You can mail it back to us to the attention of Meg Webber, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Kennesaw State University, 3333 Busbee Drive, MD 3301, Kennesaw, GA 30144.

If you have additional questions, please contact Meg Webber at 470-578-3508.

On a cruise ship you often meet some interesting people. We like to sit at

a dinner table with three other couples which gives us a chance to get to know people from different parts of the world and learn about their lives. We have met some wonderful and interesting people over the years.

We just returned from a trip which offered a new experience for me. One of the couples at our table spent a great deal of time complaining about our country and specifically about how our government treats senior citizens.

They live in California. They complained about how seniors are neglected by our government, inadequate social security and the uncertain future of social security, interest rates on certificates of deposit being too low, the lack of special attention for seniors at airports, inadequate medical care for seniors – and on and on.

I agreed with them on many items especially when they stated that the government does not appreciate the purchasing power of seniors who have less to spend when their CDs are earning 1% or less. (They apparently have much of their retirement savings in bank FDIC insured CDs).

I finally spoke up and asked them if they had voiced their opinions to their legislators – feeling certain that the answer would be a resounding “yes.” To my surprise, they had never contacted their representatives to register their complaints and feelings.

To make matters worse, they had not voted in years. They stated that their one vote would not make a difference. I thought this topic would be a good theme for our quarterly article.

The percentage of the population in our country age 60 and older is projected to increase until the year 2050. Seniors do have special needs and special interests. We also have a vote which is very valuable.

Please discuss your concerns among your friends and make your feelings heard by your representatives. It does not matter what political affiliation you have, your concerns for seniors should be heard. We can make a difference with our increasing number of votes and we can make a difference with our dollars.

Above all, please take the time to vote for people you believe will be supportive of issues beneficial to seniors. Make our representatives aware of the fact that we vote. Also, please encourage your friends to exercise their right to vote. Together we can all make a difference.

Hope to see you in class soon.

Building a LIFE STORY

How does it affect your future?

Cobb Cty, Ga

2015

CChris and Joanne Schleier both share a passion for teaching Genealogy. Together, they share that love with others in the “Getting Started with Genealogy” course.

Joanne began to teach this class in 2009 after experienced researchers attempted to help her restore her family’s history including nationalities, countries of origin, customs, military service, professions and family medical history. It was then that the Cobb County Genealogy Society asked her to teach their annual Beginner’s course. “I jumped at the chance to give back to the community who helped me get started,” said Joanne.

One Ancestor at a TimeChris, a Senior Manager at IBM

and master woodworker, started teaching woodworking 10 years ago. This expanded into teaching at other locations, which eventually lead him to teach genealogy.

“I was self-taught and consequently struggled to understand the bigger picture and process of genealogical research.” said Chris. He later began to take local and regional classes to further develop his knowledge which led him to start teaching genealogy in 2007.

The OLLI class “Getting Started in Genealogy,” was introduced in

2015. Tracing your family ancestry is a fascinating process. Chris and Joanne will use their expertise to teach you how to decipher your family’s background.

“Anyone with a family can benefit from taking this course,” said Joanne. “This is the digital age and records preservation is a large part of the impetus to get records online.”

The beginner course is designed to provide a good foundation and a thorough overview of the vast resources available. Students will learn about the national, state and county records available. The class is a

combination of lecture, discussion and hands on computer time.

Joanne and Chris like to teach their students how to use the tools available, record the found information–a key component for long-term success–and how to not become “fact-collectors,” but builders of a life story. For more information, visit ccpe.kennesaw.edu.
