JCOP President’s Message Scott R. Drab, Pharm.D., CDE, BC-ADM
It’s hard to believe that the summer show season has come to an end. It has been a great year so far and
the number of events and especially new events for our members has grown. Of course, there are still
many events left including the ever-popular Hartwood Show, Fall Leaf Driving Tour, and Christmas
Dinner. Also, as we head into fall, the Board of Directors, officers, and myself will start the planning
process for 2014. If you have any ideas regarding activities or events that you would like to see the club
involved in, please feel free to contact me. If you’re interested in volunteering your time to the club, I
would appreciate hearing from you also. There are events and activities that occur during the year that
we could use additional help with.
In July we conducted our annual concours in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. This
was preceded by a dinner and silent auction at A&L Motors in Monroeville hosted by Mario Moschella.
I want to thank Bryan and Candy Williams, Gene and Janet Daniele, and Terry Smith for all their hard
work that made the events so memorable. I also want to thank Mario for inviting us into the dealership
and showing us such a wonderful evening.
If you missed the Sewickley show you missed a great one. The weather was sunny and the cars that
showed up were simply spectacular. I want to thank Bobby Rahal Jaguar for sponsoring the event. I also
want to thank Charlie and Shirley Roberts, Gene and Janet Daniele, and Ashley and Niko Mrkonja for
helping to organize and run the event and Welsh Enterprises, Inc. for providing goodie bags.
A barn find is defined as a classic car that is discov-
ered abandoned, usually in derelict condition. The
term comes from the tendency to be found in places
such as barns. For Jaguar enthusiasts, barn find sto-
ries are always fascinating. Many of us dream of
discovering an old E-type or XK tucked away some-
where in a barn. Well that dream has come true for
club member Mike Zappa. Mike recently discovered
an E-type coupe tucked away, where else, in a barn.
There is something romantic about seeing a Jaguar
emerging from its dusty cover, being brought out
into the light and then carefully restored to its origi-
nal condition. Well, you won’t have to imagine it in
your mind; Mike has agreed to chronicle his barn-
find experience and subsequent restoration in the
Jargon. The first part of the story can be found in
this issue, on Page 10. Mike Zappa’s E-type “barn find”

The 2013 Sewickley Show By Scott Drab
Both spectators and the proud owners of a variety of im-
pressive automobiles turned out for the Jaguar Club of Pitts-
burgh’s Annual Display of Jaguars, Rolls Royces, and Bent-
leys held in the picturesque town of Sewickley, PA on Satur-
day, August 10th. The weather was great as the crowd enjoyed
strolling amongst these fabulous cars with the classic tunes of
DJ Pete Highlands providing a great backdrop.
Co-chair Scott Drab arrived early in the morning, along
with Gene & Janet Danielle and Chuck & Shirley Roberts who
were part of the Planning Committee, to begin preparations for
the day and start lining up the display of cars as they rolled into
the center of town. Principal sponsor Bobby Rahal Jaguar was
also on hand early with their two spectacular vehicles, the new
F-Type and an XF with advance all-wheel drive, both looking
sleek and elegant. These gorgeous cars attracted as much atten-
tion as the classics, and this year again we had Service Techni-
cians from the Rahal Service Department on hand to explain
the mechanicals and design philosophy behind them. Bobby
Rahal and Flynn Tire also generously donated an array of door
prizes that appealed to every Jaguar enthusiast, including shirts,
tool kits, and wine glasses – so many so that every entrant
walked away with something!
By noon, the majority of cars had assembled and the judges began the daunting task of selecting winners from
the beautiful array of well-prepared cars. The early XK class was no exception. Scott Drab took first place with
his 1953 XK 120 OTS. Scott also garnered the People’s Choice award for his XK 120. Bob Grove, who rarely
misses the show, received a second place award for his elegant XK 120 FHC. Rounding out third was Ed
Graham with his ever popular 1956 XK 140 Coupe.
The E-type was well-represented with nine sleek crowd-
pleasing cars. Three cars made up the E-types Series 1 (1961-
1967) class, where Sam McVeigh was awarded first-place for
his red 1967 Jaguar E-type FHC. Second-place went to David
Murray and his 1964 E-type OTS, and Charlie Robert’s 1967 E
-type 2+2 was awarded third-place. David’s car is interesting
for those who may not be familiar with it. It was purchased
new by his father Jack in 1964 from Fred Reynolds Sports Car
Center in Irwin, PA. It was passed along to David and has re-
mained a local car all of its life. Bryan Williams and his 1970
E-type OTS (in photo above) took the first-place prize in the E-Types Series 2 class. Bryan’s car was parked
ahead of an F-type and it was easy to see how the F-type draws from the design of the E-type.

