Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on table 337: Jail inmates by Sex, Race, and Hispanic

Origin: 1990 to 2008. The magnitude of the problem is discussed to how wide spread it is. Scope

is a slightly smaller view of the problem in terms of population. Changes in the problem show

how the problem varies over time. Lastly, disparities show how the problem various in terms of

race, sex, sexual orientation, etc.

The total amount of juveniles and adults in jail between 1990 and 2008 are what is being

represented percentage wise. Magnitude shows the specified problem on a somewhat large scale.

This particular data is from all the United States and subsequent years are distinguished by color.

In the early 1990s the percentage of jail inmates was substantially lower than that of the

mid to late 2000s. There was a large increase in jail inmates during the four years between 200

and 2004. Between 2005 and 2006 there was smaller but still substaintal increase in jail inmates.

However, in the last three preceeding the end of the data there was a fairly even number.

The number, in percent, of all the adult jail inmates in the United States. Scope is still

wide but more of a consise viewpoint. This chart consists of adult jail inmates in the United

states. Throughout the eight years this data was collected there were significant changes in total

jail inmate intake.

As seen in the previous chart the early and mid 1990s jail inmate population was minial

in comparison to that of the 2000s. Each year there was a 1-2% increase in the jail inmate

population. The bulk of the jump came between the years of 2000 and 2004. There was almost

3% percent spike in the jail inmate population. This spike became even within the years of 2005-

2008.

Changes in the problem in terms of increases or decreases over a specified period of time

is what is being represented. Throughout the eight years this data was collected there were

significant changes in total jail inmate intake. There was a large increase in jail inmates during

the four years between 200 and 2004.

As seen in the previous chart the early and mid 1990s jail inmate population was minial

in comparison to that of the 2000s. Each year there was a 1-2% increase in the jail inmate

population. The increase of the jail inmate population the States was seen all across the board

Male, Female, White, Black and Hispanic were all dependent variables that also saw significant

increase in population

Disparities of the problem delve into wether or not there are differences in the problem in

terms of age, sex, race, etc. Disparities in the problem break down the data in a more clear and

consise way. All the dependent variables are broken down and viewed in order to gain a better

understanding. Here each dependent variable is broken down percentage wise and has its own

identifying color.

One clear constant in the data is the overwhelming number of male jail inmates.

Throughout the years the data was collected males have led the pack of inmates. Whites and

Black jail inmates have made up the mass majority of the population as well. Hispanics are the

second to last in jail population with the females last. Within the last 2-3 years there was

collected there was a significant increase in female population.

Summary and Conclusion

Disparities of the problem determine wether or not there are differences in the problem in

terms of age, sex, race, etc. One clear constant in the data is the overwhelming number of male

jail inmates. Throughout the years the data was collected males have led the pack of inmates.

There has been an inoridinate amount of males in jail. Whites and Black jail inmates have made

up the mass majority of the population as well. Blacks are now an even bigger population in jails

and prisions in the United States. Hispanics are the second to last in jail population with the

females last.

These trends have even continued today. The rise of jail inmate population has risen just

as it has throughout the 2000s. This problem of adult and juvenile incarceration can be seen all

over the United States. Prevention, educational, and rehabilitation programs need to do a better

job at keeping the inmate population at bay. Numbers similar to the data of the early 1990 s is

more of an ideal rate.
