Company introduction

J&P is the UK supply partner for itsthree parent companies; H-Bau,Jordahl and Pfeifer – internationallyestablished business operationswhich can claim combined heritagegoing back over 500 years.

For today’s modern constructionrequirements, J&P supplies acomprehensive range of products in thesphere of fixing, handling andconnection of structural elements.Examples include curtain-wallconnections to the building frame, high-load transportation anchors for structuralprecast members, or insulatedconnections for concrete/steel balconies, plus a host of other applications.

Primarily, our products have beendeveloped to assist reinforced concrete

construction (precast and in-situ) but weare also adept at solving the specialdemands of hybrid construction, i.e.where reinforced concrete and structuralsteel technologies meet.

Most of our products are proprietary andcan be readily specified. Locally,J&P’s experienced in-house team, ledby qualified engineers, provideengineering support to specifiers andcontractors, for whom we regularlybespoke solutions to solve uniqueapplication requirements. Downloadabledesign software is available for relevantkey products.

The companies of H-Bau, Jordahl andPfeifer have quality, reliability andintegrity at their core. As you wouldexpect of internationally renowned

brands, the products and operations aretechnically and quality endorsed byrelevant European approvals.

On a local level, J&P augments theproducts of its parent companies by itspartnership with Norwegian company,Invisible Connections, specialists in the‘unseen’ structural connection of precaststair landings and beam-to-columnconnections. Also on a local level, viathe J-UK banner, we fabricate fixingsolutions which are often derivatives ofour parent companies’ products.

This Company Overview is purely asnapshot guide. We hope somethingwithin these pages will spark a potentialsolution to an application dilemma andlook forward to the opportunity todevelop our dialogue with you.

Insulated balcony connectionsISOPRO®and ISOMAXX®

Structurally and thermally efficient, theH-Bau Isopro system is used forconcrete-to-concrete balcony andwalkway constructions. Isopro ispositioned at the slab-to-balcony/walkway interface andminimises the effects of cold-bridging,preventing cold from penetrating thebuilding envelope and preventinginternal heat from radiating out.The H-Bau Isomaxx is system, with its50% thicker insulation, is specified formore extreme climates (albeit untypicalof the UK).

Pull-out reinforcement continuity systemsFERBOX®

Awidely accepted and preferred methodof maintaining reinforcement acrossstructural joints in concrete (particularlyin-situ slab-to-wall connections), theH-Bau Ferbox system blends theadvantages of volume production in itsGerman plant, together with a dedicatedUK-local manufacturing facility for all‘specials’ up to 16mm diameter.Significantly, both plant operations areUK-CARES approved and Ferbox is thefirst UK product of its type assessed tothe requirements of EC2.

Twin-wall accessoriesKE TRANSPORT ANCHORSand MULTI-ROCKETS

Precast twin-wall construction is anincreasingly popular choice for manyprojects. For factory and site liftingpurposes, the H-Bau KE TransportAnchor system has safety and reliabilityrooted in its design and incorporates amarine-quality ply ‘spacer’ at the pointsof highest stress, minimising the risk ofbrittle fracture (a concern regardingotherwise welded systems). During twin-wall manufacture, H-Bau Multi-Rockets(of high-density plastic constructionencapsulating a rigid steel core) areused to stand off the mould and supportthe mesh of the first panel. Once thispanel is cast and flipped, the Multi-Rocket then serves as a reliable setting-out and support device for casting thesecond panel.

Waterproofing systemsPENTAFLEX®, SWELLFLEX®

andPLURAFLEX®

For the effective waterproofing ofconcrete structures (including twin-wall),H-Bau has a suite of products for all jointconditions. Most popular is Pentaflex, due to its special concrete-adheringcoating, whilst also acting as a trustedjoint-spanning barrier. Where thespecifier may be more used tohydrophilic solutions, Swellflex byH-Bau quite literally fills the gap.Similarly, where injection systems arethe preferred choice, Pluraflex byH-Bau offers the solution. Traditionalrubberised PVC waterstops complementthe range.

