Golden Anniversary Celebrations launched
The month of March was a big one for the Award in Barbados, award
holders and supporters from every walk of life and every generation
gathered at the St. Mary Anglican Church to officially start 50th
anniversary celebrations. The service was well attended and our
participants gave an excellent showing of themselves. In addition to
the church service to officially start the year of celebrations there
was a fundraising golf tournament and dinner. In attendance at
these events were local patron, Governor General His Excellency Sir
Elliott Belgrave GCMG KA and International Award Trustee, Lord
Paul Boateng. (See Pages 4-7 for more)

Frederick Smith and St. Michael School back on board.
Fiftieth anniversary celebrations for the Award are underway and so too are a number
of new groups. This is going to be an exciting year as more young people start on their
journey with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. In the last month. two new
groups have got started at the Frederick Smith Secondary School and the St. Michael
School.
As he handed over record
books to some of the new
members at Frederick
Smith, Principal Jefferson Phillips, encouraged other
students to sign up for the Programme. The group is
led by music teacher, Mr. Dwaine Hope and they are
already getting started with first aid and other pre-
liminary training for the adventurous journey sec-
tion.
Over at the St. Michael School, parents and students
heard first hand experiences from gold award holders at
a presentation about the programme. Former student
Kandia King-Jones shared details of her time with the
Award and was sure mention the valuable life lessons
which she gained through doing the bronze, silver and
gold. She highlighted learning how to deal with different
personalities and general team work
abilities as two of the benefits of the
programme. Also sharing were Stephen
Smith, Sheila Hoad and Lt. Col Owen
Springer.

During the church service a combined group of participants from Harrison College, Queen’s College and The
Alexandra School came together for an instrumental performance. This was well received by all who attended.
As he delivered his sermon, Father Von Watson reminded all of the importance of service to the community and
highlighted the Award as a organisation that was doing good work in that regard. Attending the service were
some of the Award’s stalwarts including Mr. Richard Goddard and Americas Regional Director Mr. David Clarke.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Trevor Carmichael spoke of some of the great moments of the Award over
the last five decades. Speaking to the media afterwards, Dr. Carmichael described the programme as one of the
most socially inclusive activities in the world. He spoke heavily on the reach of the Award in bring together people
from all walks of life both locally and internationally.
The fundraising golf tournament was played at the Royal Westmoreland Barbados and attracted more than a doz-
en teams. There could however, be only one winner; Mr. Jim Brewer was that lucky guy. During the dinner held at
the Fairmont Royal Pavilion, guests heard from Lord Boateng, who implored them to continue to support the
Award. In doing so, he noted the immeasurable value of service organisations in the development of individuals
and by extension the world in which we live.
Many thanks are extended to all the sponsors and volunteers who assisted with the events in any way. The anni-
versary celebrations will continue throughout the year and culminate in February of 2014 under the theme ‘Fifty
Years—Challenging Youth in Everyway’

More Work at Welchman Hall
Once again Award participants have been at work in
Welchman Hall Gully. Working on their bronze awards,
the group spent every Saturday morning there for three
months engaged in a variety of areas. They were set to
work clearing fallen limbs from the paths and also pre-
pared some new tracks. Visitors to the gully are know
able to enjoy refreshed seating as the participants could
also be found busy staining wooden benches.
Welchman Hall wasn’t the only stop for this group; there
were also tours out of the gully. Led by Manager, Debra
Brancker, the group at times were knee deep in mud at
Turners Hall Woods. There, they collected seedlings to
be transplanted at the gully. Additionally, the youngsters
were able to learn more about the plants that they see
daily. They were asked to collect information from peo-
ple in their communities on how plants are used for me-
dicinal and other purposes. Those who took part in this
project came the groups at Alexandra School and
Queen’s College. Captions (Top) Manager Debra Brancker leading the group into

Getting Equipped for CASC 2013
With just a few months to go before the start of CASC 2013 the local team has been working on a number of are-
as to make sure that it’s an unforgettable experience. In addition to lots of fun safety is a high priority item and
so, members of the planning committee took part in first aid training with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of
Barbados. The training was ably led by experienced instructor Mr. Clyde Cox. Also taking part in the training
were some of our group leaders who are now more prepared for any eventuality.
It was an extremely informative day as Mr. Cox covered basic first aid skills.
The topics covered included burns, stroke, heat exhaustion and choking. One
of the major components of the training was learning how to administer CPR.
Although the day was punctuated with lots of laughter, all agreed that the
training is essential and extremely useful in all areas of life.
In a effort to share information about this year’s
CASC, participants were invited to a meeting in
February. Attendees were able to meet some of
the local staff and have questions answered.
There has already been some discussion of what
will be happening on talent night to make sure
that things Bajan shine through.
All interested persons are reminded of the registration deadline of Wednesday May 1 to get signed up. Also see page 12 for more on CASC 2013.
