Brisbane and will service many members well into the future. The MAAQ Executive is always on the lookout for areas that we can develop for the future of Aeromodel-ling and would like to hear from any one with information about suitable sites we can lease, particularly land closer to Brisbane.

With the advent of Telemetry being available at affordable prices many modellers may be seeking an area to practice FPV (first person view), return to home and SGMA (self guided model aircraft) once the rules are finalised by the MAAA to cover this type of flying and Wondai would be the perfect place to experiment with this technology.

Finally it was most disappointing to have our Senior Flying Instructor resign recently as he has been a very passionate advocate for flight training both in this State and more recently in his capacity as MAAA CFI and will be missed for some time to come. Michael also held the positions of Education delegate for the MAAA a task which he carried out with enthusiasm and RC Administrator. Michael has served 8 years on the MAAQ Committee in various roles which is a long time for any one to volunteer their ser-vices, particularly in areas so time consuming.Michael has a passion for all things Historical and was responsible for providing the articles on the MAAQ web site.

The Committee wishes Michael every success in his future endeavours and hope he enjoys more flying time now that he is not committed to the MAAQ.

L-R:State Secretary Brian McWilliam, SFI Mike Snaibaitis, State Treasurer Barry McDonald, & Free Flight Administrator Ted Burfein admire the facilities at Wondai . Photo on right shows the area to be utilized .