Disposable formwork for columnsRAPIDOBAT®

The diversity of column diameters andheights specified often pose anavailability challenge for traditionalformwork systems (with potentially highcost and long lead-times). Also, theturnaround time for site re-usedformwork can adversely impact on pourprogrammes. The H-Bau Rapidobatsystem solves these dilemmas and hasbeen chosen for decades as the high-quality and cost-efficient alternative.Available in a variety of finishes, theCretcon HD has a seamless inner-coating which cleverly expels air duringvibration, leading to a near-perfect visualconcrete surface.

Shear dowel systemsHED and JSD+

When high loads need to be safelytransferred across movement joints insuspended-slabs, H-Bau offers twosolutions. For the lighter end ofrequirements, the HED dowel is suppliedwith a rigid PCV socket (sleeve) whichallows single movement along the dowelaxis. Where loads are very high, theJSD+ is supplied with an integralreinforcement cage, which enableshighly concentrated loads to betransmitted. A variant of the JSD+ canalso accommodate two-way movement,i.e. along the dowel axis as well aslaterally, allowing the concrete elementsto move in two directions.

Cast-in channel andT-bolt fixing systems

As the inventor of cast-in channel,Jordahl has been at the forefront of thisparticular fixing technology for over 100years. Cast-in channels provide freedomof adjustment along their axis (inwhichever direction they are cast) andare reliably secured into the concrete viain-built mushroom-headed anchors (theJTA system), imposing no expansionload into the concrete (as experiencedwith many alternative drill-and-fixsolutions). Also, because no percussion-drilling machines are required, operatives are completely protected fromthe health and safety hazards ofvibration white finger, dust and noise.

There are many different Jordahlchannel profiles to select from (instainless or carbon steel), some of whichare hot-rolled (for added security andimproved dynamic-load capability) andsome of which are cold-rolled (for addedeconomy). Every channel profile has arange of matching Jordahl T-bolts whichare forged from high-quality steel in avariety of finishes (stainless, zinc-plated,spun-galvanised).

When Jordahl channels and T-bolts areused in combination, they are capable ofaccommodating a very wide range oftensile and shear loads. Virtually any

static or dynamic fixing requirement (intoconcrete) can be solved simply, safelyand efficiently with Jordahl channels.Typical applications include supportingand restraining façades of any type;whether curtain-wall, precast panel, brickwork or stone.

Where fixing adjustment is requiredvertically-only and loads are particularlyhigh, the Jordahl JXA channel system isprovided with serrations on the channellips. Combined with matching T-boltswhich are similarly serrated providesultimate non-slip protection and thehighest dynamic load-bearing capacity.

Not covered within this snap-shot guide, but also available, is a range of surface-fixed and framing channel options for ahost of differing applications, e.g. fixing‘services’ in the mechanical andengineering (M&E) sector.

JORDAHL® Expertdesign software

Worthy of particular mention is theJordahl Expert design software, whichenables correct selection of channels inthe most value-engineered way possible. It is also a prerequisite of EuropeanTechnical Assessment (‘ETA’), by whichJordahl channels are approved, thatdictates fixing selection must be byrelevant program calculation rather thansimply by tables, as in former times.

Jordahl Expert design software alsoaccommodates punching-shear analysisand shear-stud specification for JDAStudrails, also to ETA approvalrequirements.

Naturally, the J&P technical team canadvise on correct product selection, ortrain engineers in their own usage of theprograms if preferred.

Punching shear reinforcement systemJDA STUDRAILS

In flat-slab design, the high level of‘punching-shear’ present around columnsupports requires critical attention.Traditionally, potentially hundreds ofsmall ‘link’ bars would have beenspecified and installed (one at a time)around column heads, having adetrimental impact on installation costs

and programme. From this dilemmaevolved ‘studrails’ which are dramaticallyfaster to install and much easier for theengineer to inspect post-installation.Jordahl JDA Studrails comprise doublemushroom-headed reinforcement ‘studs’which are factory-welded to carrier rails.

This enables volume-placement of thestuds, which radiate outwards from thecolumn face until the load dissipates intothe slab. The studrails are typicallyinstalled from above and are placedthrough the top reinforcement ‘mat’,which supports the carrier rail.

Specialist channel fabrications and assembliesBALCON

The connection of steel balconies intoconcrete slabs (normally by differenttrades) gives rise to the need forconsiderable adjustability in the fixingmethod and the need to carry high loadswhilst also minimising the effects of cold-bridging. The J-UK Balcon, derived ofJordahl channels, neatly solves thisdesign-dilemma hat-trick. Balconarrangements offer multi-directionaladjustment, are bespoke to eachapplication and can also accommodateretro-fit balcony installations (e.g. forrefurbishment projects).

