James Madison University is a model of the Engaged University—broadly involved with ideas, our community, and with the world. Our partnership with Study Group helps bring the world to us by attracting international students to our campus.

James Madison University is a very special place in the Shenandoah Valley

of Virginia, surrounded by beautiful mountains and just two hours from

the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. We are a fairly large university

with approximately 20,000 students, yet offer a very warm and hospitable

environment with a family feel and a strong culture of community and civic

engagement. Named after the Father of the U.S. Constitution and a great

statesman, our university is delighted to welcome international students

and is committed to making you feel at home. We want all students

to succeed and believe that our partnership with Study Group creates

a friendly environment where our students can improve their English

language skills while also taking courses in our academic programs.

All JMU students take courses in our General Education Program, which

offers a liberal arts foundation that will help you to think in different ways

as you solve problems and address issues in the world today. We also

offer a wide variety of excellent academic majors. Our faculty members

are devoted to teaching students, guiding their research and mentoring

them as they develop as scholars and mature as human beings.

Jonathan R. Alger, J.D., M.B.A.President, James Madison University

PAThwAYS TO SECOND YEAR UNDERgRADUATE STUDYINTERNATIONAL FIRST YEAR (IFY)

For students who meet JMU admissions requirements, but need additional English language support, the International Study Center (ISC) delivers a customized English language and academic preparation program for undergraduate students to help them integrate into American university life while enjoying the full Madison experience.

The International First Year (IFY) provides pathway programs that combine English training and 27–31 JMU course credits for a smooth transition into degree success. Students can choose from four different pathways that lead into more than 100 programs of study.

IFY General Studies Pathway 27 credits

IFY Business Pathway 27 credits

IFY Engineering Pathway 31 credits

IFY Science, Technology and Mathematics (STM) Pathway 30 credits

A combination of English, academic, and study skills courses are taught at the ISC, providing the necessary academic credits for the first year of undergraduate coursework. Upon successful completion of the IFY, students matriculate into their second academic year of undergraduate coursework.

Academic credits earned in the ISC

Actual credits earned will depend upon successful completion of English and credit bearing courses.Students need to obtain a 2.25 GPA, and complete courses ISC 103 and ISC 123 with grade C or better, to progress to Year 2 of the JMU bachelor’s degree.

This diagram serves as a guide only. Duration of the IFY program is determined by the results of the English language placement exam taken upon arrival at the University.* Students can submit an Embassy language certificate at level 5 or higher to determine their English language proficiency.† English for Academic PurposeApplicants with a higher level of English (minimum TOEFL iBT 80 or 6.5 IELTS) can find direct entry requirements at www.jmu.edu/admissions

A liberal arts curriculum gives you the foundation necessary to advance to degrees in communication studies, education, health and human services, humanities and social sciences as well as visual and performing arts. Across disciplines, students can expect academic rigor, engaged and responsive professors, small class sizes, hands-on opportunities and a competitive edge in the job market as a JMU graduate.

JMU’s General Education Program, The Human Community, is required of all students and seeks to provide students with a broad and enriching foundation in the liberal arts and sciences.

Math and science courses paired with courses from the liberal arts curriculum give you the foundation necessary to advance to the general engineering degree. The Engineering pathway requires high level coursework in physics and calculus to successfully transition into the Engineering major. Students are offered an interdisciplinary curriculum, technical training, classes in business administration, and project experience centered on sustainable design giving them a competitive advantage compared to a traditional engineering curriculum.

This pathway differs from the Engineering pathway in the science courses offered: general physics and biology are taken instead of the calculus-based physics courses in engineering. The STM pathway provides the necessary foundation to advance to degrees in science, technology, and mathematics.

JMU is the first university to acquire Science on a Sphere (SOS) – a sphere-shaped, visualization tool that was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). SOS uses four projectors to project onto the surface of a six-foot diameter sphere and is used for research, education and outreach.
