Buried Union Academy Cemetery, Carroll Co., TN. No Date Misc. 1. Malinda, daughter of David Haston (Dutch) m. Arthur Mitchell, son of Spencer & Rachel Roberts Mitchell. 2. From Worth Ray’s TENNESSEE COUSINS White County, Tennessee Lost Links in the Lewis Family Turn Up in White County, Tennessee “Major William Lewis, from South Carolina, with four of his sons, settled in White County, Tennessee, came to Hickory Valley in White County, Tennessee and settled in 1798. Three of the four sons had made a trip from the old home in South Carolina, to the vicinity of Nashville, prior to this time, and on the head of Cane Creek, where they discovered a lead mine, and loaded up with the metal and went on, with the resolve to return later and claim the mine, which they were never afterwards able to locate. Upon their return trip they passed through Hickory Valley. On reaching South Carolina they received their grants for lands and brought their father and younger brother back to White County and settled in Hickory Valley. William Lewis the father, was a Revolutionary soldier and is said to have been with Washington at Valley Forge. Major William Lewis’ four sons were: 1. Thomas Lewis

2. Benjamin Lewis 3. Elijah Lewis 4. William Lewis

With the Lewis family from South Carolina came two brothers named John and William Mitchell and a sister. Benjamin Lewis married the Mitchell sister, and they became the parents of three boys and three girls, as follows:

1. Mitchell Lewis 2. Harvey Lewis 3. John Lewis 4. Leah Lewis m. William Bryan 5. Patsy Lewis m. James Gracey 6. Betty Lewis m. Joseph Simmons

Benjamin Lewis was a soldier in the War of 1812 and was with Jackson at New Orleans. These Lewis’ had cousins by the names of Bryan, Gracey, Warren, Rogers, Hayes and Mayes.” [I include this because: (1) Thomas Lewis was one of the witnesses mentioned in the execution of the deed for sale of White County 50 acres by Jacob Mitchell to Pleasant White. (2) John Mitchell, William Mitchell and their sister of South Carolina. (3) The mention of a lead mine at the head of Cane Creek. Jacob Mitchell’s 50 acres is sometimes mentioned as being on Cane Creek, and sometimes as being at Big Spring. Washington County, Missouri, where Jacob and family are in 1840 was known for it’s lead mining. …………….and I am aware that Worth Ray’s book is known for its inaccuracies.]

3. Also, regarding Spencer Mitchell, Mark Mitchell, etc., etc., there is more I could have included. However, I chose not to include a lot of disjointed items in order to avoid confusion with too many unrelated details. At this point I just can’t get a handle on a connection between the two groups, although there might have been one. They seem to show up many times in the same proximity. If anyone would like to pursue this further, I can be reached at [email protected]. 4. I will send this which came from the TN State Library and Archives in Nashville: #654, Reel 2, File #135, Copy of a letter from Mrs. Arthur (Mary Edna ) Mitchell, P. O. Box 1036, Waco, TX. [Arthur b. 1894.] “……….Mark Mitchell… Rev. pensioner of Warren Co., birthplace now Van Buren Co……..Dad knows who Spencer Mitchell was, but says he is not of our family. He thinks he went to Missouri. He knew people from his former home, Itasco, Texas, from Missouri, who knew Spencer Mitchell.” Mark Mitchell mentioned in Hawkins Co., TN, records, 1787. Solomon Mitchell, Rev. soldier, d. 1833 in Hawkins Co., TN, m. Nancy Broden. Spencer Mitchell was commissioned Lieut. of 29th Regt. Aug. 8, 1807. ………where??? 5. It is my theory that the Jacob Mitchell who appears in White County, TN, in 1808, is the second son of Morris and Elizabeth Hoosong Mitchell. The Morris Mitchell records show that their Jacob married Lucinda Hastings/Haston. Jacob Mitchell lived next to Daniel Haston and David Haston in White County. David Haston had a daughter named Lucinda. This Lucinda was too young to have married Jacob Mitchell but is it not possible that David Haston might have had a sister named Lucinda (the daughter of Daniel Haston)? I think that Jacob Mitchell might be the same person who lived in Monroe County, TN, in 1830 and I am fairly certain he is the same person listed in the 1840 Washington Co., MO, census. In the 1840 Washington Co., MO, census are listed: Jacob Mitchell (the elder) with family; Jacob Mitchell (the younger) with family, and Lorenzo Mitchell with a family. I think that the younger Jacob Mitchell is a son and that Lorenzo Mitchell is also a son of the older Jacob. Another son is surely Robert D. Mitchell. In 1842 Robert D. Mitchell married Martha M. Paul in Washington Co., TN. The minister incorrectly recorded the groom as William B. Mitchell. Later in an application for pension, Martha Paul Mitchell corrected that error stating that her husband had a cousin named William B. Mitchell. (If Robert D. Mitchell were a grandson of Morris Mitchell, he would have had a cousin named William B. Mitchell.) About 1851, Robert D. Mitchell moved his family to Greene County, MO, and promptly left for the California gold fields. He died in California. In the pension application mentioned earlier, Martha Paul Mitchell included affidavits of two women who had been present at her wedding: Maria/Mariah Mitchell and Elizabeth Baze. I wonder if (a) they might have been sisters of Robert D. Mitchell, (b) if Elizabeth might have been a sister and Maria/Mariah might have been a sister-in-law. When Morris Mitchell died in 1848, the settlement of the estate listed Jacob Mitchell as being of Greene Co., MO. The 1850 census of Crawford Co., AR, lists Jacob Mitchell, 65, living with Lorenzo Mitchell. In 1863, there is an interesting exchange of real estate among Jacob Mitchell, Martha Paul Mitchell, and one of her sons, Archibald Perryman.

The odd given/Christian name of Axley occurs with regularity throughout both the Jacob Mitchell family and the Morris Mitchell—including heirs of both families. There are numerous other coincidences and similarities that correspond in both families. Virginia Mitchell Barry 1337 NE Hilltop Drive Blue Springs MO 64014-2332 816-229-8507 [email protected]