Specialist channel fabrications and assembliesBEAMCON

Where structural steel sections arerequired to connect to reinforcedconcrete, there is the ever-present riskof the two separate trades andfabricated end-plates not quite marrying-up to the concrete. Unless opting fordrill-and-fix solutions (which, as well asbeing operationally difficult, can affectthe integrity of the concrete once drilled)the secure solution is to plan installationof the J-UK Beamcon system, which hasall the inherent advantages of Jordahlchannel, from which it is derived.

Specialist channel fabrications and assembliesLADDERS and SLEDS

Precast landings are often bedded onto‘shelf’ support-angles which havehorizontally-slotted holes. Thisapplication lends itself perfectly to usageof Jordahl JXA toothed channels. In order to aid the contractor’splacement of channels at close centres,J-UK Ladders connect multiple channelsvia two lengths of factory-welded rebar(non-structural) into assemblies whichcombine handleability with fixability -particularly useful in slip-formed walls.

For the connection of curtain-wallmullions, another set of considerationsemerge. Whilst the need for inherentfixing adjustment remains, an additionalkey need is to ensure the Jordahlchannels, positioned in the top of theslab (rather than to a formwork face),cannot move and be potentially

submerged during the concrete pour.To resolve this, J-UK Sleds compriseJordahl channels connected by afactory-welded rebar cage whichsets-out the channels to the required

grid and stand-off from the soffitformwork. In such applications, thewelded cage also assists load-anchorage into the slab.

11

Popularly used in profile metal-deckingapplications, J-UK Edge Trim isingenious in its design, yet simple in siteexecution. It marries the need foraccurate setting-out of Jordahl channelsin the slab edge (e.g. to provide fixingpoints for external cladding) with theneed to provide stop-end formwork forthe concrete pour. J-UK Edge Trim isself-braced to withstand the pourpressure and is simply drill-screweddown to the metal deck on which it islocated. J-UK Edge Trim can also besuccessfully used in filigree-slabapplications.

MasonryBRICKWORK SUPPORT SYSTEM

MasonryWINDPOSTS and SLIDING BRICK ANCHORS

J-UK Windposts provide lateral restraintfor internal and external masonry‘panels’ where wind forces are present.Windposts are typically manufacturedfrom steel plate, angle section, C-sectionor rolled-hollow section. Masonry issecured to Windposts with integral tieswhich are embedded into the mortarcourse, and application-specific attentionis given to top and bottom fixingconnections.

J-UK Sliding Brick Anchors ‘SBA’s’ aredesigned to provide the necessaryrestraint for masonry panels whererestraint is required from the soffit of astructural inner-leaf, e.g. a concretebeam. The brick ties slide along a central‘stem’ which is fixed at the top end only. The arrangement provides for differentialmovement between the structural frameand brickwork cladding.

J-UK Windposts, Sliding Brick Anchorsand other remedial ties are typicallyavailable in stainless or galvanised steelfinishes.

The J-UK Brickwork Support System ispurpose-made to applicationrequirements, resulting in lean materialusage of stainless steel whilst removingthe need for additional site labour (e.g.cutting and welding). In collaborationwith the Client’s project team, J&Pdesigns application-specific solutions

in-house and prepares installation layoutdrawings.

Two systems are offered; the AngleBracket system ‘AB’ is based oncontinuous formed angle to which iswelded (at appropriate load centres)special brackets (‘back-legs’) which, aswell as being vertically adjustable, arealso configured to accommodate the

required cavity width. Alternatively, incircumstances where cavities are smalland/or required to be concealed, theAngle Only system ‘AO’ provides aleaner arrangement whereby the angle, vertically slotted for adjustment, is bolteddirectly to the concrete wall usingserrated ‘patches’ for non-slipanchorage.

Concrete liftingSWIVEL EYES

Few construction procedures can rankas high as the need for safe overheadlifting of precast concrete elements. With the Pfeifer Swivel Eye (used inconjunction with cast-in Pfeifer liftingsockets) precast elements can be safelylifted from horizontal to vertical (andvice-versa). A particular feature of theSwivel Eye is its ability to automaticallyadapt to all directions of inclined forces, including transverse shear. The systemis available in a huge load-range and iscolour-coded for ease of appropriateselection in the factory or on site.