The 2013 Sewickley Show By Scott Drab
Greg Sopiak, a regular attendee of the show, received a second-
place award for his stunning 1968 OTS. Charlie Roberts once
again brought his 1973 E-Type OTS and won first place in the Se-
ries 3 (1971-1975) class, with second-place going to Don Johnson
and his 1971 E-Type Coupe.
The Saloon (1931-1995) class was represented by first-place win-
ner Frank Bailey and his 1960 Mark 2 Saloon. Gene Daniele was
back again this year with an amazing 1996 XJS Convertible that
earned him a first place win in the XJS class.
The Newer Saloons (1996-2013) class included past winner and
first-place winner Dave and Cindy Petersen and their wonderfully
prepared 2003 XJ Super 8 Vanden Plas, Ruby. First-time entrant and
second-place winner Robert Long displayed his wonderfully pre-
pared 2002 S-Type.
The Newer Jaguar Sports Car Class was represented by no less
than three XKs. The top spot saw a tie with first-place awards pre-
sented to both Janet Daniele and Terry Collins for their 1997 XK 8
Convertible and 2010 XKR respectively. Stuart Steinberg and his
amazing 2004 extensively modified XKR Portfolio edition received
second-place.
The non-Jaguar class was represented well by Joseph Kleynjans
who received the first place honors with his 2009 Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren Convertible.
As always, the hard-working judges did a wonderful job and deserve a great deal of thanks for their dedica-
tion, knowledge and attention to detail. This year’s judges were: Don Johnson, Dan Herrmann, Dave Murray,
Pete Galinowski, Bryan Williams, Rich Aronson, Dan Meyers, Rick Bartkowski, Bill Cooper and Head Judge
Jim Boffo. A special thanks also has to go to the planning committee which includes Gene and Janet Daniele
and Chuck and Shirley Roberts. Without their efforts and hard work the show would not have been as success-
ful as it was. Finally, special thanks to all the participants and spectators who came and made the 2013 Sew-
ickley Show a wonderful and enjoyable event for all. We look forward to seeing you and your cars in 2014!

It began with a phone call to a friend about my interest in a 1967 Series 1,
FHC. He said he would keep his eye out for one if he heard anything.
Well, several weeks go by and my friend tells me about a guy in North Central
Pennsylvania that may be selling his car. I contacted the owner and found out
that he does have interest in selling his car and invited me out to see his
sullen beauty.
Two of my buddies go with me, Joe and Rocco, on the road trip to an area that I
could swear I heard banjo's playing! I know I saw a few people with no teeth!
We arrive at the sellers house expecting to see a Jag in the garage but found
nothing! The seller said we had to travel a little further. Another 10 miles
through the back roads of Pennsylvania, to a remote area with no phone service!
Well, here we are, the three of us in front of a barn. The barn had garage
doors, but no electrical power.
Open sesame..there it is! A disassembled, dirty, bird dung, mouse urine FHC.
I loved it!
After inspection of the car I told the owner I would have to check with the
boss..namely my wife, to get her reaction. She told me what price to bargain
for an go ahead and buy it. Well since we know all car guys are smarter than
women I didn't take her advice and said I want to think about it. Several weeks
passed by and during that time the price went up. Considerably! Goes to show
you just how smart your wife or significant other really is!! I decided to take
another road trip with the Rocco's and my wife to check out the car again.
The owner said to meet him at his house and we can follow him and his two dogs
to the farm house and barn in the middle of nowhere!
We get to the farm house, with optimism in our eyes, and decide to look at the
smelly old boxes that had the parts stored in them. My wife is a dog lover so
we felt she could keep the dogs occupied while Tony and I would check out the
parts. Both dogs were very friendly and wanted to follow us where ever we
went.
Well, it started in one bedroom where some of the parts were located. The one
dog really had a humping problem! From one leg to another to where it finally
ended up on Rocco's leg to the point where I had to yank the dog off. Tony
made a comment that his leg wanted a cigarette after that episode!!
To everyone's satisfaction a deal was struck and we said we would pick up the
car next week.
At last next week arrives. Another road trip with the Rocco's! Since most
vintage Jag owners are vintage themselves we listened to 50's music, cracked
jokes and basically was having a great time! Our topics ranged from politics to
Botox and liposuction for movie stars. Everyone had an opinion of what was
real or surgically enhanced. Leave it to Beth to interject one of those lasting
comments. Everyone knows how sweet and demure Beth is but we are still
laughing about her comment. She stated she wouldn't mind having a little lipo-
suction from her derriere and injected into her lips and cheeks. That way when
people she doesn't like kiss her cheek, or more likely her derriere, they will not
know what they are kissing !!!
Well we arrive at the barn. Each one of us having a glint in our eye with
excitement! My wife had a dream the night before that a Copperhead was un-
der the bonnet and when I open it up, it bites me! Does that mean I'm snake
bitten with this car? I doubt it since Copperheads are not in that part of the
country. only Rattlers! It took some time to load the car on the trailer plus
all the parts. Everyone pitched in and we got the car safely on and we started
to motor back to the highway. Once home at the lake we unloaded the car, gave
her a bath and sorted through the parts.
Now that she is back in my shop in the Northshore, I can foresee many long
discussions over a glass a wine, a Cuban cigar, and what color it should be
painted!
Keep stay tuned and further progress will be written.