Concrete liftingLIFTING LOOPS

Pfeifer incorporates hundreds of years ofrope technology experience into itsLifting Loops. The two ends of the high-quality galvanised steel wire areconnected via a swaged ferrule whichhas a durable ‘round’ metric thread forthreading ease and ‘perfect-match’security when inserted into similarlythreaded Pfeifer lifting sockets.Economic and flexible, Pfeifer LiftingLoops provide all-direction lifting options(including transverse when using theflared-ferrule variant) and are colour-coded for unambiguous productselection.

Concrete liftingBS SYSTEM

For ultimate lifting economy, the PfeiferBS System relies upon anchorage of therope itself into the precast element. The portion of rope left projecting thenbecomes the lifting point, which isnormally cut-off after use. Naturally, thesystem suits best those applicationswhere a permanent surface projection,or a rope cut at the concrete surface(and therefore visible on the surface),are not considered important.

Concrete connection systemsVS SYSTEM and FS BOX

The Pfeifer VS System has been usedfor decades as a convenient method of‘stitching’ precast panels together. The wire loops are initially housed insidesteel carrier units which form pockets inthe edges of precast panels. When theropes are released from their housings, they ‘spring’ into the application positionand overlap ropes of the adjoining panel. They are then effectively ‘joined’ byvertical reinforcement which is threaded

through the ‘eyes’ created. The joint isthen sealed with Pagel free-flowinggrout, specially developed for Pfeifer. The Pfeifer VS System is available tosuit a large range of loading conditions, including ‘all-directional 3-D’.

The Pfeifer FS Box is a heavy-dutyvariant of the system, designed for in-situ concrete applications and offersunique advantages over rigid starter-barproducts.

Concrete connection systemsCOLUMN SHOES and WALL SHOES

Pfeifer Column Shoes enable the load-bearing connection of precast columnsto foundation slabs as well as tocolumns themselves which are ‘stacked’.This can have a hugely beneficial impacton programme, compared to columnswhich are otherwise constructed solelyin tandem with each floor construction.Pfeifer Wall Shoes offer similar benefits, but this time for precast walls, with theadded and unique advantage they willcarry horizontal loads. Column Shoe andWall Shoe components are robustlyengineered and manufactured toexacting requirements, enabling fasterection times and high levels ofstructural security.

Concrete connection systemsPH REINFORCEMENT CONNECTORS

When installed at designed constructionjoints, Pfeifer PH ReinforcementConnectors provide secure connections. The system comprises a female socketbar which is factory-swaged to theparent reinforcement. This is internallythreaded to accept the male connectionbar, which has a hot-forged ‘upset’ endonto which a thread is rolled. As thethread diameter of each component isgreater than the parent reinforcement, the coupled arrangement maintains thecore diameter of the parentreinforcement and carries 100% of thetension or compression load expectedof it.

Concrete connection systemsRVK and TSS CONNECTORS

RVK and TSS Connectors were initiallydeveloped by J&P partner ‘InvisibleConnections’ to solve the old problem ofunsightly support, where precastlandings are connected to in-situ orprecast walls. The connectors are castintegrally and ‘unseen’ within the depthof the landing and have a ‘pull-out’

Concrete connection systemsBSF and BCC CONNECTORS

BSF and BCC Connectors employ asimilar principle to the RVK and TSSConnectors described above, but areparticularly configured to accommodatethe heavy loads typically present atprecast beam-to-column connections. The BSF system offers load capacitiesof up to 950 kN and the BCC system ashigh as 1400 kN. Specifying BSF andBCC Connectors results in the ‘clean’and ‘invisible’ connection of beams, without the unsightly hindrance andcomplex construction of traditional corbelsupports.

section which is landed into a ‘pocket’created in the wall. As such, theconnection can be accurately regardedas ‘invisible’, leaving no visual evidenceof the support when viewing the landingsoffit (as experienced with traditionalshelf-angle support methods). RVK andTSS connectors require no making

good, fire-proofing or visual treatment, whilst providing a neat and simplesolution to an old constructionconundrum. Aside of precast landingconnections, they also neatly solveconnection dilemmas for all multi-variousprecast components.
